Cuba: Hive Can Change People's Lives

Things are starting to gear up for Hive.

Over the last few months, a great deal of focus was placed upon countries like Venezuela and Cuba. These countries are showing us where the potential of Hive, at least in the near term, resides.

If we are talking about making an impact, Hive is now at a place where it can do that rather easy. We have enough infrastructure in place to making the lives of hundreds of thousands of people better.

Even if we concentrate upon 1,000, we can see how this will make a significant difference.

The key here is we are discussing basic necessities. For the sake of this article, electricity will be the utility we emphasize.

Impacting Cubans

The Tweet above got a great deal of attention from the Hive community and deservedly so. It is a big step forward when the bridge between Hive and basic necessities is erected. Hopefully this is a process which gets duplicated around the world. For now, however, we will just deal with Cuba.

On the most recent episode of CTT, @hivecuba was on detailing the situation for Hive in that country. There is a small, but dedicated, group forming in that area. As we will see, the success rate for Hive to be of major impact isn't that far out.

The barrier to entry in terms of an impact in a country like Cuba is low. We are dealing with an area that doesn't have an advanced economy. The ingenuity of the people can only go so far. There are physical, along with political, limits.

Of course, cryptocurrency is global and is not really affected by that, at least not to the same degree. The tentacles can extend anywhere in the world, often uninvited.

Therefore, Cuba is a terrific area to focus some attention.

$10 Per Month

It is wonderful that Cubans can now pay their electric bill using the Hive Backed Dollar (HBD). However, many have questioned what that will cost? This is something that makes sense. To figure out what kind of impact we can make, it is best to understand what the levels we are dealing with are.

According to Hivecuba, electric bills in that country range from $10-$20 per month. That is a rather low figure, especially for many of us in developed countries. Look at what is happening to the cost of energy in Europe and you can see how the bills are going through the roof.

One of the keys in this discussion is income. If the Cubans were making $50K per year, $10 a month would be nothing. Sadly, that is not the case.

Harkening back to the interview, it was stated the average monthly wage in the country is around $40 per month (some list it at around $50).

Either way, we can see the numbers were are dealing with are rather low.

Essentially, $10 a month is going to make a huge impact in a country like this.

Hive Paying The Electric Bill For 1,000 Cubans

Now it is time for some simple math.

To generate $10 per month, we are dealing with, at the present price of $HIVE, 25 per month. For 1,000 people, that is naturally 25K $HIVE at the current exchange rate.

If we divide that by 30 days, we get 833 $HIVE per day would roughly pay the electric bill (or a fair portion of it) for 1,000 Cubans.

Think about that for a second. The average salary is roughly $40 per month and we can give 1,000 people a 25% increase with 833 $HIVE daily. Of course, the numbers change if the price moves up to 60 cents (555 at that point).

Much in the same way with the Hive Borehole Project, we are dealing with basic necessities. In Ghana, Hive is delivering, locally, water, to communities that presently are without. With Cuba, we have the ability to keep the lights turned on.

The takeaway from this is we can make a huge impact if we understand how low the bar is in some areas.

Hive Explosion

Here is an epicenter that can be tapped into which can really make a difference. It is also where we can find the next generation of people on Hive.

Cryptocurrency is littered with stories of scams and deception. Fortunately, for Hive, we just keep plugging along. Future activity is going to come from pockets where the impact is immediate. For most, especially with social media, there is no incentive to change. Why move from Twitter when it works rather well?

Markets such as Venezuela and Cuba can be hot spots for Hive. The ole saying is "find a need and fill it". There is no doubt the economies in these countries is not working, even less so then the rest of the world (which is abysmal). Nevertheless, we can see from the numbers what kind of impact can be made simply with some focused activity.

Of course, it is up to the individuals from those countries to get an account and start getting active. Those who are leading the charge in those areas deserve credit (and support).

As we can see, Hive is making a difference in people's lives.

That could be a great idea, light for 1000 Cubans from Hive. It might come the day when Cubans will be using HBD for almost everything, we only need to make everyone here notice the benefits of using it and we are working on it, slowly but stepping hard. Thank you for your constant support and we hope to see in Cuba one day, it might happens hahaha.

Hive is probably one of the few blockchains out there with a use case. It has provided an alternative for the regular 9-5 for quite a few of us... I know some call us leeches for dumping HIVE on a constant basis in order to make a living from creating content on the chain, but I see it from a different perspective...

It is foolishness to not want people earning a living off Hive.

What better way to guarantee return activity and users.

People used to talk about making a living when I first got here. Somewhere along the way it became suspect or wrong. I'm actually thrilled to read your posts. I remember being really excited seeing photos where people had bought their kids presents for Christmas and birthdays with the money they made here. I'm almost 65 yrs old and hive is helping me keep a roof over my head and food on the table. When people talk that down and make it wrong it's just silly. Do they want their Granny eating cat food or what? Sorry, I got a little intense there. Thank you acesontop and taskmaster for giving me a bit of lightness and perspective. 😀

Cryptocurrency is littered with stories of scams and deception. Fortunately, for Hive, we just keep plugging along.

Hive is a gift to humanity everyone especially the countries you mentioned should be tapping into and taking advantage of the opportunities it offers, paying electricity bills with $10 HBD monthly when the monthly minimum wage of Cuba is between $40-$50 is uncommon out there.

