Metaverse: The End Of Hollywood

Hollywood had a magical run. For the past 100+ years, it was the center of our entertainment world. It helped to put California on the map and spawned the careers of thousands of household names.

As they say, nothing lasts forever. There is a new game coming to town and it does not appear the movie studios are taking notice. This is going to be fatal.

We live in a world where people are always vying for our attention. This is what the entertainment world is. There are only so many discretionary dollars (or whatever unit of currency) to go around. Historically, Hollywood did very well in getting its share.

The Metaverse

This is a dynamic arena that is going to change everything. We will see the emergence of platforms related to this that are going to change work, socialization, communication, and, yes, entertainment.

Companies that see the future are already starting to take action. This is not going to be a repeat of the early days of the Internet where if you were a couple years late in setting up your website, no big deal. Instead, being a few years behind will be fatal.

To get an idea about what the Metaverse is, check out what is the Metaverse and how we can prepare.

Ultimately, we are going to be looking at a multi-dimensional world. It will no longer be static 2D interaction. Instead, we are going to see it moved to 3D along with, eventually, full immersion which will stimulate many of our sense at the same time.

Notice how this is not Hollywood. In fact, it also takes out broadcast television. Our entire media system is going to be under attack. But from whom is the question?

Before answering that, we need to realize we still are in the primitive stages of the Internet. This is a technology medium that we really have not started to utilize to any great degree. What we did so far is child's play compared to what is coming. This technology is capable of so much more and we are just starting to uncover what it can do.

This means all of society is about to change. Almost every industry will be affected to some degree, with a few being completely upended. In spite of this, we already saw the demise of a number of industries like long-distance phone service as well as many companies that simply did not adapt.

What is different this time is the next stage is on steroids compared to the last. It will obliterate a lot more in a much quicker period of time.

Experiential Internet

Going forward, it is all going to be about experience. As the technology increases in capability, we are going to shift from passive to active involvement. The Internet went from information to communication. This was a big step. However, the next phase is going to allow us to share experiences with different people.

Hollywood still is a passive industry. It creates content that entertains. Even the most successful ventures are passive experiences. We watch a film, no matter how entertaining, and we are separate from it. In other words we are on the outside looking in.

Do you know an industry that is not that way? Is there something where activity is stressed over passive behavior?

There is one that is likely to step up as a driving force in the Metaverse. That industry is gaming.

We are rapidly getting to the point where gaming companies can provide most of what Hollywood offers, and then some. Gaming is at the forefront of Virtual Reality, already looking to incorporate it in. This is going to take the experience from 2D to 3D.

At the same time, gaming immerses us in the action. Instead of watching a war or space exploration film, we can be a part of it. The game is designed where we impact the activity as opposed to the script being written for us. In the future, expect the opportunity to be involved in the game, even in a passive capacity. What this means is we can view the activity taking place but as an immersed observer.

Gaming can expand to into so much more. It is likely they will be the major media companies of the future. They are already in the process of establishing platforms that will allow for the integration of more entertainment mediums as the technology grows.

Here is where we are going to see a massive upsetting of the entire television and film industry. It is something that is hard to visualize at the moment but then again, how many saw the demise of Blockbuster and Kodak in the manner they went down?

In the end, it is far easier for gaming companies to develop the advanced graphics and story lines than it is for Hollywood to adopt an interactive model. The forward progress simply is ill-suited for them.

Ultimately, the further we move towards the Metaverse, the closer the end for Hollywood.

one thing I've been thinking about for a while is how ai will be able to easily just remix and re edit existing works and it's gonna be really wild - like imagine a mario home brew game but redoing some old movie, or adding your own sequel or something- fan fiction type stuff

it's probably a ways off still but I've thought about that for awhile and i definitely see it happening. maybe Hollywood would do it first. .. make star wars 3.5 or whatever

I really like the concept of the metaverse. To be able to experience virtual reality like you're really there appeal greatly to me. Personally though if we have the metaverse technology now, I would prefer that it would be used for gaming as games allow us to control our characters whichever way we pleases unlike movies where we could only watch. Of course, I'm not saying that the metaverse could not or should not be used in movies. Being inside a movie like your one of the characters is also a very tempting prospect but it won't change the fact that you could only be "one of the characters" in movies without the power to change anything unlike games. But I digress.

Anyways, I agree with you that the metaverse could indeed spell the end of Hollywood. Actually, even without the metaverse Hollywood would still become a memory considering the quality of the movies they're making these days. I do think that adopting the technology to be used in their movies could save them though. But that's just my opinion.

I'm just here to watch and be entertained. Whatever movies they churn out is fine by me. I will watch those I prefer. Metaverse in the Marvel universe is getting exciting! 😊

Well the thing is i was thinking do they even need the actors anymore? Ai systems can remix sounds and combine voices and cgi actors and all that. Even now it's pretty darn good. Imagine in 10 years i don't think they will even need that. The thing is it goes even further than that. It's not just can an ai system replace some repetitive task work some place. No ai will replace all human creativity even your writing.

That's the crazy part people thinking about oh it's not going to be a need for us to worry about the 4th industrial revolution let's get through that and everyone becomes computer programmers and elon musk types. So that's what they thinking. the problem is the computers making better music then these stupid electronic dj's and people still acting like they blind as a bat and not taking any actions or looking for any solutions about this massive problem. they rather focus on building games. No these artificial minds will be better writers, and entertainers and musicians and artist than you all. I'm already tired of listening and reading and watching movies with you all in it. The computer and ai may be more entertaining then many of the $20 plus my date so that comes to $200 .. they may be more entertaining maybe the movies will be cheaper without these mediocre actors and i can maybe pay cheaper than $20 a movie. that's how i feel about it.

