A couple of examples of my photo edits
A couple of examples of my photo edits
Some have asked about what I use or how I edit my photos so in this post I will share a couple of examples
I will start the post with a photo of the final edit of one that I will explain as if not the first photo on the post would be an unedited photo
Sony A7iii 17mm F8 1/20 Sec ISO 100

Let me start with a Long exposure photo I took one morning over the weekend
But let me first say
I have seen many a times people say or use the tag no filter unfiltered, straight off camera and I have no issue with that, but don't think if you shoot in Auto mode on a camera that the photo you get is unedited, when a camera is set to record images in jpg mode the camera is doing editing automatically.
and that's all well and good of course and what most do and should do its quick and easy and cameras and even phone cameras do an amazing jobs these days.
But for me I like to control the edit on the photos I take, so all the photos I take I shoot RAW
Now don't panic shooting RAW does not mean I am out taking photos naked and in the wild
RAW means the camera just catches whatever light it sees but does no adjustments.
Now before I go further I would like to point out for this post I may not have picked the best shots and not spent as much time editing as I usually do I wanted more to focus on the process
The first example I will do is of a single shot long exposure I did on the weekend at Fort Phoenix Park in Fairhaven.
Here is the shot straight off the camera
Sony A7iii 31mm F8 30 Sec ISO 100

The first thing I generally do is in Lightroom crop the image to my liking, which in this case was very minor, nd often I click the Auto button in Lightroom to see how it does, in most cases I will then do various adjustments, exposure, contrast, highlights and shadows, but in this case the tweaks I made after the auto button were fairly mild.
Now you may notice in these images some spots in the sky, those are dust on the sensor of my camera, which I cleaned and now I can say my sensor is spot free.
I should add for now, as sensors are dust magnets, and if you change lens outdoors as I often do you will get dust on your sensor.
Here is the initial edit in Lightroom.

I then take it into Photoshop, first thing I do is in this case edit out the spots in the sky with the spot repair tool.
Now I probably should have kept track of the edits I did in Lightroom, but from memory and it should be fairly accurate as it was only an hour or so ago, I didn't do too much with this one, a couple of tones curves and masks ( you use masks in photoshop so an edit can be limited to only a certain area of the photo), color balance and sharpening.
to give the final edit as shown below

HDR photo editing
the next example i will shot is a technique I often use these days Bracketed exposure shooting or HDR images.
IN short that is taking photos at three different exposures
let me show you what I mean
A normal exposure image
Sony A7iii 17mm F8 1/20 Sec ISO 100
One under exposed which catches more of the detail and color in the brighter areas.
Sony A7iii 17mm F8 1/80 Sec ISO 100
And one over exposed to catch more detail in the darker areas
Sony A7iii 17mm F8 1/5 Sec ISO 100
This is a handy technique to use when there is a wide range between lights and darks in what your trying to capture
.
I didn't used to like HDR processed images I did for a long time, but then I found a technique that works for me and still keeps it looking fairly natural, often HDR processing can be overdone and look unreal.
I take these three photos and merge them together, there are various programs that can do this, I do occasionally in Lightroom, using the photo merge tool, or I mostly merge them in a software called photomatix which has many tools and sliders to adjust the merged image.
here is the merged image in this example
Sony A7iii 17mm F8 1/20 Sec ISO 100

And then the process is pretty much as I described above for a single image, editing in both lightroom and Photoshop to produce the final image

And that’s all folks

This sounds awesome but at the same time too technical. But a couple of things are for everyone like keeping the camera lens clean and resizing them propotinately. Thank you!
Thanks, Yeah it is a bit complicated I tried to keep it to what I thought was simple and easy to understand but looking at it again I didnt exactly do that LOL
You never cease to amaze us with your shots. Beautiful photos as always.👍
Thanks Kindly truly appreciated
Pretty cool editing here. Some people go to far with their editing but you have done it nicely. Good job!
Thanks I appreciate your kind feedback :)
Good examples, you explained everything very clearly.
I also shoot in RAW and I like to process it manually, but I do all the processing in lightroom.
This is probably because I do not know how to work with layers and masks))

Thanks
For quite a few shots i just use Lightroom, but since I pay for photoshop as part of the deal I am trying to keep learning it, but it is a challenge LOL

How long does editing a picture usually take? Thanks so much for sharing your skills here :)
I love the last picture, it really looks like someone just exploring the docks on a beautiful morning.

Thanks so much for the visit
I think for a single photo I probably spend around 5 to 10 minutes on average,
for the three shot HDR, with the merging and editing, probably 15 Minutes or more

My pleasure :) I tagged you for an initiative, hopefully we are chosen :) If we are lucky in who is chosen, we could have this one done in a few minutes 🙌

Have a great day as well, looks like you settling into retirement now by getting out early. Regards to Lulu hope she is doing much better as well.
Nice shots, love the compiled and enjoyed seeing the component photos for comparison with it.
Thanks so much Have a great day
I really like your photos and edit version. I love sunset photographs, thanks for sharing with us.
Thanks for your visit and feedback
Sorry brother, for some reason I'm not really interested in editing the resulting photo. I like things with natural products. And it's a beach, like I like salty beach girls. Thank you, a lot of inspiration and additional knowledge.
Fair enough each to their own of course
Have a great day
Oh wow, that is really interesting. I guess I never really realized what the difference was with HDR. Now I do! I can see how the time and effort you put into these really makes a difference.
Congratulations, your post has been added to Pinmapple! 🎉🥳🍍
Did you know you have your own profile map?
And every post has their own map too!
Want to have your post on the map too?
You're completely right, JJ, the JPEG that you get out of the camera is already edited, but not even by the photographer himself. I think that's even worse than using Lightroom or Photoshop to develop/edit a RAW image. That way not the photographer decides how the image should look like, he lets the camera decide...
Great explanations of your workflow in Lightroom and Photoshop and also how you process HDR images.

