Cryptocurrency Used To Raise Money For Research

For a long time, I felt that cryptocurrency needed to transition from simply a mechanism to speculate upon to one that actually invested in projects that seek to solve real world problems.

In this article we will cover how we might be seeing this evolution start. Please keep in mind this is not an endorsement for the blockchain project nor what the money was raised for.

Pulsechain is a fork of the Ethereum blockchain. It was put together by Richard Heart, a figure who elicits some controversy within the cryptocurrency arena. Whatever the views on him, there was an event that is foretelling of where we could see cryptocurrency going.

Fundraising For Research

The SENS Foundation is a research institute dedicated to finding ways to slow down the damage done to the body through aging as well as repairing that damage. Some term this longevity research.

It is set up a non-profit for tax purposes, hence this could be looked at as charity. Using cryptocurrency for charity drives was undertaken. This is a bit different in that Sens is a research foundation that publishes results of its work. Other institutions can pick up on it and use it to further the cause.

Using Pulsechain and the token associated with that, more than $25 million was raised in just a few days. This is a significant total considering that the yearly budget for the foundation is roughly $5 million.

Since the network is going through its airdrop, basically it was designed that donors to SENS would receive tokens in return for their donations. The project was set up so that the amount of tokens received would decline over the course of the raise. This was to motivate the donors to give larger, earlier.

The key is the impact.

Here is what the Aubrey de Grey, founder of SENS Research had to say:

"This is something that is completely transformative.

"It is going to allow us to move considerably faster to getting towards a post-ageing world, it is just amazing!"

Aubrey de Grey added: "We have been having a very good year with income, a big expansion of our activities is coming.

"Thanks to the PulseChain Airdrop, those plans are going to explode into another level entirely."

Trillions of Dollars Needed

We are a technologically advancing planet. This is something that few can deny. The breakthroughs we are seeing are incredible.

The challenge is that what goes into arriving at the breakthrough is an expensive proposition. When we factor in all the technological, as well as medical, material, and even space, research, we can see how it runs into trillions of dollars.

Presently, we see this realm monopolized by Venture Capital firms and tax supported grants given to Universities and other non-profit entities. The first pulls the financial benefits to a small group of entities while the later uses tax dollars, or more accurately debt, for funding.

Neither of these are attractive propositions for the populations of the world. However, the research needs to be done and someone has to pick up the tab. Since it is getting to be such a large tab. we are seeing only the biggest able to fund these things.

It is no wonder that mega-technology companies keep getting more powerful. In many ways, they are the only ones (or one of the few) who can afford the large price tag. Smaller companies and start ups have no chance.

This is where we can see cryptocurrency making a major difference. We have the ability to "create money out of thin air". Since we see the same in the present system, the key is we can distribute the benefits much differently. Instead of VC firms taking the financial gains, through tokenization, funding can be set up in a way that provides "ownership" to the masses. Under this scenario, anyone can join in.

Imagine the possibilities that can come from this. The market can dictate where money goes for research and societal expansion. Anyone who is involved in any research endeavor can tokenize the project and get funded. This puts the ownership of the tokens in the hands of many different people, most of whom are exempt from the present system.

Obviously, like was set up here, a lot of research is a money loser, hence more of a donation. There is not really a commercial use or payback for fundamental research. This is often what Universities do.

Nevertheless, we know VCs make bank from their investments in all kinds of startups. Here is where cryptocurrency truly has the opportunity to change things.

Changing How Things Are Done

This is the grand opportunity before us. In creating a new system, we are not seeking to merge with the existing one. This is what we see being pushed now. Instead, the idea is to replace what is there. Anything that is to survive is going to have to be consumed by what we are creating, not the other way around.

The Internet was not designed to merge with the information purveyors of the day. Rather, it created an entirely new platform which to share information. Some of the existing entities, newspapers and magazines, were able to adopt an online presence. Most, however, went out of business.

As we can see, it was up to the those that were intent on surviving to adopt what was created.

The Tokenization of Everything is a concept that few are just starting to really understand. It provides the potential for cryptocurrency to penetrate every aspect of society. We are just beginning to uncover the power that is in our possession.

SENS Research is headed by one of the most recognized individuals in the longevity community. de Grey is a well known figure in the field and one of the leading researchers.

Certainly, the case could be made that this is not the largest of arenas. Compared to cancer research, as an example, this is small both in terms of dollars and personnel.

Nevertheless, this project that funded SENS is going to get noticed in that industry. Anyone involved will now be exposed to the concept of cryptocurrency and have a real life case for it. As opposed to viewing it as a speculative vehicle, they will see it as a funding mechanism.

This moves cryptocurrency into an entirely new sphere. Here we can see how it can have enormous real world impact and actually be a vehicle for advancing society forward.

Hopefully we will see more innovation in the area of research and development. Society needs a lot of solutions and cryptocurrency can be a major part of the process.

Maybe a day will come when we will see funding proposals on Hive (on the base layer or on a second layer) for science research projects, for technology development projects, and many similar. Blockchain seems like a much better way for a group of people (unified by a common interest, say a group of scientists) to collectively hold funds in a treasury and vote on where the funds will be spent. I look forward to seeing that day come soon.

Interesting concept. I am not sure it would be done on the base layer although I guess it could be. The community could decide on what proposals to fund. For now it is suppose to be for funding of development yet I guess it could be expanded into the area you mentioned.

