6 MORE Things on Hive that weren't obvious - TDC Tunes is confused but working on it!

For my first list of things on Hive that weren't obvious, check out my previous post:
https://peakd.com/hive/@tdctunes/5-things-on-hive-that-werent-obvious

Confused a bit by Hive?? Me too! But I'm learning all the time - let's figure it out together! Let me know any tips you have, share helpful links you know or tell me things that aren't obvious to you and lets spread the knowledge!

TDC Tunes is confused but working on it!

Once again I'll divide the post into 2 parts - part 1 with 3 tips for your first week. And part 2 for some tips I picked up since then.

Having been on Hive about 4 months now, I'm particularly keen to try and capture some things that weren't obvious to me whilst they are still fresh...

Part 1 - First week on Hive

1. Be prepared for bugs and things not working.

This is the new frontier of the web, and sometimes things don’t work straight away or as you'd expect.

You'll benefit from being prepared to be a fair bit more patient than you might be on other platforms. It is worth that bit of extra patience (and maybe putting the kettle on before you continue)!

A couple of quick examples...

Example 1: Images

One example from my first week is images. Sometimes adding an image to your post/comment/D.Buzz doesn't seem to work or just takes ages...

Argghh!

This caused me a lot of confusion to start with but normally waiting a while sorts it out and it is in fact uploaded fine.

Example 2: Cursor jumping (bug or just TDC Tunes user error?)

I find as I'm writing that sometimes the @peakd interface will keep jumping my cursor to the end of the article. Very annoying! I'm not sure if it's a bug (perhaps specific to PeakD on Brave?) or if it's some key combination I keep accidentally hitting that does this. I haven't figured it out yet.

If it happens I make sure my draft is saved then I do a complete reload of the page and it normally sorts things out.

Again - things can be a bit more temperamental than we are used to on the web - but stick with it! I love @peakd and Hive and I feel lucky to have discovered it, minor quirks and all!

2. Some things are easy to do but are frowned on!

This sounds scary but don't let this put you off! Be brave to try things and if you make a 'mistake' someone will point it out.

Some examples include:

Upvoting your own posts.

Since monetary rewards are involved, self voting is viewed (extra) poorly.

Duplicating content.

I accidentally did this in my first week because I didn't realise posting something to both DTube and PeakD was effectively publishing it everywhere on Hive twice (see the first tip in my previous tips post!).

In my case, the super helpful @steevc politely pointed me in the right direction and has since become one of the people I interact with most on Hive!

Using tags in a way not intended.

Tags can do a lot more than help with finding stuff on Hive and often have functionality or value attached to them by communities, each with different intentions or rules.

I was lucky enough to receive great advice from @stickupboys when I started out - but I'm still learning about how tags are used all the time!

Again - I think it's ok to try things out, but be receptive and open to learning if you mistakenly use something in a way not intended.

3. Ask around for the information you need.

Though there are a few places with great info (some listed at the end of this post!) - I’ve found there often isn’t a single place with all the info you need on any one topic.

I’ve had to learn by talking to people and asking questions - things are moving very quickly and what you read can get out of date!

One community I've found really friendly and helpful is @hive.pizza - join their Discord and ask away and someone will usually point you in the right direction:

Part 2 - Tips for beyond your first week

A couple of quick tips to start with before diving into the bigger topic of getting money into Hive Engine...

1. 3Speak and .mov files

Using a Mac and frustrated that @threespeak doesn't allow you to upload a .mov file?

Don't worry!

Just rename the file to end in .mp4 instead of .mov and it works!

Simple!

2. Adding posts to your blog when they only appear in All Posts.

This confused me because if I wrote a blog post on PeakD it would appear in my 'Blog' but if I posted a video on @threespeak or a stream from @vimm it would appear (on PeakD anyway) in All Posts.

But usually when I post a video I will write a substantial amount as part of that post too, so want it to appear in my Blog. This is easily solved on PeakD - just find the post in All Posts, click the "..." and then "Add to Blog".

Sorted!

