How Early Are We In The Crypto Game?

avatar

Many are worried that it is too late to get into Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies. At the same time, some ponder if the governments will simply shut the entire thing down.

To get the answer it is best to frame where we are in the process.

Willy Woo is a well known Bitcoin trader and advocate. Recently, he drew the parallel between Bitcoin and the Internet. His claim is that Bitcoin is roughly to the point of the Internet circa 1997. He also states that the growth rate is much quicker, meaning that we could see about 8 years of Internet advancement in the next 4.

In terms of adoption, Bitcoin has roughly the same users as the Internet had in 1997. But Bitcoin's growing faster. Next 4 years on current path will bring Bitcoin users to 1b people, that's the equivalent of 2005 for the Internet.

Source

This is a fair assessment. The parallels between the Internet and cryptocurrency make a ton of sense. It is also one of the reasons why people can take solace in understanding that we are still very early in this process.

So what do the numbers look like?

According to Internetworldstates, IDC had the user base of the Internet pegged in 1997 as such:

internetstats.png

The revealing part of this is the fact that it was only about 1.7% of the entire global population.

Woo's estimate on the growth rate would also be impressive.

internetstats.png
Source

By the end of 2005, the Internet users totally more than 1 billion people. Woo is suggesting that Bitcoin will go from roughly 70 million users to more than 1 billion in the next 4 years.

We must keep in mind that Woo is what is termed a "Bitcoin Maximalist". He believes that is the only cryptocurrency that will be used. Personally, this does not make a lot of sense to me but it is not uncommon for people with financial backgrounds to believe we will replicate the present system, but based upon Bitcoin.

Nevertheless, the thought process in terms of growth rate is most likely sound. The numbers could be a bit bigger if we use all of crypto as opposed to just Bitcoin. Certainly Ethereum having so many wallets will be adding a few more to the totals.

That said, it is likely that most who are involved in Bitcoin, or crypto in general, have at least some Bitcoin in a wallet. It is the first crypto-asset that many invest in when they find this arena.

Source

The challenge with this is the fact that cryptocurrency still has not found the "Killer DApp". While many consider Bitcoin, itself, to be that, it does not seem likely. Obviously, that set things in motion with the introduction of the white paper by Satoshi. However, the masses are not flocking to Bitcoin. In fact, with the recent reports of Whale wallets exceeding the 10-1,000 BTC holders, one could make the case that Bitcoin is the exact opposite.

Thus, we are still looking for the application that pulls large numbers of people to cryptocurrency. Over the past couple weeks, I made the case that Leofinance's new microblogging application will have the potential to grab a large share of users. Since it has an almost non-existent learning curve to get started, it could be the ideal application to introduce people to "Web 3.0".

Twitter's growth rate shows us how powerful the process can be.

image.png
Source

This chart shows how it went from 30 million users in 2010 to 240 million in only 4 years. The difference is that when Twitter was starting out, people did not know what Twitter was.

Today, that is not the case. There are over 330 million users of that platform, many whom are starting to question whether centralized social media is beneficial or not. The actions by the Big Tech companies is starting to spread some fear among users around the world.

Source

One of the evolutions that is taking place, largely unnoticed, is the merging of social media and finance. Obviously, the WallStreetBets episode shows how powerful social media is in bringing people together. It can put the power of decentralization to work by uniting people around a common cause. In this instance, Wall Street hedge funds were the target.

However, this is a move that is much bigger than that. We are seeing the ability to conduct financial activities starting to be built into social media platforms. The most obvious is Web 3.0 applications since they are tied to cryptocurrency. These digital assets provide the foundation for what can become an entirely new financial system.

Just like the smart phone brought together mobile, computing, and the Internet, the merging of finance and social media can be equally as powerful. The world of social media is gaining in importance. As more people join the Internet, the numbers will keep growing.

Cryptocurrency allows for social networks to operate as economies. In short, they become their own markets. While present social media has economic activity, it is a byproduct of the platform. Web 3.0 is constructed in such a manner that it is native.

