A Visit to Fort Phoenix in Fairhaven

For todays post I am sharing a few shots from Fort Phoenix State Reservation in Fairhaven

Fort Phoenix is a former American Revolutionary War-era fort located at the entrance to the Fairhaven-New Bedford harbor, south of U.S. 6 in Fort Phoenix Park in Fairhaven, Massachusetts. The fort was originally built in 1775 without a name, and added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1972. Just off the fort, in Buzzards Bay, was the first naval engagement of the American Revolution, the Battle off Fairhaven on 14 May 1775

On 5–6 September 1778, the fort was destroyed by the British when they raided the harbor. A force under Major Israel Fearing drove off the British, both at the fort and when they attempted an attack on the town the next day. The fort was then renamed Fort Fearing. In 1784 it was given the name "Fort Phoenix" after the mythical bird that rose from its own ashes.

as well as cannons and remnants of the Fort, the park has a nice walking path out on the hurricane barrier, tennis courts and a beach, but for this post I will focus mainly on the cannons as the sun rises

This time of year I do not visit this park often, as during summer they lock the car park entrance at night, I am guessign to stop people coming late at night and partying and messing up the beach, a shame people do that and cause the park to be closed for others to enjoy in the early morning.

There is a road justy outside the park, but signs say no parking before 7Am, now I could probably ignore the no parking signs and not get ticketed, but I don't risk it and the odd time I visit there during summer i park a few blocks away and walk there

So interesting to see the canon was built to rotate. Don’t think I ever saw that before.
Beautiful views and the colours are great.
To bad they have to close down the car park, but you can at least enjoy it at other times.
Thanks for sharing @tattoodjay 😁👋🏻

Yeah I found that so interesting I am not sure I have ever seen that before either
I bit of a pain they close the park, but I can either get a few more steps in if I want to go there or head to somewhere else

The fort was originally built in 1775 without a name

Such an old building built in such year. Though it's still looking beautiful and the cannon, I like it. I wish I could see one in reality instead of staring at it in movies or as picture. These are amazing shots 👍

Yes indeed very old and well preserved, it is cool to be able to visit forts like these

Second to last capture is the one I enjoy with lighting enough to see the tracks where the guns moved position along, great detail how swing motion was used to aim up or down the coastline.

Thanks for another historical piece of information from Fort Phoenix.

I don't know as though I have ever seen cannons on rails like that so they can move them back and forth. Makes a lot of sense when you think about it, but this is the first I have seen it I think. Very nice shots! That does suck that they have to lock the gates. They keep them open in the winter though?

I had never seen a cannon on rails like that before either others have said the same that they have never seen it so maybe this was a local idea back in the day
It does make a lot of sense though

The park being closed had a positive if I want to visit there I get extra steps in from where I can park 😎

That is a good point about getting extra steps! I am glad I am not the only one who has never seen that before!

Love the cannons looking out to sea and out to the sunrise. Still vigilant after all these years. Interesting detail of the rear of the cannons on wheels to pivot in the direction of firing. Nice history tidbit also 👍

I think for me the best views of the cannons is with sunrise or sunset colors as a backdrop softens the harshness of the cannons

Nice canons! Haha
It's cool seeing them on the tracks. I've seen tracks like that before but they were always empty so I never knew what they were for. Pretty cool knowing their use now.

That’s cool you have seen the tracks before many have commented they have never seen them before

I've never seen a cannons, ever since lol. The beach is so calm. A peaceful view that can relax to anyone. Love that park but we don't have that one here in my place. Thanks for the tour.
