Mono Monday head in the clouds

Mono Monday head in the clouds

I know last Monday I said in my post I wasn't sure I would keep with sharing mono images each Monday but when I was looking at the clouds on my morning walk today ( today being a few days ago when you read this, I prepare a few posts in advance often) I was looking at the clouds and thinking about the colors but then I saw the drama in the clouds and wondered how they would look in mono and that's how this post came to be.
Starting with this shot taken while walking on the Harbor walk here in New Bedford, there were some nice colors, but the drama in the sky was overshadowed by the colors so I did this mono edit.

NOw I shar emy thought son each image, but I really am a great believer in the saying Beauty is in the eye of the beholder and I would love to hear your thought son any of the images, whether it be agreeing with me or having a completely different feeling about a particular image or images

And on another day I was at Jones beach in Dartmouth, this morning the colors of the sunrise were very subdued but I like the edgy feel of the clouds in this image

and this next shot is on the West Island State Reservation and beach in Fairhaven, when I first got there that day it was still pretty dark and when I saw this beach chair left on the beach I took this shot, for me these clouds are not dramatic but more kind of surreal and calming

Now here is a good example on how a mono edit can change the mood of the image, in colors this was a very shall I say gentle and warming scene, but when editing in mono and the shape and contrast in the clouds was highlighted making it a more pleasing image in my mind

And that’s all folks

That horizon with heavy clouds definitely looks cool in sepia. You're absolutely right that beauty is in the eye of the beholder; photography is an art with rules to be followed and broken when required. I don't know how many times I've looked at one of my own photos and liked five different versions of it.

Thanks, and funnily enough I have edited one photo in a few different style a while back enough to do a post just on that one photo and the different feel from different edits, not sure if I will ever post it, but maybe if I get desperate over winter I will !LOL

Those are some really great mono shots! Do you shoot them in color and then change them to mono in post processing or do you use the mono mode on your camera? Do you feel like they both give the same results or is one better than the other?

Thanks and these were all taken in Color, which I do all the time, I dont think I have ever shot in Black and white on my camera, I am not even sure how I would if I wanted to, but I think that would be shottign in a mode where the camera does some processing, so I shoot in Raw color and then pick which ones I want to do a mono edit on,
sometimes when I take the photo I already know it would make a cool mono shot or thinkk I know LOL

That makes sense! Thanks for the reply! I agree, the camera likely does some processing on its own.

Good Question, if you don't mind me jumping in, I do believe the results would be different, considering the fact the "on shot" effects will really pay attention to lights, but after edits may not really give in, probably just try to blend.

The one with a beach chair begs for a story :) ... Could I please use it sometime, giving you credit???

I love the contrast in all of them, well done :)

I love all of them, they speak differently as they are differently beautiful. Though the very first is eye catchy, I wonder if you may as well loved it much to place it first :)

I like the first shot almost most because of the drama in the sky and the sepia tone makes it really looking good in my eyes, but the long exposure with the beach chair is my favourite today: there's a long clean and empty beach and then there are footprints to a beach chair. This image makes curious and tells the best story today 👍😃

I had to wait for a computer screen for this. A phone just doesn't do it justice! I noticed that there are mostly low-lying clouds in these shots, but, they are not flat and subdued, but rather puffed up, blown to a wisp, or trying hard to be moody.

The mono offers up a lot of different contrasts, so I can really see the appeal for it. You really are working magic with those lenses and edits. I am always happy to be on the receiving end of them... well, your post, but, I get to look at it.

Thanks so much for sharing with us! Have a great day!

Gotta be the first one for me.... you know what it reminds me of?? hahahaha you know me - always saying what something reminds me of LOL

that movie - Close encounters of the third kind! LOL i don't know why - i saw it as a kid and I think there must have been a scene like this with a ship behind the clouds - with lights or something hahahaahahahah

It looks like something is going to come bursting out of the clouds for a terrestrial introduction!!!!!

hehehehe all kidding aside - i really do love that - how did you say it? the drama in the clouds - that's exactly what it is hehehehe

I may have my phone full of skies... everyday I scout for the drama above my head... :) Stormy skies and contrasted twilights... I often paint them afterwards. For any reason I love painting clouds and northern lights.