Hive is impacting lives positively.

That's so crazy. There is so much untapped potential here. It's going to be so huge as people start to figure all of this out. How awesome they are providing this service. It can be totally life changing for people.

The potential is enormous.

$HBD is one of, if not the greatest, feature Hive has to offer. It appeals to many because of what it can provide.

In our country Cuba, the impact on daily life of being able to obtain income such as that created by Hive is very important.
I give a clear example: my mother is a retired widow after 40 years of work, her retirement pension amounts to 1528 Cuban pesos, which with the exchange rate of the dollar in the official market is about 13 usd, approximately 30 hive per month. In my job, as a freelancer I earn a little more, and together with the earnings that Hive generates I can support her economically, because even the most basic services, water, gas, electricity, cleaning and food, can easily quintuple the amount of money she earns.
Maybe in other countries, Hive's income is not so noticeable, but I assure you that in Cuba it is.
Growing Hive in our country is a great opportunity and a challenge. Unfortunately, we have to battle against the perception that many Cubans have that everything related to cryptocurrencies is a scam.
However, we are there, in every event, in every opportunity we have to show them that there is another world out there and at the same time we also battle with the fact of making them see Hive not only as a way of income, but also as a space for sharing.
Thank you for this post, as I am excited to see our community growing every day

That perception is everywhere because much of what is in crypto is a scam.

However, you just need to be a living example of what Hive can do.

Fantastic! As you mentioned, some countries are in dire straits economically and every dollar counts, so hive is of much more value to them than for those of us who live in Europe and North America. Hopefully, the bar will be raised along with the value of Hive as a currency. Which brings me to my next point. As it grows, Hive will inevitably attract bad actors (including governments), or problems of scalability will pop up, so I wonder, what are the vulnerable points for the system, and how can they be mitigated? It's an uncomfortable topic, but as some say, it's not the truck that you see coming that is the problem, it's the one you don't see coming :)

In the early days of Bitcoin, one of the first bull runs was when Silkroad decided to offer it as a payment currency. All of a sudden a big demand came and the price went up. Examples such as Cuba and Venezuela could be the spark to create demand for Hive and HBD and make the price of Hive go up.

Wow, this article really caught my attention, you are absolutely right, we are not far away from HIVE being really big, it is a great blockchain and helps many people in need, what we have to keep in mind is not to abuse this.

It is all part of grassroot movements. This is key. Hive does not talk about visiting nations and starting initiatives. Instead, it simply has people on the ground who get involved and individuals from other areas who look to help them.

Thank you very much for this article, for the support you give us, and for being aware of our situation.

I am from Venezuela, and hive is a blessing that came into my life when I needed it most, we have lived terrible times, and we are still living them today in the economic, political, health, social and all kinds. I do not give 100% because of the situation of services we live in (electricity and internet), the moods, and the equipment I have that are very old, but even so, I make the effort and I can not complain because what I get helps me a lot.

I will continue to do my best to create the best content for everyone, promote my beautiful platform and my colleagues.

Again, Thank you @taskmaster4450 💕

It's nice to see and I agree that the comparison of prices is relative to how much we make. $10 isn't much for someone in the US but it's probably a decent chunk in Cuba. I just think that having these offramps is a very good thing.

Thank you for sharing such positive news on the real world impact of Hive to help communities. It is so refreshing from all the crypto youtubers most of whom are driven by pure greed. I sometimes get rather disheartened by all the focus on speculation and making a quick buck in crypto. Posts like this reinspire me and reinforce my belief that crypto can be a force for good in this topsy turvy world.

In theory I love hearing this and its precisely the kind of thing I've wanted to come out of Hive for years with my own genius ideas im basically unable to implement.

That being said, I am a little concerned about tying things like bills and basic survival to content creation, blogs, which may depend on the fluctuations of Hive, which could on a normal week range from 10 cents to several dollars, perhaps in some cases even jumping between those two extremes in an active market.

This could make or break people in ways beyond their control should they become dependent on something otherwise seen as life saving. Without a guarantee, it's quite scary.

Now, if there could be a system put in place to give a month advanced in particular times of need or something (NOT like a credit card but I dunno I'm not an economist), some kindof fallback, then I'd be 100% on board. Right now maybe I'm at 80%

According to Hivecuba, electric bills in that country range from $10-$20 per month.

So basically an active member could easily pay their bill with a couple of posts :) ...

May I also suggest that the Philippines is a great place to make an impact? It's crypto friendly from what I've heard, and a little money goes a long way there. Not to mention that the residents of the rural areas are usually extremely poor.

It's true, HIVE is making a difference in the lives of thousands of people in developing countries, especially those who, because they have governments and politicians with retrograde ideologies and approach, have many more problems than normal. Such is the case of Venezuela and Cuba, because any country where the level of income is too low and is not correspondent with the respective cost of living, it will be helped more easily by HIVE.

The focus should be on high-need countries where people are making a real and sincere effort to constantly integrate and work on our HIVE platform (Venezuela and Cuba are perfect examples in such a sense). Hive is making a difference in that regard, and will continue to make a difference in the future, that's for sure.
