LeoThreads Can Be Bigger Than Most Think

Many of us are excited about LeoThreads. The question is whether this enthusiams is misplaced or not.

The Leofinance team has recently put forth their goals of 5K MAUs by the end of 2023. This is a very interesting turn for a few reasons.

To start, it is good to see a project team that is actually thinking like a business. Instead of talking about tokenomics, they are focusing upon a thing that is vital: growth.

So, on Hive, we have at least one group that is thinking about this from a necessary perspective.

The other point is the number itself. Why are we targeting 5,000? Is that a realistic number?

Are We That Pathetic?

Let me start by saying that I commend the team for their roadmap. It is good for teams to take this approach. What they spelled out is thought out and divided into manageable pieces.

This is goal setting 101 at its finest.

Also, how would Leofinance look with 5,000 MAUs? We know most will be on LeoThreads but it is still a very nice number. A 10x from the present levels is certainly impressive.

There is one other point: it is utterly pathetic and disappointing.

Here is a stat that should startle everyone.

seekingalpha.png

This is from Seeking Alpha. These are the numbers they promote on their website. Notice how there are 7,000 publishers and over 20 million montly users. Granted, we have a situation where many of those posting are paid and the users are simply readers but the point is driven home.

At the same time, we then have the Twitter numbers. Of course, now that it is private, we are not going to get information like we did before. Nevertheless, that is a couple hundred million people.

Isn't LeoThreads being modelled after Twitter? Aren't we talking about Twitter on the Blockchain?

The point is we are looking at a very small slice of the Internet pie. In fact, we could make the case we are suffering from an inferiority complex.

So what is the solution?

Bravado

This is showing some age but you get the point.

John Wayne was known for not only his courage, but also for bravado. He came to epitomize the attitude that we need to have.

For whatever reason, we have taken to panhandling. It is like we are begging people to pay attention to us. We are the loser standing in the corner just hoping the cool kids will talk to us.

My answer is screw that.

The time for groveling and begging is over. LeoThreads has the potential to change many things and we need to think like that. Unfortunately, we are at a point where few of us know what the new UI is like so we have to reserve judgment.

However, if the new application is kick ass and truly does bring the "Twitter experience" from the first page one lands upon, then we know it is time to change our tactics.

And that is where bravado enters.

There is no need to whine or kiss ass. Too often I see Hiveans just hoping some crypto influencer will notice us. How often does someone tag Jack Dorsey hoping the slimeball will acknowledge us.

Here is the deal: he doesn't care about freedom, decentralization, or Hive.

And neither does Elon Musk.

They are not about what we are offering there. Their realm is control and power. Whether you like or dislike them, matter none. It is simply the world we live in.

So stop wasting time being a begger and think of the Duke. Stick that chest out and realize we have a great thing going.

Here is the attitude: either you are on LeoThreads or you are mentally ill.

Period.

Bigger Than Any Of Us Think

There is something called the network effect. This is a powerful force especially in the digital world. Did you see how some of the alternative twitter apps took off. They realized the network effect, right before they plunged.

LeoThreads can be bigger than most of us think. This is because we tend to underestimate how big the network effect can be.

For this reason, it is likely the 5,000 MAU goal is not possible. There is no way to we will be at 5,000 MAUs by the end of 2023.

Instead, here is a more likely outcome:

  • we are sitting at the same 500-600

or

  • we have tens of thousands of users and growing at an insane rate

There really is no middle ground. In the digital world, there are few minor successes. Things either take off or they go nowhere.

Look at Splinterlands a couple years ago. That was signing up 10K accounts per day for a while. This was for a digital card game few heard about.

With LeoThreads we are talking about microblogging. Almost everyone in the modern world heard of Twitter. We are not talking about a small market.

It is time to stop half assing it.

A lot of work went into getting us to this point. We have a lot of things working in our favor. For this reason, screw them.

It is time to act like the big swinging you know what of cryptocurrency. We have the best game in town.

Let's start acting like it.

A goal of 5,000 users is about as exciting as masturbating with a cheese grater.

Time to set our sights much higher.

This! A much needed kick in the arse to not underestimate what LeoThreads really is and what it can do or achieve in the sooniverse.

Think big they say and we must. The 5k MAU is pretty conservative and I'm inclined to believe that we will go beyond that.

LeoThreads and leoglossary both have a lot of potential in order to ad value in base layer hive blockchain, currently only few people can realize it but in future everyone will see how big these two ideas are

For adoption even within the existing HIVE community we need more.

Right now it is just lacking activities. If we were to get to 1000 threads per day plus responses, i can’t imagine the existing UI would serve it justice.

Need an App for it, and encourage people to post anything and everything.

New generations don’t sit in front of a PC or a laptop anymore, nor opening browsers on the phone just to “Thread”.

Trying to even sign in to HIVE on a mobile device is not as simple as Keychain or MetaMask on a computer.

The problem quite honestly is there is not enough feedbacks to keep it going, not enough upvotes (or likes), chicken or egg, also need new users.