Source

Thus, we need to realize that this is still very early days in the process. The above chart is the typical technology life cycle. We are still pre "The Chasm". Crossing that is when we start to move away from the early adopters and head towards the majority.

We are, however, far enough along, that it is going to be tough for anyone to stop this shift. Ultimately, the pace of government is going to hinder the attempts. Even if they get their act together in 1 year, a feat highly unlikely, that means, according to Woo's calculations, there will be more than 200 million users.

In short, the longer it takes them to on top of things, the bigger this mountain becomes.

The pace of adoption is not without precedence. In the U.S., smartphone adoption went from 0 to more than 70% in under 8 years. Cryptocurrency is obviously starting at a point higher than 0, thus we have a better baseline to draw from.

We will see massive growth over the next few years. At that point, by about mid-decade, then we will see the push to mass adoption.

One billion crypto users by 2025 is logical. Best guess, that is likely a 10x from here.

Yeah I was going to say that we are still innovators, everyone of us already here on Leofinance, we are devs, marketers, testers, analysts, we are all still building this platform one way or the other

There are obviously a couple of the early phases going on. Certainly the innovation stage is in full gear. However, we are passed, in my view, the total geek stage.

Now we are entering the era where the early adopters grow in number. Hopefully the new LEO app will help that enormously.

bro get real, all we need is @dan to dump his b1 stake and buy $100M to $1 B worth of HIVE or back HIVE with his massive BTC holdings

oh shit he erased his wikipedia page good thing i SCREENSHOT it where it says he has $600 MILLION two UYEARS AGO HAHAHA

I hear b1 has 300,000 BTC? thats $10 Billion/ Dan has 25% to 1/3rd if not more

Dan can pump HIVE to $2 billion marketcap easily hahahaha

hive will be at least $3 again, maybe $10 id say hive is worth $100 after ethereum metamask adds hive engine with @hellotelos virtual machine

Hive needs to MERGE into Telos before telos goes up

hive already has @appics

There's too much fiat to be absorbed by crypto. We are not the same as we were 4 years ago. We still are in a building process and positioning. The great thing is that growing seems imminent due the numbers go on one way which is up.

The other side to that equation is there is now a lot of crypto out there, with more being distributed each day. People have a lot of value in their bags now, something that will likely keep growing over the next few years.

There will be a point where most people's crypto exceeds their fiat.

I know I am one who looks at where some are today and feel I'm late to the game. But I do recognize that I only have a few friends who even talk about crypto let alone own any. I think the next 3 years will be very interesting for the growth of the blockchain environment. Buying LEO and HIVE at 0.45 and 0.14 is like getting Google @ 1999 prices. Only going to go up!

Another way of looking at it @captaincryptic is to think of how many people actually use crypto applications. Forget owning any, how many are using crypto apps on a daily basis?

That number is miniscule compared to even those holding it in their wallets.

One billion crypto users by 2025 is logical.

An exciting image of 2025!
That is if we consider a continuous growth of adopters until then, but unforeseen events can occur that slow down the process, don't you think?

There was nothing that slowed the pace of the internet. When you look at technological advancement, it tends to be consistent. Developers are banging away at code each day. The rest of us are on here posting and commenting. Regardless of what takes place in the rest of the world, we just keep doing that.

Once the floodgates start opening, when people start using crypto apps, the race will be on. Then we will see a lot more people joining.

No matter what goes on, when people want something they flock to it. And the crazier the world gets, the better it seems for crypto.

We are still early in the curve for HIVE and many cryptocurriences. It also means we are still in a risky position as we are still building the foundation of the block chain. As we make progress, the early adopters will definitely profit. I also hope there is 10x more users in crypto in a decade, but I also feel there will be many scams as it grows.

I also hope there is 10x more users in crypto in a decade, but I also feel there will be many scams as it grows.