The thing that computers do better than humans is getting larger each day and the things that humans can do better than machines decreases each day.

To answer your question: there will come a point where actors are no longer needed. They will end up computer generating stars.

Exactly and here's my problem with you crypto people. Your flagships right now are games. Okay i'm not against games i can see games providing somewhat of a solution. Maybe you all sit home all day playing games and you earn a living or whatever. I saw this dystopia televsion show called black mirror where humans no longer have anything to do. So they simultaneously ride an exercise bike and watch advertisments constantly all day all night they go to sleep watching ads and that's how humans as a society make a living now in a tech advanced dystopian world.

My problem with you guys is that even if that's the case or what you term as a solution. I've looked at the data and the top performing games still gain no more than about 100 million users. Bitcoin supposedly has 100 million users. You gotta take me out of the equation as well as i'm not a gamer so what i'm suppose to do lol.

In evolutionary biology if you study it. The maximum storage capacity of our craniums have been reached. It can't get any bigger unless we walk around like those aliens with a head so big it can barely support our necks. For the life of me i don't understand the incredible high level of ignorance in one of the most advanced technologies right now this face of the earth.

I don't get why you all don't see this as a main problem you all should go after in this space. You still looking to find that needle in the haystack business idea or something. We are efficient at finding next technology businesses that make the world better. We are not efficient at dealing with the job displacement it causes at this level.

Why would that not be your focus. We've done the grunt of the work creating these ubi systems that offer solutions. We've done automated curation systems on our platforms to keep you all from turning the space into a giant pyramid ponzi scheme which you all constantly do time and time again. THere is an old proverb you can bring a horse to water but you can't make them drink"

You all gotta put aside this old imploding capitalist model. Even in the face of it's doom you all still try to hold on to it. You see the world falling apart you still either promote it or bury your heads in the sand. it is asinine ..it is futile it is ignorant and it is dumb.

You walk in your supermarkets and your factories and you see once was a sea of people working. Now you can barely find one actual human being. I do it all the time. In the west we live in a place where there is very little manufacturing of anything anymore and certainly not by a human being. The answer we get is we surpassed the last several industrial revolutions. Those examples aren't even applicable. Do you all have your priorities even a little bit straight? I think not. The only reason i preach still to this day. I don't have to people either accept ubi or not it's always going to be that way. It's always going to be those that do and those who lost.

I do it because i remember an old bible mythology about john the baptist crying out in the wilderness" and yet the end of jerusalem did come and end brought down by the romans":

Ultimately the digital world will be better at creating the environment required for movies. Though I think they can kind of get away with it using current technology with more work. It does seem they want to shift their focus from the box office to the streaming services but it has only opened another can of worms as people are suing the companies.

I like reading such posts about the metaverse. It makes me get a better understanding of this, but I believe it will take quite some time until those will be "the norm". As a side note, Anthony Hopkins next movie will be released as an NFT,said a news today.

It is a long time in developing. This is not something that is going to be here tomorrow. In fact there will be no "on switch" where the Metaverse is turned on.

We will just progress in stages with different things emerging.

There is still a lot of advancement in computing that is required.

Nice article Task. I think Metaverse will be so huge and Hollywood will become a tiny part of it. For ex: If someone makes a virtual city with cinema halls in it. People can go and watch movies with their virtual friends and even interact with the movie characters.

TVs and monitor screens will be replaced by VR Goggles.

It is all going to change. The Metaverse is certainly something that is going to alter all of society. As mentioned above, this is an evolutionary process which will take some time to unfold.

Metaverse, hhmm originated from animation into gaming into movies. Contents and scriptings are drying up in the hollywood calender and time is ticking but we still humans and I hope this doesn't further affects our pschological thinking about entertainment come fifty years after

Do you think Hollywood will simply die off / become irrelevant or there will be a merger between the movie industry and the gaming industry and VR?

Historically speaking, Hollywood's answer to challenges made by new technology was to go bigger. When television appeared in 1950s, the big studios began to make enormously expensive films made in colour, 2.35:1 picture format and other stuff you couldn't experience at home with tiny black and white set. Big disaster epics in 1970s were answer to challenge made by foreign and independent film in grindhouse and drive-in theatres. Same was true for 1980s sci-fi and other blockbusters competing with emerging home video market.

However, "going bigger" in present circumstances, when audience has unimaginably huge choice of alternatives, might not work as it did in past decades.

I know this is a bit late, but I followed the article trail from your latest write-up on the Metaverse concept.

So, I honestly hadn't thought about the "movie industry" in ages, and the reason is pretty simple. Hollywood stopped making films that appealed to me in any way, a long time ago. I don't pay for movie tickets and I don't watch new movies at all, and haven't for years now.

The concept of a metaverse incorporating indie movie production - oh boy - Hollywood has no idea what's coming for them. They thought YouTube was harmful to their bottom line, so they sued the shit out of them back in the day, I think the first one to cry was Viacom. It's rare to find full-length feature films on YouTube in 2022.

A metaverse where you could go see a movie, in VR, removes the need for Hollywood really at all, and much like a VR-accessible art gallery (for both real world art and NFTs) is just the tip of the iceburg. I noticed the NBA provides VR feeds of certain game broadcasts (TNT comes to mind) and I know they did things for their All-Star Weekend in February this year.
