Friday I walk out by Palmer Island

I walk out by Palmer Island

Good Morning, I hope your week is going well, and wishing you a good weekend ahead

With the Days longer and sunrise early, I am mostly going to spots a shot drive from home at the moment, as I like to get to the spot I go to around 45 Minutes before sunrise and with the sunrise at the moment at 5:10, and me generally up and about and ready to head out at around 4AM or a little after, means I head to spots no more than a 15 minute drive, which keeps me mostly around the New Bedford Area.

and one of the spots I head to now and again is the Hurricane Barrier wall and the Harbor walk built on top of it, and if I park at one end of it, I can also walk out by Palmer Island, which I did on the day I took these shots

Nestled in New Bedford Harbor, this 6-acre island holds centuries of coastal history.

Before it became a protector of the whaling fleet, it was known to the Indigenous Wampanoag people as Toshkowwong.

what draws some to this spot is its main claim to fame at the moment the Palmer Island Light, which was built in 1849 from rubblestone. For decades, it guided massive whaling ships home from grueling multi-year voyages.

It even survived the devastating 1938 Hurricane, though the keeper's house was tragically swept away.

Today, you can walk out to the island via the historic Hurricane Barrier at low tide to stand where keepers once stood

And here it is with some nice sunrise color as a backdrop

I thought since I mentioned the hurricane barrier, I should share this shot showing how you walk out beside the wall

and another view of the island, I must go back with my big birding lens sometime and try to catch some bird photos, as I saw and heard plenty on there the last time I walked there

Very nice shots 👍 like the oranges almost a pastel palette with the light blues. We've been sleeping with the windows open and the birds usually wake me around 4am. I thought they were supposed to wait for sun up lol they would be a good alarm clock for you.

What a pretty place for a sunrise! That first picture is gorgeous! I'm glad you're able to get out there early once again, it must feel great not being cooped up in the house like back in winter. That and those hospital stays that slowed you down... It's tough getting older isn't it?

I hope you have a great weekend!
