Some interesting properties around New Bedford MA

Good Morning, I hope your week is going well and that you have a good weekend ahead :)

Today I am sharing a few more interesting buildings I have seen on walks around the city here in New Bedford, MA.

Now sometimes, I may just pick a street that looks interesting driving by, find a spot to park, which often can be a challenge here and walk and see what catches my eye.

But since I have been sharing photos of historic buildings on Facebook, I often get suggestions to check out certain streets, and in some cases specific buildings that people have memories of.

And this post is kind of a mix of both, in that the first three photos are addresses people have asked me to get photos of, and the others from when I walked the areas near them and ones that caught my eye.

This first one is at 34 South 6th Street, and someone mentioned they had lived there and would love to see it, and looking it up, it is known as the Coffin house, after David Coffin, who operated a candleworks and a “tryhouse” where blubber was rendered into oil, and owned shares in whaling vessels

And this is another one people have asked me if I have seen, called by some the purple house for obvious reasons . it is on Walnut Street and was built in 1803

This one I happened to pass by when I was taking a walk on Hawthorn Street; it's an area close to the hospital, and many of these properties were and may still be owned by Doctors.

Now this one I went to as someone had mentioned it to me, but I just added it to my list of places to visit on maps without noting who asked me so at this stage I am not even sure where it was :)

And to finish off this post, this is the Rotch–Jones–Duff House and Garden Museum, it was buily in 1834
and designed by Richard Upjohn
Back in the day it was a whaling mansion and a documented site on the Underground Railroad

I really should have done a better job of taking some building photos on my last trip. I got a few, but nothing as nice as these!

Cool that you are helping people on Facebook with their memories of the area. We visited a place in Vermont that was the last stop on one of the branches of the Underground Railroad. It was owned by Quakers. Once freedom seekers got to Vermont, it was a quick trip to Canada or many just stuck around and worked because it was mostly safe from southern bounty hunters.
