Market Friday. Summer Book Alleys

Great summer weather is taken as a gift, it's a wonderful time for a walk. I decided that going to the store or the mall on a day like this was just silly, I wanted to stay in an open space and chose to visit the boulevard, which temporarily became a store.

Transforming an ordinary street into a bookstore is simple and accessible magic. All you have to do is set up a few book stalls and protect them with awnings from the scorching rays of the sun and the cold raindrops of rain.

PXL_20220728_143852805.jpg

Vendors are happy to display their goods on one of the main city streets, where there are always many passers-by. Tourists and locals alike enjoy approaching the book stalls to add variety to their walk.

PXL_20220728_143936860.jpg

But for the transformation to be complete, a few more elements must be added. A great idea was to install a small stage at the back of the alley. This stage is used for performances by writers, poets, publishers and other people associated with book publishing. In the evenings there are film screenings, usually selecting old, beloved films.

There is a small stall nearby where you can buy a coffee or a cold drink. It's a stall with a literary twist: the large white letters are a quote from the work of the great Russian writer, Nobel Prize winner Joseph Brodsky.

After visiting book alley I continued my walk along Malaya Konyushennaya street. It's a short and quiet street next to Nevsky Prospect, perfect for a short walk.

PXL_20220728_143940855.jpg

There are several cafes and restaurants with a variety of cuisines in the first floors of the buildings. Some of these cafes boast original decorations. Near the entrance to the rock cafe, the figure of a guitarist is frozen. I walked a little closer to get a close-up picture.

PXL_20220728_144821154.jpg

I turned onto the next street. A long line attracted my attention. Children and adults, students and old ladies were all waiting patiently for an opportunity to enter the humble door of the old café and get their portion of hot puff pastries sprinkled with powdered sugar and a cup of coffee.

PXL_20220728_145542476.jpg

Honestly, such a frenzy seems a little strange to me, this place is really nice to visit, but not so much as to stand in a long line. This cafe has become popular due to the fact that the assortment and the interiors remain unchanged for a long time.

PXL_20220728_150407145.jpg

Older people come here to remember the taste of their childhood. Young people visit this cafe out of curiosity, because this address is listed in informal guides around the city.

PXL_20220728_150421959.jpg

I only come to this cafe in late fall and winter, after the tourist season is over. I don't like lines:) But these queues have a useful function: thanks to this popularity, this old cafe will not be closed and will not disappear from the city map.

PXL_20220728_143631997.jpg

That was the end of my short walk. I returned to Nevsky Prospect and took a final picture of the window of a music store.

This is my entry for the #marketfriday challenge by @dswigle.

Wow! This is interesting @tatdt. I've only been to a Book Fair once on a ship that was moored on a habour in Montego Bay. I got carried away and purchased so many books that unfortunately I never got to read.
I still find the concept fascinating though:)))

I have a complicated relationship with the book trade: I love paper books, I love the rustle of the pages, I love looking at book illustrations... But paper books take up so much space in my small apartment! E-books are a lot more convenient!:)

Thank you very much for your attention to my post, @millycf1976! Have a good evening!

I love that all the book stores are outdoors, in the open! We don't have that here, too much hot sun and/or too much rain!

Yes, it's very nice to have a bookstore like this! It only works in the summer - in the fall the rains start often and the stalls are removed until next year.

Thank you so much!

I have seen a long line to a donut cafe on Bolshaya Konyushennyaya. Strange but ...why not :)

This stage is used for performances by writers, poets, publishers and other people associated with book publishing

Interesting. When, what time?

It would be interesting to see what's the fuss about the old cafe is all about. I hope you get to show us next time. I don't like lines as well, slow traffic and crowded places.

What an array of books! I would be lost in time just perusing on those and probably pick one or two and start reading right away in one of the cafes nearby :D

Happy #MarketFriday!

This is such a wonderful walk!!! I would never go to a store in weather like this! That is just insane! Lucky for you, your city is so open to being in the fresh air, opening up the sidewalks so that you can do your perusing there.

The theater is so campy and cool, the artistic mind is so interesting and I love it. Nice touch with using Brodsky's quote and having a little corner to have conversations. Altogether a place I would love to wander into and watch an impromptu piece of acting/poetry/theater. That is why I miss New York City. Very eclectic styling and fun.

As you wander down the street and shoot pictures of life (I love that little statue!) I admire the beautifully planned architecture of the city. Grand, beautiful, artistic... It is like a piece of art.

Thank you, once again for showing off the beauty! You do it so well! I can hardly wait for autumn so we can get a decent cup of coffee at the cafe without those pesky tourists!!!! We have them too!

#MarketFriday began as a way to reach out across the globe and learn about different cultures through their markets, especially local markets and farmers' markets, and eventually branched out and evolved over time from straight shopping to a cultural affair as it highlights how we differ and then again, how much we are alike. We have become a melting pot of culture, but, it is still the Rituals, Festivals, food, architecture, and even your language/languages that separate us... Along with the fact that is these things are normal for us. There are unwritten rules that rule our social behaviors. I see this as allowing for increased tolerance between cultures and nations, and opportunities to come together on an even playing ground. A strong culture can be beneficial to a country as it promotes unity, especially during a crisis, peaceful debate, and open dialogue. I have learned so much about all of you and it has been an amazing experience. I can only hope that learning about each other can help us work together for a peaceful world.

This little stage is at the back of the street, I didn't know before that there was a lot going on there besides the open book trade. I found a place where the organizers of this fair post posters, I'm waiting for interesting announcements.

I used to think that tourists were sometimes noisy and crowded, but after two years of pandemic, I am genuinely happy to see every tourist who comes to our city. It's such a joy to see life go on!

Thank you so much!