It is lacking the hook. Not much monetization going on, not much feel good likes, it’s like pouring your heart out and tweet into the void.

HIVE is a database, if Thread felt like Twitter maybe it’s easier for people to adapt to it quickly and encourages more usage.

For starters, something like Ecency for LeoThreads is welcomed and take hints from Twitter, then we can start to get the ball rolling rapidly.

Still have to solve user sign-up and on-boarding to HIVE, I am told it is confusing even for people who is already in BTC for years.

We have a small community, let’s not get stuck in the echo chamber.

Progress is good, we can grow faster and come up with the right solutions, to think like a business owner, if we properly define the audience we target. If we continue to only cater to the same people that are already well versed, then we won’t expand outwards.

Take the perspective of the 95%, who don’t know what HIVE is but are content with Twitter and Facebook, solve for that. We can start with 5% of the 95% who are into crypto if the market is even that size right now.

Very well-said. Thanks for these thoughts! 😊

There are certainly multiple things that can be improved in the interface and onboarding process. Seeing what I have over the past few weeks gives me confidence that LeoFinance developers are indeed working on improving all factors. I hope that the larger front-facing apps (i.e. Ecency, etc.) will also adopt a form of Threads with a similar interface as the final product that LeoFinance produces.

I agree with you. There is no reason why Ecency should not tap into the contrainers and offer Threads (or whatever they want to call it) through their app. It is a blockchain based feature now.

As for the sign up, this is where a couple projects are looking to alter how that happens. We will see what they bring out.

Finally, you can talk about the challenges and lack of ease of use but there are over 2 million accounts already. The reality is to pull in, say 25K is not dealing with huge numbers.

Go big or stay home! I agree. This is an all or nothing proposition. We either do nothing or launch. Well, it starts with us. If we don't use it, how can we expect others to pick it up. LFG!

Yeah that is my motto.

No point in going broke over a duplex. If you are going to be a real estate investor, buy some properties.

We have a tremendous opportunity, time to act like it.

This analysis does make good sense, thanks for the insights. 😊

I think some important features have to be implemented for better adoption, even among Hivers; namely, a single-click ability to see prior Threads that a user has posted, and notifications for followers that a Thread has been posted. The former is important in case someone only wants to follow the short-form posts without digging through a user's entire posting history; the latter is a rapid way to increase visibility. Those users who are alerted to threads and see them getting attention will be more likely to participate.

There are certainly some things that can be done to add to the interface. Since I havent seen the new one, we will have to temper our statements regarding that. I am trying to go based upon what Khal said so far since I have no firsthand experience.

He claimed that opening the UI immediately gives someone the Twitter feel.

Lets see when the Alpha is opened to more people what the feedback is.

Hahah I like how you are straight to the point, just like old Wayne was! Let's churn along and get people into it! Hell one of the good ways is to start right here at home and make sure we can get as many of the people on Hive onto it as we can! I know not everyone is into finance related content but that doesn't mean we can't post some threads! I've certainly been trying to do it and engage in some!

Most of the threads have little to do with finance.

That said, what is interesting is that by being involved in crypto, engaging in Web 3.0, you cant help but to be involved iwth finance.

I haven't really visited threads that much but I should visit it more if I have more time. There just isn't enough time in the day.

I'm with you on this 100%. Either we explode or nothing happens at all.

One thing we are missing for the network effect to really kick in is a referral program IMO. We need to set some funds aside for people that will onboard new users but we would also need to turn LEO into a DAO before that could happen I guess.

There is no other incentive for people to spread the word. Even if you lay out the bigger picture in front of them (more users = more revenue for you and your Leo power) they still won't go out and do the dirty work because everyone is expecting someone else to step up.

I would disagree. The biggest online successes arent due to referral programs. What did TikTok offer? Facebook?

People gravitate towards stuff they like and find cool. From this perspective, it is important to build stuff that captures people's attention.

When they are touched at that level, they cant help but to tell others.

Both Facebook and TikTok brought something new to the table. While Twitter on the blockchain is very unique it is still a 1:1 replica of an existing concept, but with rewards.

For people who understand the benefits of such a platform, you won't need much marketing, but that's a small demographic currently.

A good example for my argument would be Lens protocol. From my understanding, it is very similar to Hive but still in closed beta. Even in this state they have way more people interested than we do with Hive and Hive-related products and they are all available today.

The only reason they got this many people wanting to join is marketing.

This only works with a good mobile app.
People live on their phones and not their laptops so the leo team is going to have to put some major work into the user experience on the app to mirror twitter.

At the moment it just doesn't work so hopefully the focus goes the this after the new site launches.

I like Threads and I appreciate all the work that has gone into it. I need to learn more about it so I understand how it is organized. I am unsure how the links list on the right works now. I wold especially like to be able to view all threads with similar tags and I think it does that now.

Pretty Fiesty post with a real grating ending. :(
LOL.. just kidding. I think I get the point, we should start holding our heads up high and share the news of how great we are!