We would need to see much higher Hive prices first.

That would be something amazing to see!

I believe it might take a while, but that's where we're headed

A lot of money is being created through crypto currency and not only that, helping to solve real life problems make things more interesting to watch. The big players won't have much choice than to she exposed to this new world advancement and the future of tokenization.

Many other project will keep getting their funds through crptocurrency and in no time, just like the magazine is now sidelined, anyone or anything than can't get along with the crypto train would have to be in the trash can where it belong.!PIZZA

Beautiful, it totally changes everything, throwing monopoly into the gutter. Since money can both be created out of thin air in fiat cases and crypto, it's not sensible that only big corps are having the opportunity to maximize and further create wealth for themselves alone. It redefines the concept totally.

I had not heard of that one although in a brief glimpse it looks like they are conducting an ICO. That could run afoul of regulators in some countries.

Nevertheless, it is great to see cryptocurrency entering the realm in this manner.

A lot of research projects have difficulty getting off the ground or were abandoned because of lack of funding. Raising money through cryptocurrency would surely solve this problem.

I really wish I could see how you manage to research info for all of the posts you make. Truly admire the work.

This article is exactly why I decided to join Hive. You are so correct when you point out the potential for cryptocurrency to completely change the global economic dynamic. I particularly love how this article showcases the potential to shift the financial benefit of research from the 'empowered' few to a decentralized communal prosperity most especially in an economic sense.

In his comment @borislavzlatanov expresses a hope that one day we will see funding proposals here on Hive. My principle reason for joining the Hive ecosystem is to make that happen. In my introductory post back in Jan. of this year I introduced an idea to create a community here specifically for that purpose. The concept is for the community to be a 'think tank' that generates sound ideas which can be turned into working projects which effect positive change in our living communities. The ability to generate funding is already built into the core concept of enterprises such as Hive and now there is also CityCoin.

As you point out so often and so well, the mechanisms to make this happen are already here or coming very soon. And more importantly, we posses the power to make it happen. This is the true beauty of tokenized social networking (at least to my minds eye).

Thanks for another insightful and invaluable article.
Blessed be.

I think as we see more infrastructure built, the innovation in terms of funding will start to flow. We are still putting some of the basics in place.

You are right, there is a lot of potential even on Hive to do some tremendous things.

That is really cool. I like how it is putting these opportunities into the hands of regular people. Like you said, we see too much only the VC's and rich people getting in on stuff like this (non-profit not withstanding).

For research such as this, it makes sense to receive funding from cryptocurrency. The part about generating money out of thin air would help the scientists involved have enough backing as this research would include a lot of trial and error. The volatile nature of cryptocurrencies would be a blessing if utilized properly.

The volatile nature of cryptocurrencies would be a blessing if utilized properly.

It could be although I have a feeling that the money would quickly be converted to fiat. I doubt a research institute wants to risk market volatility.

I think this is a great step for crypto and it could really help to fund important projects without forcing them to follow the secret agendas of big corporation or politicians

Venture Capital firms really take a ton of the profits out of these ventures.

We need to stop this by getting in the game ourselves.

I like this as who doesn't like medical research that is funded by crypto and is openly available to everyone to use their findings. This is going to help so much and not something you can FUD.

This really is a huge leap forward for funding research. The way Richard Heart set it up is actually pretty ingenious as far as both the research goes and the Pulsechain distribution. This money was "sacrificed" to the foundation and/or also to the Pulsechain address meaning that whatever was sent is completely gone. You could receive a tax deduction, however, if you sacrificed to the foundation.

The idea is that people will receive "free" Pulse tokens with a zero value as recognition of their sacrifice. These Pulse tokens will then be the "gas" on the new Pulsechain when it launches exactly like Ethereum is the gas for transactions on it's chain. The difference is, there will literally be trillions of PLS tokens so fees will be fractions of a penny vs the enormous fees to transact on the Ethereum network.

However it works out, Heart wanted to set a precedent with other major crypto players that they should be using their influence for the good of the world, not just themselves. He's hoping this will spur other people to donate as well.

In the meantime, like him or hate him, you can't argue with the results Richard Heart has been delivering. I've been in HEX for a while now and I participated in the sacrifice phase for the Pulsechain as well. So far, it's been one of the best moves I've ever made in crypto. If this works out like it looks like it might, there will be a lot of money continuing to pour into health and research outfits in the future.

I'll always support initiatives that allows scientific research without the influence of States or big, established corporations. We need some, but we also need financial independance sometimes. So, seeing that this particular initiative was very successful is quite interesting, and a good omen for the next to come!

Yet, your article leaves me with the impression that you are expecting the industry to make more and more use of the blockchain. I totally agree with the need of a vision change (away from a purely speculative purpose of the cryptoassets), and that it will have a lot of benefits for everyone involved.

But, don't you fear that the regular private sector (companies), will somehow corrupt the initial intent of independance from banks and states that was conveyed with the birth of cryptocurrencies ? I read a lot of people wanting the cryptocurrencies to become "mainstream" currencies, but is it really a good thing ? A bit like the internet that was intended to share knowledge, and is now a kind of big mall full of advertisement ?

(It's a real interrogation, without judgment. I'm a baby in the crypto world, and clearly don't get the whole picture here)

And thank you for this very interesting in depth article!
I wonder how you manage to research, and write so much articles on a daily basis, considering the quality of the content :)
