Sora To End Hollywood Studios?

Over the last 6 to 8 months, we saw a massive move forward in artificial intelligence. The advancement of chatbots, as an example, shows how powerful this is. Each week, it appears a new release by one of the major players tops what went before.

This is not limited to just LLMs. We are seeing massive progress with video, especially from OpanAI. Sora was a major breakthrough when it came out.

Now, the company is taking things to the next level.

Hollywood Studios In Jeopardy?

I am on record as saying that Hollywood is going to be completely upended. The entire premise of entertainment is changing. We not only are seeing bigger players entering, the foundation of content creation is being disrupted.

When we hear that term (content creation), we typically think of those on social media, writing articles or making videos. However, the epitome, historically, has been Hollywood. The movie and television studios have dominated for a century.

This is changing. A future where a handful of companies are the major content creators seems unrealistic to me. What this means is an obliteration of the jobs, something that technology regularly does.

Here is where we see major changes coming. The industry is aware of it yet is impotent to stop it.

The latest release of Sora has driven this point home.

Here is a video that takes this viewpoint even further. While I am not sure it will eliminate all jobs, it will have a huge impact upon the content creation industry, i.e. Hollywood.

OpenAi Collaborating With professionals

The latest version of some of the works using the software appeared on the Sora blog.

As you can see from some of the videos, the quality is pretty amazing. These were the creations of people in the industry as notes below each one.

OpenAI is looking to get feedback from the professionals. This is something that we have to watch closely. Technology companies take the information to improve performance.

Where does this end? That is the question that will have profound implications on the future.

Here is one of the quotes from the blogs:

"Sora has opened up the potential to bring to life ideas I've had for years, ideas that were previously technically impossible,” she states. “The ability to rapidly conceptualize at such a high level of quality is not only challenging my creative process but also helping me evolve in storytelling. It's enabling me to translate my imagination with fewer technical constraints."

This is in reference to the technology as it stands today. Where will this be in 24 months?

Jobs are at risk. It appears that people are going to be able to create videos simply using text. I am on record as saying we will see 90 minute productions by the end of the year. While these are 60-90 second videos, they can be strung together.

It is a technology that is going to decentralize things.

Here is another quote from the blog:

Speaking to the wider industry, “people from all over the world with stories ready to burst out of their chests finally have the opportunity to show the world what’s inside.”

It is obvious that OpenAI wants the input of the professionals because this is who they are going to cater to. A lot of this technology is being rolled out for individual use. However, the money is with businesses.

Many of the people who are working as test cases have their own companies. Here is where the crux of the matter resides. People of this talent level can create incredible things. Ultimately, we are going to see a massive explosion in the amount of content over the next few years. Technology is going to expand the realm of creativity for these people.

This is being coupled with the fact that distribution channels are being altered. We already see companies like Amazon and Apple in the game. There is no reason to think that YouTube isn't going to enter this realm at some point.

Then we have the "upstarts". Here is where the massive disruption could come from.

The Bigger Fall With More Powerful Technology

Blockbuster and Kodak are two companies that are no longer around. They were large firms although not on the level of some of what is in the broadcast.

What we have, however, is a more advanced technological basis. As this increase, the level of disruption goes up. I am one who feels the disruption with the automotive industry, one of the largest there is, underway. By the end of this decade, we are going to see some of the largest legacy automakers affected.

This is something that, like Hollywood, is going to see massive job disrupted.

How it all plays out remains to be seen. What we know, is companies will not hesitate to cut costs. Technology does that, often at the expense of jobs.

Is Sora the answer? We will see what else emerges.

When we look at the unemployment rates, according to Statista, by major, we see two things on the list that make this concerning.

These are already above the national unemployment rate. That does not bode well for the future since the technology is just beginning.

Overall, AI is going to affect those areas where there isn't a great deal of regulation or a safety issue. This means industries, such as education and healthcare, will be slower to adapt. With movies and television, neither of these is place.

Long standing industries are going to see massive changes. The tentacles of disruption are only just getting started.

What other industries could be at risk due to this technology? We will find out as more is rolled out.

When Sora Releases to public later this year then we might see massive shakeup in the hollywood scene but Sora is something that was not expected to be a seperate product from the "GPT" lineup because people thought "AI Video creation" would be a huge part of "GPT-5" which is expected to come out either later this year or may be in 2025 but I think OpenAI has decided to make sure that their Text, Images and video products all separate products somehow.

I saw an article a few days ago where OpenAI are pitching Sora to Hollywood. I think Disney will be salivating at the idea of Generative AI. They already have the facial and vocal data of actors, so they can easily create films from those together with AI.
