Murdered, but Never Forgotten – Holocaust Memorial

Murdered, but Never Forgotten – Holocaust Memorial

This post focuses on the Holocaust Memorial in Buttonwood Park, I have driven past it many a time and the hand reaching into the sky is so powerful it catches my eye every time I pass it, and I got a few shots of it on my walk around the park recently

It stands with a hand reaching towards the sky with the number “141282” sculpted into the arm.

The memorial is near the corner of Rockdale Avenue and Hawthorn Street, a stark reminder to the horrors taken place between the years 1939 and 1945. It was the dream of the late Abraham Landau, a Nazi concentration camp survivor, to see a statue erected in honor of the 6,000,000 Jews murdered. In 1998 his dream became a reality.

On the front of the statue is a list with the names of different concentration camps, with some very familiar, such as Auschwitz. On both sides of the list is an inscription, in both English and Hebrew: which states

In memory of the six million and millions of other victims slaughtered by the Nazis during the Holocaust of 1939-1945.

The young, the promising, the aged, our scholars, rabbis, leaders, mothers, fathers, brothers and sisters, entire families, an entire generation

Murdered, Murdered, Murdered

But Never Forgotten

Erected by the citizens of Greater New Bedford and friends
1998

Abraham Landau was imprisoned as a teenager from 1940 to 1945 in 13 different labor and concentration camps. Upon release, he, and his wife Freida, moved to New Bedford in 1950. During his lifetime in New Bedford, Landau opened a small tailor shop on Pleasant Street, became a cantor like he was taught in his native Poland, visited local schools and talked about his wartime experiences, and became an active member of the Holocaust Committee. Landau died in 2000,

The number on the statue “141282” is the same number was tattooed on Landau’s arm during the Holocaust

As I said earlier driving past this statue I found it very powerful, being right by it taking these photos it was even more so and I hope my photos do it justice

Very impactful, powerful, as you say. I feel it also represents all the downtrodden, and the fact that it is in a park, surrounded by greenery, reminds one of the peace and calm wished for by all who were wronged...

That's so true what you are saying, JJ, Murdered, but never forgotten.

It all has happened long time before most of us were born, my father was 6 years old when the war was over, all 4 of my grandfathers have been in the war (2 never came back and my grandmothers got married again).
Usually people tend to forget bad things as well as good things that happened in the past, but this should never be forgotten nor should it be denied - such memorials should remind our descendants that the Holocaust has happened.

I have only been to Mauthausen (spelled wrong on the memorial) but visiting such a place makes you think. To see it is different than to learn it at school.

A reminder on this Independence Day to never let your government become too powerful, and Never, Ever, Never let them take your weapons away!

We have something similar in my country and it's literally impossible not to get goosebumps while reading their stories. It's funny that we still believe that the reality we live is not good enough..

I wish I could see this park being actually there, but that's not possible. However, you have given a perfect idea. A mixture of beauty, greenery, and history.
