Dear Hive - please give me "Requests" for my Improvised Set tonight!

avatar

I'll be live doing my improvised set on Brixton Radio tonight, where I will be creating an hour of electronic music using a modular synth "wall".

This time though I would greatly appreciate YOUR input as I'm taking "Requests"!

TDC-Tunes-Brixton-Radio-Green-Flame.png

No - NOT song requests (it's not that kind of Radio Show!) but requests for:

Sound Design

Is there a type of sound you would like me to try to create on the modular synth?
Want me to make something super bassy and analogue?
Want me to make a cowbell?
Or how about a warbling trumpet?

Tempo

Want something slow and chilled to relax to? Or are you in a dancy mood?

Tell me a tempo and I'll try and do at least some of the set at that speed. Anything from 80bpm to 140bpm is in my usual range, but you can try me for anything!

Anything else?

Want me to work in a Lydian key or do a part of the show with just snare drums?

Set me a challenge!

Let me know your requests in the comments to THIS POST and I'll do my best!

NB: I've only opened up requests to people on Hive via this post! Let's see what you fine folks can come up with!

You can watch the show at 9pm UK time in any of these ways:

Preferred: Vimm - here on hive!
https://www.vimm.tv/c/tdctunes

NB: I will attempt to stream to Vimm - though it sometimes isn't working for me and during the show I'm unable to keep retrying as I need to focus on the music. I will always try and kick it off on Vimm at the beginning though as I really want to support @vimm and doing as much as possible on Hive!

Alternatively

Regardless - the stream will always be broadcast on my Twitch channel - and here's a clip from a previous show to give you an idea of what I do:
https://www.twitch.tv/videos/1200414801

See you at 9pm everyone! Looking forward to your kind crazy requests!

Hi TDCtunes, how about for a challenge tonight you could use some extreme square wave LFO at some point, however you see fit. Just make something go judder-judder-judder-judder for me 😍

Thanks for the request!

Here you go - some square wave modulation!

Of course, the possibilities are endless - I played with the obvious pulse width and filter cut off being modulated with a square wave but I also had a square wave modulating the "Model" of my Plaits module at one point (i.e. it would jump between too completely different synthesis modes!)

Thanks again for the input - super appreciated!

Brilliant mate! Love it. Quite the setup you've got there, and it looks even cooler in the dusky light with all the flashy-flashies :)

Ok you are gonna get a list from me of what I want in a tune.

  • 127bpm (ish, or slower)
  • Heavy techno bass drum
  • Nice clear piano for rhythm
  • Airy Synth lead
  • Clean Guitar swells
  • Couple hi hats

I know its a lot to ask, but I will be excited to see what you come up with.

(if you need another suggestion, I have a couple more!)

Can you add a really fat heavy kick and a snare with a good snap and some distortion on for me! !PIZZA

You always want distortion! (I'm just going to overdrive the whole mix...)

Thanks for the suggestion!

Super big thanks for the requests! Clean guitar and clear piano will require a bit of creative interpretation on the modular - but I'll see what I can do!!!

Btw: I have before done a set where I accompany the modular on piano - that requires moving my rig to a piano though so not this time but I may do that again for a show soon!

Thanks again for these requests!

  • Whole set was at 127bpm
  • Heavy bass drum was achieved with layering 2 kicks, and later in the set adding a 3rd!
  • I played some airy synth lead on my Prophet Rev 2
  • Always have a couple of hi hats!
  • I didn't really achieve clear piano for rythmn, but I'll give that a go on a set soon...
  • And here's some clean guitar (ish!):

haha nice.. i tuned in a little while i was at work and i was wondering what you'd try to do!

i had a system 1 keyboard and i liked it a lot, but i sold it to get the octatrack. i always thought the euro version was probably pretty cool

Ah yes! To be honest the 1M isn't amazingly useful within a modular rack as the patch points are pretty limited so mostly I use it as a single voice. (in the patch above I'm just feeding it an external envelope as I found the internal one to be very easy to get loud clicks with - for the kind of sounds I make anyway)

That being said I don't plan to sell it any time soon as it just has so many use cases - standalone synth, within Eurorack and then there are the plugout options - I really like the SH-2 one.

i scored mine when they were relatively cheap, i paid about $250. i just looked and they are going more for upper 300s on reverb.
i agree, the plugout options were cool, although i never bought a new one.

i would like to see that kind of thing more common in the future with hardware, as it's nice to get an upgrade option - even if you have to pay for it! that is one great thing about brands like elektron- they give you these amazing firmware updates over a decade later😎

i thought the synth made excellent "sparkly sounds" .....but the filter... wasnt necessarily as "fat" s i would have liked. another thing they should do more of,in my opinion, is an analog filter on a digital synth

Indeed re: updates. Unfortunately Roland didn't seem to develop do any more plugouts or develop them further after the initial set they made and instead moved everything new towards Roland Cloud (subscription based software synths).

If I was looking at a new hardware synth outside modular right now I would definitely look at Elektron - sounds like a great company,

lol cloud subscription🤢im not dowm with the subscription style model -not at all surprised. i love roland, classically, but they seem to make some weird decisions in recent years

Indeed - I'm not tempted by the cloud subscription either!

On the upside - the reason I have the SH-2 plugout/plugin is that when I needed some technical support with the software version of the 1M, the support engineer was super helpful and ended up 'conveniently' leaving me with an extra license for the SH-2 (though of course now I want a real SH-2!)

I do have a real SH101 btw - not in great condition and last time I tried it I couldn't get it to be in tune consistently - I may try it again soon.

Hey - thanks for the requests! Didn't quite reach me in time for last night's set (they are 9pm UK time, every Monday) - but I'm pretty sure I'll roll these requests into the next show!

Thanks again!
