Attending Christmas Market In Düsseldorf - Germany 🎄 #MARKETFRIDAY

avatar

It does dawn on me that the Christmas Holidays are already behind us, but in essence we should carry the Christmas spirit and its message with us all through the year, which is why I'm taking a leap of faith and sharing my first Christmas market experience with you.

Before I left the tropical hemisphere for a colder climate, someone had already recommended experiencing a Christmas market at least once in Germany and without having it on our priority list, we were spontaneously invited by a dear friend of ours to join them to the Christmas market in Oberhausen.

We immediately accepted the invite and packed some beverages and snacks for the road trip ahead and an extra jacket, because it was going to be below zero degrees Celsius. The journey was mostly without bumps, until we reached Oberhausen and landed ourselves in traffic towards the market.

The group decided to drive a few kilometers further and attend the Christmas markets in Düsseldorf, which happened to be a better choice because of more options and the crowd being scattered between the different markets.

The first things we bought were the famous bratwurst and a bag of roasted chestnut. The chestnuts were pleasantly hot, warming our ice cold fingers. It being my first time trying chestnuts, the taste and texture were familiar and reminded me of cooked breadfruit.

We then proceeded to stroll around and take the festivities, lights, music and ambiance in. After having seen everything there was to see at the first market, we walked a few meters further and went to see what the other market had to offer. There we tried a glass of Glühwein, which had a bit too much cinnamon for my taste. With a little bit less of that spice, I could've enjoyed the drink more.

After having enjoyed the warm drink, the music and people around us, we wandered further and realized how hungry we were. How happy we were when we encountered another vendor selling bratwurst and sandwiches.

We didn't know what part of meat the sandwich on the left was filled with, but it tasted amazing and worth the try. If ever going to Germany again, I'll definitely be looking out for that.

We then proceeded to look around for extra socks at the advice of mine - who whore two pairs of socks - because some of us didn't wear the right type of shoes. We even went into the mall a few steps away from us, to get warmed up. That's where we encountered the huge "Christmas tree" chandelier.

After being warmed up and having caught up about the latest news, we decided to head home. It was a day or rather night out well spend. Worth going to another Christmas market in another city coming years. Ever been to a Christmas market? Let me know in the comments below 🤓.

It was a nice experience and definitely worth going to a Christmas market at least once.

Are you currently traveling through Europe?

Not through whole Europe at the moment, but definitely want to visit more countries in the region 😊.

My pleasure and also enjoyed reading about your experience in your part of the world 😊. Definitely learned some new things.

Never knew there was a place called New Holland in Russia for example, if my research was done right.

I’m glad you both had a lot of fun! Happy new year 🥳. I remember the new year in Suriname, the people love play 🧨 and look like they happy so much but our family can’t sleep well two weeks hahaha 😝.

Happy New Year to you and your family! 🎆🎊🎊🎊

!LOL Yeah, December in Suriname is on a whole other level. It was a little more sober the last couple of years, but they picked it up again this year.

😃This is so lovely. I’ve always heard about Christmas markets but have never been to one. Happy to see your experience here. It looks quite festive and had been fun to go in a group. You know I chuckled at the socks part. Lol!
😃Thanks for sharing.

You know I chuckled at the socks part. Lol!

You know, they kept asking me if my feet/toes were warm enough and that's when I told them that I had two pairs on. In Suriname I suffered from cold hands and feet, even when the rest of my body was hot, so I had to do implement some extra measures to help against the colder climate.

I’ve always heard about Christmas markets but have never been to one.

They tried two have Christmas fairs in Suriname and I think it was organized two times, but never been myself.

My hands get cold easily and more recently, my feet. I keep them wrapped up. Lol

Re Christmas market, I heard about one that was being held in our city but a bit close to the mountains. To me that meant “cold” so I passed. 🤣😂

Same here. I think the body parts that are "away" from the stomach or heart catch the most cold, like feet, ears, hands and nose.

Yes!! I have been to many Christmas Markets, even a couple in Germany. What an experience!

Just like you, I froze!! It was so cold and it was the end of November (or perhaps the beginning of December) I drank the mulled wine and the cinnamon wasn't that strong, so it must have had a heavy hand in yours. I have to admit, I could taste the spices, but, they were different and quite yummy. :)

I was fascinated by the one in Nuremberg and could not stop going around and around. I saw a Weihnachtspyramide, or Christmas Pyramid. These wooden pyramids are a traditional German decoration dating back to the 16th century. I had to have one!!! I still have it and use it every year at Christmas.

The ongoing theme at the German Christmas markets was crowds and cold! But, I have to admit, they were the best markets I have been to in the whole world! :)I am so glad you went! You will remember it forever! :) I am so glad you took the time to post in the challenge! Your post was fun!

I try to let people know how much I appreciate their participation in #MarketFriday! Even though I get many on a weekly basis, each one is read and enjoyed. By now, you must know how much I enjoy learning about the world and how it is to live in your corner of it, and, make yours or mine better in any way. I have been given hints to make life nicer, and recipes to make dinner interesting. I find it interesting to compare, not by the world's standards, but, by how we find the quality of our life with different I enjoy learning more about you and hope you feel the same, that is why I find it important to take the time to read a couple of #MarketFriday posts and leave a genuine comment. It is important for a community to do this, learning about others, and getting to know each other. The fun is in getting to know people and making a positive contribution to community life. All this fun and money too. What is not to love? That is one of the reasons I joined Hive. How about you? :) I leave you with the guidelines. I hope you are having an amazing week!

Fridays are all about the #MarketFriday Challenge! Looking to take part in it? Here is how:

Rules of the Road to Join #MarketFriday!

  1. Go to the market, or anywhere that you pay money for a service. It can be a movie, an auction, or even a museum. Wherever money is exchanged for a service or product.
    Take pictures! Be creative!
  2. Tell us a little bit about the market or the event. What brought you there? What did you buy? How much did it cost? Was it expensive? Did it go up or down? A scroll of pictures with few words doesn't usually work.
  3. Post the pictures. Of course, you should tell a little bit about the ones you post, it is too difficult to guess about some.
  4. Use the MarketFriday Community Platform to post (#hive-196308) This is not required but appreciated.
PLEASE Drop the link into the MarketFriday comment section so I can find it!!
  5. Following me and reblogging the post would be appreciated, but not a rule, more vision for more views on the #MarketFriday posts!
    7. You must put #MarketFriday by @dswigle somewhere on your post.

As always, please remember! #MarketFriday loves you!

This was my pyramid this year!

Oh is that it what you've described. I'll be sure to look for it in the coming Christmas markets in Germany and I also joined Hive to meet new people and learn from each others' cultures.

I'll make sure to do my part as well 😊.
