Lighthouses in New Bedford

Lighthouses in New Bedford

Good Morning all may you all have a wonderful day

For today I thought I would share a few shots of a couple of the lighthouses we have here in New Bedford MA.
I do love lighthouses and New England has plenty of them we had planned when moving here to do a few trips and explore some of them around New England and visit a few places along the way, but with Covid being prevalent when we first moved here, and then some health issues for my wife, that hasn't come to be as yet, but maybe next year will be the year for that.

Let me start with the Lighthouse on Palmers Island, called quite logically the Palmers Island Light

A lighthouse was built on the northern point of the island for $1,951 by Charles M. Pierce, a mason. It was first lighted on August 30, 1849, by William Sherman (sometimes spelled Shearman), the keeper. The 24-foot tower was built of rubblestone, with wooden windows and floors.

For years the lighthouse and the island itself were sad victims of neglect and vandalism, but thanks to concerned citizens and officials of the city of New Bedford, the lighthouse is shining once again.

Beside the Lighthouse is a nest which Osprey use, one of the Osprey from that Nest often sits up on the lighthouse watching over the nest

Next up we have the Butler Flats Lighthouse

Butler Flats Light is a sparkplug lighthouse located in the outer harbor of New Bedford, Massachusetts, at the mouth of the Acushnet River. Built in 1898 by the United States Lighthouse Board, it is the only known caisson lighthouse designed by a marine architect. The light was added to the National Register of Historic Places as Butler Flats Light Station on June 15, 1987. Automated in 1978, it is now operated by the city as a private aid to navigation.
That said as you can see from these photos it is looking a bit run down

And to finish off this art on the side of a building close to the school my Granddaughter goes to

The marine lighthouse itself is already of considerable interest. Especially the ones like in your photos. Is there a picture of a night lighthouse?

This post definitely feels like home for me. We have a fair number of lighthouses around the Great Lakes. Some of them are pretty iconic. We even has some old ones that you can climb up and stand at the top of. Awesome shots!

Lighthouses are so picturesque. The last shot of Palmer and the sunrise shot of Butler Flats are my favorites.
