Cool details on a walk around the Historic District, downtown New Bedford

I took a walk around the historic district in downtown New Bedford last week and I shared some shots in my Wednesday walk post and this post kind of continues on from that with some things I spotted on that walk that caught my eye.

Starting with this clock on the Union Square office center, very similar from memory to a couple of similar ones I saw on my walks around NYC, clocks and lamps with the green patina always catch my eyes on walks

Then I came across this art piece outside the Hastings Keith Federal Building, which I fould quite interesting and got a few shots from different angles

Here is a shot also showing the building to give a sense of scale, or perhaps the first shot of it with the cars in the background does that better, I have seen on Farcebook it called various things, the octopus, the Urchin and I was intrigues what it was and who made it after some google searching I found out it is called

it is a sea flower. and created by James Surls, it was installed in front of the federal building in 1978 and was intended to be in keeping with the sea theme of the New England fishing community

I did not see the plaque for it when I took these shots, not sure if I missed seeing it or it sno longer there, but from online I found the plaque says

The sculpture’s lively organic form appears to float above the entry plaza...although monumental in size, the sculpture retains a delicate energy

Now I do find it pretty cool, but I am not sure I would call this sculpture delicate myself.

Now its been there since 1978, so some of you young folks reading this may think it is old, but please refrain from saying that and making me feel even older LOL

And to finish off a cool street lamp I came across

Are the lamps privately owned, or did the city just keep them, and restore rather than replace? They definitely look nicer than those made today.

A lot of old things look nicer than the so called modern things nowadays. Even the default icons on the computer. Nowadays the looks of the default icons are oversimplified, and they does not reflect much imagination. And this is true for many other things too.

True... And yet we are in an era of special effects which blur the line with reality!

I think some buildings kept the old lamps, there are modern ones around the city as well

I like the clock in the first photo and somehow the sculpture looks cool. I also wouldn't call it "delicate" because somehow on first sight it reminded me on an ancient weapon, a stick with pointy nails. It could also be a prehistoric animal...

I know the Japanese has a Kanabo, it is a spiked or studded two-handed war club used in feudal Japan by the samurai.

as for the sculpture I guess its the artists vision of a seaflower

Yes, the Kanabo looks quite similar, I have thought of a kind of Morning Star, but yes, it could also be an artistic version of a seaflower 😁

True, it's like the spinach dumplings my daughter cooked today - to a vegetarian they looked delicious, to a meat eater like me they looked more like the apples a vegetarian horse might let fall... they were delicious to be honest 😋

Btw, we call the horse droppings "Pferdeäpfel" what means "horse apples" 🤣

Pferdeäpfel

I have no idea how to write the pronounciation 😁

What a wonderful opening act! The historical value alone makes it such a nice entry. I love the patina on these outdoor pieces in New England (especially) that seem to cover the landscapes there. Probably because life began there in the cities of New England? So many weathervanes, clocks, roofs, and the like carry the patina like a badge of honor.

You make me want to move back home every time I look at your posts! So lovely!

When I looked at the culture, it wasn't until I saw it in its entirety, along with the building and wowsers! It looked huge and not at all delicate! If it were cut in half, it would look like a set of jacks that you play with on a sidewalk! :)

A wonderful post! Thank you!

I to live the patina found all around New England and am always watching out for it on my walks

Interesting to read people take on the sculpture

It's funny but you said the sea flower looked to be floating but that first one - the clock - i thought that one floated too! hehehehe

and I agree with you, I don't think that the sea flower is delicate at all. hehehe It looks beautiful and unique - but I think chunky describes it better than delicate! hehehehe

These were different than your usuals! I enjoyed them for a change of pace :)

(i've had this post open on my computer all day - and i'm finally getting to it JUST before midnight hahaha)

i'm so past my schedule today! LOL you'll be posting tomorrow's in just a few hours and i'm only chatting on todays! geeeeez hehehe

I like that clock! Tower clocks and building clocks are really awesome. And that sculpture in front of hte building is really neat. It may very well have been inspired by a rough trip to the bathroom, but really neat nonetheless.

Okay so we young people would not call it old because of you, instead we would call it an antique 🤣

It is an interesting looking sculpture if I may say so myself, very different.

Some really nice photos. And I agree with you, that artwork is surely cool, but I wouldn't exactly call it delicate either...

I like that clock in your first image!

I like the sea flower in front of the Federal Building. I just love abstract art. At first it looked like cigars. The fact that the color isn't a kaleidoscope and distracts from the building is nice. The art piece stands on its own even though it seems to blend in with the color of the building.

Thanks for sharing.

Take care, and have a good rest of your week.

I find it interesting hearing peoples thoughts on that sculpture so many different takes on it that is what makes art special

You know you're right about different interpretations. It all comes from a person's subjective point of view. The most profound example of this is when you give several people a photo and ask them to write a story based upon what they see in it.

The stories are an amazing array of imagination, partly based upon factual information located in the photo. But it's the feelings the photo gives to to the viewer that takes them off in numerous directions.

I appreciate you sharing all your interesting photos that give one pause and cause explore their meanings.
