Shopping at Rio market.

Good afternoon to everyone in the #MarketFriday community, last Thursday was payday, that only means one thing, go shopping the next day, so on Friday I decided to go to the market. Here in Venezuela it is easy to find identical products with different prices in each store, plus it is very likely that you will not find everything in one place, so you have to move around many stores. Luckily, there is a market relatively close to where I live, with affordable prices and assortment, this market is called Rio, which is a chain of markets that has spread here in Isla Margarita, so I went to market there.

To make purchases at the moment you have to be a little mathematical hahaha ...it is a little crazy how the currency works, the national currency is the Bolivar(Bs), but the prices are in dollars (USD) at the official exchange rate that the country has. When paying, if you do it in dollars somewhere they charge you a 3% tax, not to mention that both the Bolivar and the dollar are devalued, due to inflation, that has led to a rise in prices in both currencies. If we compare the prices of 3 weeks ago with those of a week ago, we can notice an abysmal difference.
This market is located on a main avenue (31 de Julio Avenue) near La Asuncion which is the capital of the state of Nueva Esparta on Margarita Island.
Rio is a wide market with many options to buy, and if you go early in the morning you can find many options in the fresh food section such as apples and tomatoes, the atmosphere is usually cold, although in that section the cold that keeps some essential products fresh makes that area very pleasant, especially in these hot moments.

This market has a bakery/sweets section.

Another good thing about Rio is the variety of products, you can go to almost any section and you will find several options of the same product, both domestically produced and imported. Each product comes with its own quality and price so sometimes it can be difficult to choose.
Also, the quantity of these products is usually high so you won't have to worry about someone going with the product you want in their cart because you will easily find the product on their shelf.

Some of my goals here was rice and among several options such as Corina at 1.17 $ or Santoni at 1.31 $ there is a rice that gives me confidence and it is the Mary Superior type 1 (red) that was at 1.10 $, and not only I recommend it only for the price, but also it cooks very well for having a quality grain.

Another of my targets was condensed milk, there was not much to choose from, as you can see, there was only one type, but in huge quantities so choosing was easy,

The meat section is another point that usually gives confidence because you can see the butchers making the cuts to the chosen meat, and the quality, in this area sometimes you have to wait a little, but as I came early, I did not have to deal with that. It also has a frozen area for those who come looking for a quick option and don't want to or can't afford to wait a little longer.

With the soaps it happens a crazy thing with their price, the every night 3 weeks ago was at $0.80 and the dollar was at 6.5 BS and now look at it, at $0.99 and 7.85 BS the same soap. It also happens that we are in holiday season so prices tend to skyrocket at those times, because of supply and demand.

With the wipes I found a HUGE difference in prices and I saw as quite profitable the facial tissue at 0.40 $, rarely you find opportunities like this

In the end I finished my shopping with the products I needed and was shocked by the change in prices over the course of 2 weeks.

Well, dear friends, I hope this tour of the Rio supermarket has been of interest to you.
Bye

The photos were taken with a SAMSUNG F2.5 camera and a ZTE Blade A3 Lite phone

Jumping from store to store to buy what you need is surely tiresome. Good to know you bought what you need.

That was very well stocked! I have seen a lot of markets in Venezuela and this is one of the best I have seen. The Bolivar/Dollar mess is ridiculous. It makes it so hard flipping it back and forth.

Your fruits look amazing and the meat looks great!

I am so glad you don't have too many problems with the stores on Margarite Island! Thank you for supporting the challenge! Please put the link to your post on the MarketFriday comment section here Thank you!

I want to thank you for being a part of the #MarketFriday Challenge. I have personally found there is always so much to learn about people, where they live, and how things are done in different parts of the world. For me, reaching out across the globe and learning about different cultures through their markets, especially local markets and farmers' markets, has been such a rewarding experience. We have become a melting pot of culture, but, it is still the rituals, festivals, food, architecture, and even your language/languages that separate us... and what is normal for us? There are unwritten rules that rule our social behaviors. I see this as allowing for increased tolerance between cultures and nations, and opportunities to come together on an even playing ground. I have learned so much about all of you and it has been an amazing experience. We do differ in many ways, which makes us interesting and unique, but, there are many ways in which are so much alike.

Fridays are all about the #MarketFriday Challenge! Looking to take part in it? Here is how:
