Mono Monday New Bedford Historic District
Let me start with wishing everyone a Happy New Year
for this week I will share some shots from a walk around the Historic district here in downtown New Bedford
Let me start with a shot of this building that houses the Freestone City Grill

the building itself was built in 1870 by Caleb Hammond and Sons, Jonathan Beauvais purchased the building and added its signature longmeadow freestones & handcrafted mahogany interior.
The Citizens’ National Bank was there for a while but eventually moved on, and the building would be used for banking and warehousing before beginning its restaurant and bar career. First came the famed Haskell’s Cafe, complete with Go-Go Girls, in cages, then the Pequod Lounge. Kerry Mitchell and Debby Seguin purchased the Pequod Lounge in 1978, and opened Freestone’s Restaurant and Bar in 1979.

The New Bedford Custom House was authorized by Congress on July 3, 1832.
The site for the building was purchased on April 22, 1833 for the sum of $4,900, and the cost of the finished building was approximately $25,500.
I can only imagine what it would cost to buy the land and build something similar these day s It is a rectangular, two-story, white granite building with a hipped roof.
The façade is dominated by a three-bay wide portico comprised of four Greek Doric columns, which support a pediment. Pilasters are exhibited at each corner of the building. Historically, the New Bedford Custom House was where whaling masters registered their ships and cargo. It is symbolic of the era when New Bedford was a major port, and it adds architectural distinction to the New Bedford Historic District. Today's commercial fishing and cargo ships continue to log duties and tariffs here, as it still serves as the New Bedford office of the U.S. Customs Service. It was also the first post office in New Bedford and continues to function as such.

in 1832 Seamen’s Bethel was built Mariners’ Home in 1787
If you have read Moby Dick it was based around New Bedford and the Church referred to is this one
And of course when I am in this area I have to get at least one shot focusing on the cobblestone streets

Beautiful photos as always, and interesting history. We just to have those beautiful cobblestone streets to go along with the Illinois State Capitol built back in Abraham Lincoln time. But, alas, the city paved over them. Progress?? Bah!
I just heard from a local here, they did pave over them here at one stage but about 10 years later they redid them in some areas which I think is cool and keeps the historic feel of the area
Nice shots. I like the arches in the bricks on the Corson building. Fun when a beautiful building like the Customs House continues its role. Imagine being a small fisherman doing business there today, with the history of the whaling ships all around
