Making the "Big Thingie" button and music with one note...

Highlight from my most recent set on Brixton Radio featuring:

  • Unpicking the "Big Thingie" button I made
  • Making music with a single note, Is this controversial? Is it music?

The "Big Thingie" is triggered by my new Ears module - which is a contact microphone. In this patch I've set it to trigger 3 different sounds:

  • Some white noise through an envelope
  • A pulse wave through an overdrive, a Wasp filter and an envelope to generate the main tone.
  • A second (digital) oscilator to generate overtones.
These sounds are then mixed together and put through a fairly big reverb. And all this means I can tap the Ears module whenever I feel the need for a "Big Thingie"!

You can also hear my other new module, Chimera playing the off beat percussion that is something like a shaker sound. You can hear it varying the level of the sound on different beats which is a built in feature and super useful for instantly creating a groove.

The main two voices you can hear are:

  • The relatviely simple bass notes, created from a set of Minmod modules - these are copies of the original Minimoog circuits - though in this case I'm only using a single oscilator.

  • All of the rest of it (the pitched bell like beepniess) is created with my trusty Basimilus Iteritus Alter (BIA) which features in most of my sets, It's being modulated heavily so it sounds like there is lots going on, even though it's only a single module.

Watch me live soon:

I'll be live again this coming monday from 9pm UK time on Brixton Radio. You can also watch on my Twitch or on VIMM - I'm tdctunes on both.

Taking requests!

And if you'd like to hear any particular type of sound or set me a sound desgin challenge for my show do drop a comment - I'll have a go at more or less anything!

Wazzup @tdctunes! Tomorrow I will definitely attend your Radio Show, I enjoy the sound of modular synths. The pitch immediately changed the sound and made it more dynamic or something. I've heard Moog sound a couple of times, a pretty rich synth.

Hey! Great! Come along 9pm UK time and join the chat! The modular can sound like all sorts of things but I do have a few favourite 'types' of sound that I use more often :)

I check the chat on Brixton Radio's Mixcloud and VIMM but the most chat can be found on Twitch where I'm: https://www.twitch.tv/tdctunes

Have a great day and 'see' you tomorrow!
