On Palmers Island

On Palmers Island

For todays post I am sharing a few Images I took on a walk around Palmers Island, I know I have shared many photos of the Lighthouse just off the Island, but here I go again with another shot of it, but this time taken from on the Island,

Located in the Acushnet River at the entrance to New Bedford Harbor, Palmers Island is a 6-acre island and is designated for walking and other passive recreational uses, such as bird watching.

A little on the history of the island

Pre-dating the Pilgrims’ arrival in Plymouth by 18 years, English explorer Bartholomew Gosnold first surveyed the 6-acre island during his exploration of New Bedford Harbor in 1602. The island was later named after William Palmer, an original settler of Old Dartmouth. The island was used as an internment camp for Native Americans during King Phillip’s War (1675-1676) and as a garrison during the Revolutionary War. A hotel and amusement park were built during the 19th century. During the 1938 Hurricane all the structures on the island were washed away with the exception of the lighthouse.

To get to this viewpoint looking over the island there is this path up the rocks

Its a short climb, but as you can see the rope fence to assist when going up the rocks isn't to sturdy, its a fairly easy climb however, well when it is dry, may be a bit slippery after rain if the rocks were wet

Another view from up at that viewpoint, the Hurricane barrier wall of to the left and New Bedford in the front

This is the part where the two Hurricane barrier walls meet, the one coming from New bedford and the Fairhaven one, the structure in the middle is for boats to pass and can be closed if a storm is approaching

Another shot of the passage for boats to head out through taken from a different point on the island to finish off this post

Yeah, that rope fence looks like a lawsuit waiting to happen! Beautiful shots though. I think you could take a picture of the lighthouse every day and no one would complain. When something is that photogenic, it is just to be expected!

even though I have bene here a long time now lawsuits never jump into my mind, but your right, next time i go there i must check perhaps there is a sign saying climb at your own risk

Thanks for the feedback and support ;)

I would almost bet there is some kind of sign. People don't leave anything to chance these days!

Good morning @tattoodjay !

Very nice place you have shared with us today!

Hard to believe that the sea can wipe out everything, but hurricanes are very destructive. I wouldn't want to be near one.

It seems unbelievable to break the serenity of the place that your photos convey.

I leave you a big hug

Nice little history blurb there. I am fascinated with early history of America. I lived in California for 20 years where history started in 1850 lol Lovely photos as always tattoodjay

A beautiful piece of real estate there, JJ! @tattoodjay I can just see an amusement park there. They are always fun on the water and the views! Nice scenery with the lighthouse, built to stand, yes!

Isn't that terrible? I was thinking the same thought of lawsuits, only because it would definitely be slippery when wet. At one time, I bet there was no chain to hang on to until somebody sued. (I could almost guarantee that) Nothing is changed until there is a reason.

Too bad because it really is quite beautiful there.

I bet you are right and there is a climb at your own risk but, do you know what I found out from my lawyer friends? It doesn't really matter with a disclaimer, people can still sue. How sad.

When I lived in Europe, I was appalled at the things that were allowed without handles or guardrails! :) When someone died in an accident that happened, it was just sad, but, nothing changed.

It was a wonderful post and I am enjoying each post about it! Thank you!

I do love this Island
Personally I like now that it is left natural

As fir lawsuits I guess there is pros and cons
I remember everyone telling me I was crazy when a car went through a red light and hit me dislocating me knee and cracking a couple of ribs and nit airing the driver I just never thought about it

Dear @tattoodjay, sorry to jump in a bit off topic but may I ask you to support the HiveSQL proposal?
It lost its funding recently and your help would be much appreciated to keep the HiveSQL service free for the Hive community.
You can do it on Peakd, Ecency, Hive.blog or using HiveSigner.

Thank you for your support!