I think both parts are guaranteed.

Unfortunately, human nature is still human nature and many will opt for shortcuts. There will be those who take advantage of the unsuspecting, meaning it will only grow with the numbers.

It is a sad reality that we have to deal with. That said, those projects that arent scams and do not offer promises of overnight wealth, those need to be pushed.

Do you really believe we are still pre-chasm?
It seems like we were in the chasm doldrums last, last year.

Now, it could be that bitcoin is everything and all things.
Its just software, so it could inherit ALL the features.

Instead of bitcoin and litecoin and hive
we could see
bitcoin.litecoin and bitcoin.hive
but this can only happen after things get really set in stone.
It could happen, but it really retards growth.

That said, cross-platform swapping algorithms, once they get really seamless
will make everything bitcoin.
Your phone may send digibyte and litecoin. The coffee shop may have CoffeeCoin (a coffee futures coin) as its main holding, but all both people see on the screens is how much bitcoin.

There is one big caveat for the growth of cryptos.
Most of the financial markets are going to evaporate.
Those big, big numbers won't be able to be converted into bitcoin.
The on-ramp is too small. And the pressure that will destroy the old system too big.

Do you really believe we are still pre-chasm?

Hard to tell, it seems we have chasm like experiences every couple of years. We might be passed it but who knows.

The part about Bitcoin is interesting. We will have to see how this all unfolds. Bitcoin looks like it will be the asset that a new financial model is built upon although I am not sold on everything diverting into Bitcoin. In fact, that seems to go against the shift, in general, away from centralization of computing.

Nevertheless, we will have to see where the development takes us. If that is the direction coders go and it is quickly adopted, which is could be, then we might have our answer.

The existing financial markets do not know how screwed they are. They think the WallStreetBets was a slap to the face, they havent seen anything yet. That is a small ripple in the tidal wave that will eventually flatten them.

They will be all trying to get into the safe lifeboat as the ship starts sinking. Unfortunately for them, there will be very few seats. The bloat is going to take most down.

In my opinion it will be some bitcoin fork in the future that can act more like a currency. Effective currencies lead to true economic prosperity and in that masses of people see usefulness and ease of use is also necessary. Bitcoin is none of that. Bitcoin is a now corporate wallstreet rich mans' game. It's like walking up to the average person and trying to trade them gold for their dollars. They find more use in their dollars because more people accept them. Bitcoin feels like a venture capitalist and wallstreet fantasy come true and they own chunks of it probably almost all of it.

So i don't think the onboarding and adoption will come from bitcoin or 99% of altcoin projects. I think it will more than likely be a bitcoin fork with a good distribution system to the people where it was meant to be and not controlled by big insitutions and corporations .. a system not a business on the blockchain. An economic overall system that works for the people otherwise we can use the systems we already have in play.

You mean like Litecoin?

The problem is that a digital cryptocurrency is only a step towards real money.
Real money has really weird properties.
Like it can't be accumulated, nor can it be skimmed. (but these are not the correct terms, something along the lines of you cannot make getting money for money's sake a thing.)

When a person manufacturers something, they also need to create money for which someone to buy it.
So the money, and the good, travel around in a big circle, and then extinguish themselves.

This kinda stuff will just be built into the block-chain of the future, but today they sound like weird, way out there, concepts.

No i highly doubt i mean like Litecoin. Litecoin is likely following the pattern of bitcoin. It's probably likely Litecoin distribution is even several times worse than bitcoin and every bitcoin fork for the most part. Bitcoin distribution is poorer than any major asset class in existence i'm sure.

I agree with this point.. ."Real money has really weird properties.
Like it can't be accumulated, nor can it be skimmed. (but these are not the correct terms, something along the lines of you cannot make getting money for money's sake a thing.)

Yes like staking to no end and seemingly this is what we do in most crypto projects. Bitcoin for example is no more valuable at $1 than it is at $100k. Speculation can push it to any value. We don't know the real value and large scale manipulation can achieve such things quite easily. So yes i agree with your point about the cycle of money. That's why at best i rate and value crypto projects on users and network. The more " attention value" the possibility of more value.