Those are stunning edits you made for your photos. You even shared how you did them which is awesome. I have very elementary knowledge in photo editing and these are all amazing to me.
Thanks kindly
A few had asked so I thought a post was a good way to explain
Have a great day
And you explained them very well :) Thank you and I wish you a wonderful day
oh my gosh!!!!!!!!!!! hhahahahaha I had NO idea!!!!!!!!
This is really an art!!!!!! It's funny that you just showed this because the other day - I was doing EXACTLY this ... i mean - not the editing part. hahaha
but taking one picture to show the beauty of the sky (but then losing all the detail in the foreground)
and then focusing on the details in the foreground - but then the sky was all super-bright!
i had no idea that there was a program (I've heard @bluefinstudios using Lightroom!) that would merge them all so seamlessly!!!!!!!!!!
really! the amount of time that it must take to get JUST the right picture!!! gorgeous work - and worth the effort :)
that final shot of the boats with the sky and beautiful colors - wow... hehehehe i would have never known - but its STUNNING!!!!
Thanks kindly yea it is a bit of work
I get the odd well many comments that I must have a good camera which admittedly I do but it’s more than that
LOL
Hope your week has started well
hehehehe yeah - I always thought it was the camera!
but now I see its the man behind the camera LOLOLOL
and my week has started really well!!!! but the day is already flying by - hahahaha
Days tend to do that lol
Have a great evening
my hubby always tells me Study Lightroom, and your photos will be perfect
for now don't have enough time for it but when I see such transformations, I do want to have this skill too:>
btw tell me pls as a great professional photographer - who is a genuine photographer - that one who can catch a perfect moment, and it'll be great without any Lightrooms and Photoshops, just because his eye was able to see it and his cam was able to save it
or
that one who just is so skillful to make ordinary photos be masterpieces with the help of filters and programs?
There is a learning curve with Lightroom so may be better when you have more free time
As for which is better I think it’s a combination of both to be honest
Having the eye to know how to frame a photo and what is a good perspective
Knowing your camera well and the principles of photography and also very important
But editing is also important
Different people may say one is more important than the others but I believe myself it’s a good mix of all three
And lastly I am just a serious hobbyist not a professional
Have a great day
a serious hobbyist - a good description:)
I think so 👍
Hey @tattoodjay, sorry to jump in off-topic.
Do you mind reviewing and supporting the Hive Authentication Services proposal? That would be much appreciated.
Your feedback about the project is welcome too.
Thank you.
I just took a look and a great idea
On my phone it's nit letting me support it but I will later today or tomorrow morning when I get into my computer
Thank you for your support, really appreciate it! 👍
👍🙂👍
This morning I gave my support to it
Thank you for your support @tattoodjay, really appreciate it! 👍

An enjoyable and informative read!
Kind of you to share the secrets of the trade with us. You have incredible skillsets using Lightroom, Photoshop and Photomatix (a new one to me!) @tattoodjay
As a smartphone user, my "go-tos" are Galaxy's built in editing tools, Prismart and Snapseed. I downloaded Lightroom onto my desktop a few years ago but never used it.😀
Everything starts with capturing a decent photo.
Thanks for your feedback, cellphone cameras are pretty amazing these days and I have heard great reviews of snapseed, I have installed it but not used it yet
Excellent text and examples. I got tired of explaining that there is a difference between photo processing and photo manipulation.
I have demonstrated a couple of times that a photo ‘directly from the camera’ taken with automatic settings, sometimes has a more aggressive post processing by the camera itself than a raw photo processed in photoshop.
New generations of phones are also making photo corrections. I had a case where the phone added the Milky Way to the night landscape sky. It took me a while to realize that the Milky Way was not in that direction at all, and that it was the phone that applied the Star sky filter.
On the other hand, I once watched a documentary about Ansel Adams and his manipulations of famous photos of Yellowstone. Those photos are far more edited and retouched than I thought. If Ansel had a computer at his disposal, he wouldn't have thought for a second whether it was 'ethical' to use it for even more dynamic photos. 🙂
!LUV !BEER !PIZZA
<><
@tattoodjay, you've been given LUV from @dejan.vuckovic.
Check the LUV in your H-E wallet. (4/5)
Thanks for your feedback I try not to but want to laugh people get on there high horse thinking their phone or camera photos in jpg mode are unedited and hence they are amazing photographers
And I read a bit about Ansel as well and his darkroom work was so intricate far from what most people think photo developing is
Have a great day
