[ENG/ESP] When fatigue blends with the beauty of the surroundings
Hello, and happy day to everyone. I sincerely hope you all have a peaceful, productive day filled with good moments. As for me, I’ve just had a pretty hectic day. We’ve been working intensely for two weeks now, with almost no breaks, and although we’re tired, we also feel the satisfaction of being very close to completing this major project at the Ecoland desalination plant. It’s been a long, demanding process full of details, but every step forward reminds us that the effort is worth it.
Luckily, the island always has that special gift of giving us a breather even in the midst of exhaustion. Its landscapes, its light, its changeable yet beautiful weather—everything seems to come together to ease tensions and give us a little push to keep going. That day we decided to take the Portachuelo route because traffic was lighter and, besides, because we wanted to arrive early to have a snack and install the remaining filter cartridges in Battery No. 3. We set out with a very clear purpose, in good spirits, and with that determination that comes when you know you’re in the home stretch.
Hola, feliz día para todos. Deseo sinceramente que puedan disfrutar una jornada tranquila, productiva y llena de buenos momentos. Yo, por mi parte, vengo de un día bastante movido. Ya llevamos dos semanas de trabajo intenso, casi sin pausas, y aunque estamos cansados, también sentimos la satisfacción de estar muy cerca de concluir esta gran tarea en la planta desalinizadora de Ecoland. Ha sido un proceso largo, exigente y lleno de detalles, pero cada avance nos recuerda que el esfuerzo vale la pena.
Por suerte, la Isla siempre tiene ese don especial de regalarnos un respiro incluso en medio del agotamiento. Sus paisajes, su luz, su clima cambiante pero hermoso, todo parece conspirar para aliviar tensiones y darnos un pequeño empujón para continuar. Ese día decidimos tomar la vía Portachuelo porque el tráfico estaba más ligero y, además, porque queríamos llegar temprano para picar y colocar las cargas del filtro que faltaba en la batería Nº 3. Íbamos con el propósito muy claro, con buen ánimo y con esa determinación que nace cuando sabes que estás en la recta final.
As soon as we arrived, we got right to work. As always, since I’m the only woman on the team, they don’t let me carry heavy loads or do any heavy lifting. My job is different: keeping an eye on the timers, checking the pressure, making sure the whole team stays hydrated, and verifying that they have lighting, tools, and everything else they need to move forward without any setbacks. It’s not physical work, but it ends up being mentally exhausting because I have to pay attention to every detail, every variation, and every number that might indicate a problem.
Apenas llegamos, pusimos manos a la obra. Como siempre, por ser la única mujer del equipo, no me permiten cargar peso ni hacer trabajos de fuerza. Mi labor es otra; vigilar los relojes, revisar las presiones, asegurarme de que todo el equipo se mantenga hidratado, verificar que tengan luz, herramientas y lo necesario para avanzar sin contratiempos. No es un trabajo físico, pero termina siendo agotador mentalmente porque debo estar atenta a cada detalle, a cada variación, a cada número que pueda indicar un problema.
Ecoland also boasts stunning vegetation and wildlife. It’s one of the attractions that draws tourists the most—and us as well, since we’re now part of the workplace landscape. We take advantage of our lunch break to take a short walk and appreciate this vibrant environment. Birds fly close by, unafraid, knowing that no one will disturb them. Feeding them is prohibited because we’ve created an ecosystem that’s as natural as possible, where they forage for their own food. We only intervene if a bird appears sick, to care for it and return it healthy to its natural habitat.
Ecoland, además, tiene una vegetación y una fauna hermosísima. Es uno de los encantos que más atrae a los turistas y también a nosotros, que ya formamos parte del paisaje laboral. Aprovechamos la hora del almuerzo para caminar un poco y apreciar ese entorno tan vivo. Las aves pasan cerca, confiadas, sabiendo que nadie las molestará. Está prohibido alimentarlas porque se ha creado un ecosistema lo más natural posible, donde ellas mismas buscan su comida. Solo se interviene si alguna se ve enferma, para cuidarla y devolverla sana a su ambiente.
In the afternoon, the weather remained beautiful, although clouds on the horizon foreshadowed rain heading toward the city. Even so, seeing the sky with those hues and contrasts was a sight to behold.
En la tarde el clima seguía radiante, aunque en el horizonte las nubes anunciaban lluvia hacia la ciudad. Aun así, ver el cielo con esas tonalidades y contrastes era un espectáculo en sí mismo.
After removing the old filter media, we began filling the filters with the new material. By then, night had fallen, and since the contract stipulates that if we work late, the hotel must provide dinner, we took the opportunity to sit down for a while and enjoy it. It was truly delicious, and after so many hours of work, it felt like a little reward.
Después de retirar la carga vieja, comenzamos a llenar los filtros con el nuevo material. Para ese momento ya había caído la noche, y como el contrato establece que si se trabaja hasta tarde el hotel debe garantizar la cena, aprovechamos para sentarnos un rato y disfrutarla. Estaba realmente deliciosa, y después de tantas horas de trabajo, se sintió como un pequeño premio.
In the end, we called it a day to rest, because the next day promised to be just as demanding. But we left with the feeling that we’d made progress, that we were doing things right, and that every effort brings us closer to our goal.