So to me for the most part cryptocurrencies haven't garnered enough attention value. It has the attention of institutions but not really retail investors.

There is so much that changed over the past 25 years and now we are in a situation where things are moving at an even more rapid pace. The fact that most of the world is on smartphones means we are going to see a massive acceleration in the distribution of technology.

I still remember my favorite search engine that was Altavista, wow, yahoo disappeared, and I can't believe how fast Google grew, so maybe we're fine for now, we have to run more so that when the mass arrives we are already well positioned to be a star for there.
Yes, I know everyone is involved in BCT, but remember that as Doge has even educated people, he has had his leading role in the crypto world and maybe it has been a great way and today I read that someone has accepted it as a means of payment, imagine That is something strange, no, but the strangest thing is how it works, that meme blockchain works and allows anyone with a few cents to enter, well today you need US $ 20.00 to enter Bitrex for example
MMMMM thinks it will be too early yet? Sometimes I think people say that I am crazy promoting crypto and much more when I talk about hive blockchain, so I say wow, we are still good, hopefully we are.
On the microbloggiin hopefully it is like that and it is a great way to attract the masses here or at least with a good part it would put us on the radar.
I hope so in the meantime we must continue working hard or trying to do it, to attract the rest to our beloved chain.

Many do not remember the early search engines. There were a ton. Still Yahoo was the king of the hill for a short period of time. Then Google cleaned everyone's clock in search. It happened at a rapid rate, much in line with how the internet grew.

... where we are in the process.

OK, I'll note this, because I have the same concerns described in the first paragraph.

Web 3.0 is indeed a logical entry point for those who want to dive into the crypto world, in contrast to previous methods of mining Bitcoin which are very difficult and complex which require a lot of resources.

It is interesting to see how the projected number of one billion crypto users in 2025 really makes sense or even more. Who knows?

I’d love to see cryptos adopted by the masses. But as you said the race is on and those people are not used to lose.
I’m still worried they still can just pull the plug if they can’t control us by regulations.
The accelerated rate of control on people is astonishing, why would they let this one go if it gives back so much freedom.
There’s something I can’t figure out yet.

The numbers are starting to get to the point where it is too big. Maybe not now but if we double the users in 2020, that will be huge.

Plus having applications that actually attract people will only increase the pace which it happens.

Couple our pace of development with the governments slow pace and we can see how the window is closing fast on them.

Still it will get hard to get masses of people as nobody knows Hive and the more we are shilling on Twitter, the more those advocates will be shut down, like seen with Reddit. That Leo microblogging UI would be a direct competitor to Twitter!
And besides that the level of marketing is still zero. So no way to dream of million people onboarding.
Or think about Signal. Everybody (exc. the dumb mass) knew it is way better than Whatsup, but still it was lacklustering. Only when Whatsapp messed up and Elon advertized, things changed.
So unless we have an Elon tweeting "one word: Hive", it won´t get easy :) and even then probably that mining company with the same name would skyrocket.

That is fine if the advocates are shut down. It doesnt take very many to garner some attention. Plus there are a lot of displaced people already from twitter who are seeking an alternative.

The market is there, they are just looking for a solution.

I think you underestimate how quickly things can change. You dont need 1 million users to start; 50K would make an enormous difference and provide a baseline to explode from. That is the key.

When you have a baseline of a few hundred, or even a thousand, it takes a long time even at a high growth rate to get some serious numbers.

If we're likening it to the Internet, that means we're nearing the golden age.

My view is it will be bigger, in terms of impact, than the Internet was.

It will take a number of year, perhaps near the end of this decade before it is fully realized.

Woo is suggesting that Bitcoin will go from roughly 70 million users to more than 1 billion in the next 4 years.

Considering that he's a maximalist as you pointed out in the post we could say that actually crypto as a whole will be used by 1 billion people in the next 4 years.

Having in mind crypto's exponential growth that's nothing that couldn't be achieved.

I would also add that the tokenization process of many of our mundane internet activities will weigh heavy in the cryptonization of the world.

Agreed.

I am not sure there will be a billion bitcoin users; I feel more comfortable making that assessment for crypto users in general.

I would also add that the tokenization process of many of our mundane internet activities will weigh heavy in the cryptonization of the world.

That will be key. Getting people involved through their various online efforts will bring in a ton of users. The apps just need to be developed to get a couple hundred million people involved in the next 18 months or so.

Bitcoin is the Model T Ford of all this movement but I imagine that people will be unlikely to accept its limitation for day to day use in the future. Faster, more efficient cars came along and so will it be in blockchain.
The decentralised social media aspect will for sure become very important. It is getting rid of another gatekeeper in the flow of information. Exchanging ideas and value freely is what this is all about to me. I'm so happy to be here near the start, Staking my claim.

Getting rid of the gatekeeper for not only social media but also for financial affairs. That is a huge step forward.

For me it all starts with the embracing of mega coins likes Bitcoin and ethereum then it trickles down to functional blockchains that provide utility either be it entertainment in terms of gaming or social media function. This would be the point of r the big break. Currently, we are not there yet. So I believe there is still time to get in and make something tangible.

Things will start to spread out. As we see more people, the different projects will gain popularity.

The growth will not come from those bringing money as much as those who are bringing them attention and support to different applications. It is there they will be receiving crypto.

Indeed Most of projects are in innovation and early adoption stage. As the development goes on people starts to get onboard. With all the drama financial institutes and centralized entities are doing, Future is near when millions of people get there. This would be a chain reaction. We must prepare for it in every way and keep developing.

Thanks,

Crypto is so needed
the growth could be hard
to put in words.
Early, yes we are still in early phase.
A token like Hive with its low price
can reap the reward immensely.
Keep eternalized your thoughts
to the blockchain.

I don’t see how Bitcoin could be the only survivor of crypto. It just doesn’t make any sense, plus it’s very slow. While the increase in usage makes total sense and the numbers backing it are a good example. There’s only 30% of all Bitcoin available to us, the rest is gobbled up already by big players. That makes it harder to believe. I guess time will tell.

The challenge with this is the fact that cryptocurrency still has not found the "Killer DApp".

What if we theorize that Telegram cryptocurrency was exactly this. At the time Telegram had 400 million users and many active communities. It would have been at the very least 400 million cryptocurrency users tipping each other pocket money. Even that lowest assumption should qualify for a killer DAPP IMO.

That is true but the 400 million are not using cryptocurrency.

Will Leo's project reach that level? We will see.

At this point, 50,000 would be a major breakthrough.

I agree with most of things. I myself didn't believed in crypto and bitcoin at start and thought it is a scam. But Now i'm here with you trying to make my way to the new world. I just joined the space a few days ago and started posted. I'm proud that i still adopted the technology in early adoption so when masses will come i will be ready to take them. Thanks for great post.

It's cool to see that we're still at the early adoption stage. Going by that trend the next phase would be massive and there would also follow a massive disruptions in traditional systems.

This is going to really hit home how early we all are when the time comes. When your friends start talking about joining the blockchain social media and blogging tribes you know we are there so still some time to go. Hive and a few others will seriously go through a growth curve as that is where the masses are going to join first I believe. Hive and it's 13 week security blanket for powering down is the biggest advantage and selling point we have and must not be underestimated.

The day will come when someone will come up to you and mention the app and you will say "already on there. I was there from the beginning."

It is still early days. Bitcoin and ETH are gaining momentum. Lots of scam coins have scared off many investors, particularly during 2017. It will be a wild ride ahead.

So glad to read about this. That means if we keep making good moves over the next four years, we'll be in a great position by 2025.