3. Getting money in and out of Hive Engine / Liquidity

If you've started to discover the whole universe of second layer tokens and their potential you may have already transferred some Hive to Hive Engine in order to purchase some tokens. This can be done in a few different places, the ones I've used being:

These allow you to swap Hive for SWAP.HIVE on Hive Engine, which you can then use to trade for other tokens.

A couple of things to watch out for though - Leodex and Beeswap charge 0.25% for a deposit and hive-engine.com charges 1% - so I definitely prefer the former two.

However, sometimes they don't have enough liquidity (meaning their SWAP.HIVE is temporarily exhausted) so it's worth checking this before you try to make a deposit.

For example, on Leodex you can check it in their wallet:
https://leofinance.io/@leodex/wallet
Select the big Hive Engine button at the bottom left and check the SWAP.HIVE balance. Right now there is only 5.7 SWAP.HIVE there so if I want to deposit more than 5.7 Hive, it's going to fail:

And here's the Beeswap interface which shows the available liquidity right there (and today there is plenty!):

Learn More

Once again these are just a small handul of things I didn't find obvious and there is still loads to learn!

Here's some places I've sound super helpful:

https://jryze.me/hive/
Goes into detail and explains the concepts and terminology behind Hive really well. There’s a lot of info, but you are probably going to need to get your head round all of this at some point if you want to be active/successful on Hive.

Some great posts here!

Some things to think about and do in your first week!

https://hive.blog/faq.html
Recently I've managed to fill in some really important gaps in my knowledge by reading the hive.blog FAQ - thoroughly recommended!

Finally

One of my motivations for writing up some of these was to have something to share with people I meet who are interested in Hive.

So I'm super grateful for links to any other great posts and links anyone might know about for new people in addition to the links above and as I said at the beginning - let's be confused together and then learn together!

It's awesome to see you diving into more of Hive than just hanging out for the music.
The more you get into it the deeper it gets and you realize its like its own universe in here.

I will see you around a lot more!

Indeed - there is some great music and musicians on Hive but Hive is a whole world of stuff - and lots to learn about and dig into!

Thanks for this! I’ve made many of the same mistakes and am still steadily working to learn all the ins and outs of blockchain living…this will help out a lot :)

Yeah exactly - I guess I realised at some point lately that everyone else is learning it too - even the people who have been around for much longer. And things change so there is always more to learn...

Well I learned something from that. I've not used the Add to blog option yet. Hive is confusing, but we can help each other. I decided to do a post of hints and have pinned it on my blog so I can keep updating it. I ought to link to other useful posts, like this one.

Ha - glad you got something from it @steevc - I was super pleased with myself when I discovered that Add to Blog option!

Ah I didn't see your post until now - sorry I missed it - I'll add it now to my list of useful links for learning Hive and will include a link to it in any future posts I do like this...

Here it is for anyone reading this - another super well written guide: https://peakd.com/hive/@steevc/a-guide-to-hive-from-my-experience

Thrilled that you found it useful! I'll keep trying to keep a note of anything else I learn/discover and if I get to 6 things again do another post...

Hope you have a great day!

I lead the way where confusion is concerned, i cannot work it out, but then again, i can't remember what i had for dinner..

I think with this post I'm starting to embrace the confusion! It's ok to be confused and we are all in it together!

Btw - what DID you have for dinner?

Fish pie and peas, ha, could tell from the washing up.

In my experience, self voting is not a problem when you have a small vote value. It's when you can give yourself a big upvote and you write posts just so you can give yourself a big upvote that the problems really start. They call that "abusing the reward pool". I only recently stoped upvoting my own posts, and the vote trail that I follow still upvotes some of my posts. I have that vote value set at 20%, so I'm not giving a very big vote to my post through the vote trail. That kind of self voting is kind of unavoidable, at least by any means that I'm aware of.
If you're new here, or have a small account, go ahead and upvote your own posts. When you're trying to grow your account out of tiny territory, every little bit helps.

Now that is interesting! A really good example of how things aren't necessarily hard and fast rules and that it's ok to try things.

Personally I don't see the need for me to self vote - though like you I think there are curation trails I'm following which might vote on my stuff so I might be in that same position where I indirectly do some of the time. I'll at least allow myself not to worry about that then!

Thanks so much for the advice!
