Sublime and Beautiful Sunday some animals at the ZOO

This post is for #SublimeSunday is inspired by @c0ff33a and #BeautifulSunday is initiated by @ace108.

For this weeks post I thought I would share a few more of the animals I saw at the Buttonwood Park zoo.
When I started writing this post, I had types this will be my last post from this visit tot he zoo, but then I remembered I did enjoy an indoor spot they had with birds, fish and jellyfish, which I have not looked at or edited so another post may well come later

This guy was relaxing and enjoying some sun

A little bit about the history of the ZOO

The Buttonwood Park Zoo is located on public parkland, part of the Buttonwood Park Historic District, and federally-designated on the National Register of Historic Places.

The zoo opened in 1894 as a deer park and menagerie. In 1995 it was in deplorable condition and closed in 1998. It reopened in 2000 after major renovations. It is home to a variety of North American wildlife and it supports many conservation programs, such as the Cape Cod Stranding Network.

The City of New Bedford owns and operates the zoo. The City of New Bedford funds staffing, operation, maintenance and capital improvements to facilities. Approximately $7,000,000 in Capital Improvement Program (CIP) bonds have been designated between 2014-2019 to update the facilities. Another $4,000,000 was funded by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts in 2018 for further improvements

In 1969, the Buttonwood Park Zoological Society (BPZS), a private, nonprofit corporation, was founded to run concessions such as a pony ride and train, and to fundraise for the zoo. In the past five years, BPZS has begun contributing more to the support of the zoo, managing the website, membership funding, and community events at the zoo.

The zoo closed in late 1998 for renovations. The zoo re-opened in August 2000.

Buttonwood Park Zoo was called "one of the finest small zoos in the United States" by the American Zoo and Aquarium Association in 2003

I have said in a previous post I thought the Zoo was looking run down on this visit, but thinking about it since then, yes it did look rundown, but I did notice many staff working there so maybe it is being brought back to good condition, and maybe not this year but I will revisit it sometime

They had a little enclosure with a few birds

Nice to see classic old attractions like small city zoos get some attention and remodelling. I recently visited a small town I lived in growing up and checked out the zoo. Unfortunately still looked the same as it did 30 years ago 🙁 Nice photos. I love otters. They are fun to watch when they are being playful.

You have a wonderful shot on this cute animal, especially on the otter swimming and to the seal.

Appreciating the wonder of nature.

Wonderful photos. The otters are adorable, however, I've never seen one in real life. 😊

One of the nice things about small zoos is that they are usually not crowded. The Philadelphia Zoo is always packed, but the nearby tiny Brandywine Zoo is always a fun walk.

It is great to have zoos! The animals which would not be otherwise seen on regular frequency or not viewed at all is available for us to marvel! And you take such wonderful photos!

Wow! that place is really rich with those different animals and you're so lucky @tattoodjay to look at them in person. Some of those animals, i can only see in pictures.

The otters in the zoo don't look big just like the ones I saw in our zoo.
The ones I saw in the wild looks bigger.
