Cool art around the city
One thing I love about New Bedford where i love is how the city embraces art, and there are so many art pieces around the city, some I had seen before and some I just discovered.
I thought I knew the Historic Disctrict here in NEw Bedford pretty well up until a couple of weeks ago, I was walking to a spot I had been before but must have walked a different route than I have before and I turned a corner, and thought WOW how have I missed thism I wondered iinitially if it was new, but it didnt have the new feel.
This is what I saw
This is the Frederick Douglass mural located on a wall in New Bedford, honoring the famous abolitionist who lived there.
The mural was completed in 2001 by artist Danny Devenney, depicting Douglass and other figures related to liberation struggles.
It is located at the corner of Sixth and Spring Streets

Now I guess one would call this industrial art, since it is encasing the elevator one can take to go from the bridge down to the level of the train station here in New Bedford which I recently visited.

I did not take the elevator for a couple of reasons, I had seen someone open the elevator just a little bit earlier and use it and there was someone sleeping inthe Elevator, I am guessing a homeless person and I did not want to bother them.
And secondly I avoid elevators when I can, having had a couple of bad experiences in them a couple of times, once gettign stuck, for maybe an hour or more till they could get it to open,
and another time an elevator I was in dropped about 1 and a half floors and again got stuck, that time they got me out pretty quick maybe 35 minutes, needless to say my colleagues at work, well a few of them refused to ever share an elevator with me.
and next we have Sears Court which is is a pedestrian alley connecting Purchase Street and Pleasant Street in downtown New Bedford, Massachusetts. Once a drab downtown throughway, it has transformed into a vibrant public art space featuring the colorful "In Motion" spray-painted mural and alphabet-magnet lettering on its overhead catwalk

This parking lot mural is located is also downtown.
The mural artwork includes a prominent "Tree of Knowledge" painted by artist Lydia Stein. Other sections of the wall feature local historical themes and community art and i am not sure who created those.

That first mural is really awesome. That's too bad about the guy in the elevator, but it seems that homeless people are everywhere these days which is so sad.
Yeah I loved that one, and yes, sadly, the number of homeless just keeps growing

Great post. Love the Frederick Douglass mural. I've watched serveral Civil War movies lately and he was featured as a voice that Lincoln listened to.
