Fort Phoenix is a former American Revolutionary War-era fort located at the entrance to the Fairhaven-New Bedford harbor, south of U.S. 6 in Fort Phoenix Park in Fairhaven, Massachusetts. The fort was originally built in 1775 without a name, and added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1972. Just off the fort, in Buzzards Bay, was the first naval engagement of the American Revolution, the Battle off Fairhaven on 14 May 1775

On 5–6 September 1778, the fort was destroyed by the British when they raided the harbor. A force under Major Israel Fearing drove off the British, both at the fort and when they attempted an attack on the town the next day. The fort was then renamed Fort Fearing.[4] In 1784 it was given the name "Fort Phoenix" after the mythical bird that rose from its own ashes.

Now when I put heavy metal in the title I was not talking about a rock concert but the cannons which are at the fort, which the rest of the shots in this post will focus on

From Wikipedia I found the following about the cannons
The fort currently has five iron cannons mounted on reproduction wooden carriages. The cannons are Model 1819 24-pounders. Their trunnions are marked, “W.F.” on one side and “1828” on the opposite side, indicating they were cast at the West Point Foundry in Cold Spring, New York, in the year 1828. They were installed at the fort sometime before the Civil War along with three similar guns which were later transferred out of the fort near the end of the war.

There is also a smaller cannon at the fort which was captured by the Continental Marines during the raid on Nassau in the Bahamas in 1776. This raid was the first amphibious landing on foreign soil by United States Marines. This gun has been in Fairhaven since about 1777 and one of those originally installed when the fort was built.

In recent years, two more cannons, mounted on field artillery carriages have been installed at the fort. Donated to the Town of Fairhaven by the New Bedford Whaling Museum, the barrels of the guns are thought to date to the War of 1812, but they have no direct connection to Fort Phoenix.

This Park is a great place to catch a sunset and I will no doubt visit there soon when it gets to cool for morning walks, but I do find this area with the cannons so interesting,

Those are fascinating. The war of 1812? I never actually thought there would be a cannon from that time around and in perfect condition.

These are massive cannons and they remind me on several pirate and war movies playing in the 19th century.

That's another nice and interesting post JJ, I hope you're having a great weekend 🌞

My pleasure JJ :)
I think I have seen a few cannons in the castles we have visited during the years but I can't remember how many there were.

That is a great place that you captured! I didn't know they didn't name it right away or at least that was known until the 70's. That is so unusual! I am not sure I have ever seen the cannons mounted on the wooden trailers, that in itself is awesome that they had the West Point Armoury make a copy in keeping with the times.

I have seen many forts overlooking the water, gone are the days when they take it by sea, yes? I can only imagine what it would have been like, back in the day, don't you?

What an amazing place you found. I can hardly wait to see some sunsets coming from there!!!

Very nice and interesting!
There are so many stories of how canons were used as protection against the invasion of intruders!
There are commemorative coins, the one that comes to mind is the Star-Spangled Banner commemorative!

I have read about this fort but never seen these cannons. I guess all old forts have such cannons set on their walls. Nice captures as usual. Thanks for adding to my knowledge.

@tattoodjay, I am very happy with history. Especially when it comes to archeology. I once lived with a history student. and that makes me very happy. History is the king of knowledge. Without history we are blind even though we are rich.

those are so impressive!!!! I love seeing things like this - i love the feel of the BOOM in my chest and on the ground when there are things like lightning and fireworks and explosions hehehe

i'm sure i wouldn't like THESE being fired unless i knew everyone was safe - but i do long for those kinds of displays - i wonder why! hehehehe

i think i'm just fascinated with power like that hehehehehe

very cool - and... sorry about the downvotes. i know you focus on the good and the future - but i really wish that people wouldn't downvote quality content. there are so many bad things to downvote. why hurt people who are helping the platform. it's heartbreaking. and why such a massive downvote but no explanation? hm. well. you still did well over all :) and that's awesome!

and you are loved! and that's MORE awesome :)

now stop relocating fingers.. and better yet, stop dislocating them! LOL and no more rock slopes. LOL

Yeah these are an impressive display aren’t they
I don’t know if they ever fire these ones it would be so cool to see wouldn’t it I mean just the bang and smoke no cannon balls lol

And about the downvotes as you say even after them the posts are doing real well so I just try not to think about them happens so often now I am used to them
This week well the last 6 days 3 times probably 4 tomorrow lol

And I know those doing it feel they have good reasoning and logic behind their actions and although I may view it a bit differently I am not going to worry about it anymore

Cheers

I guess they do. and as long as you're heart is in a good space, then let them just be in their own world hehehehe

its funny though - i bet if they were on the receiving end of them - they'd have a different perspective. lol

isn't that always the way? hehehe

ah well. water off a duck's back. quack quack. LOL
