From Our IP Learners’ Homes to the Beautiful View of Mapanuepe Lake
There are days when teaching takes us beyond the four corners of the classroom. Some of the most meaningful experiences happen when we step into the communities where our learners live, see their surroundings, meet their families, and understand a little more about the life they experience every day—one of those memorable days happened after we visited the houses of our Indigenous Peoples (IP) learners. What started as a simple visit turned into a beautiful journey that eventually led us to a breathtaking view overlooking Mapanuepe Lake.

Visiting the homes of our IP learners is always a meaningful experience for me. As a teacher, I believe that knowing our learners means knowing more than their names, grades, and classroom behavior. We also need to understand where they come from, what their daily lives look like, and the environment that shapes their experiences. Reaching their homes may require patience, effort, and sometimes a long walk, but every step becomes worthwhile when we see the smiles of our learners and their families.
During our visit, we were able to see the simple yet meaningful lives of our learners in their community. Their homes may be far from the usual conveniences of town, but there is a special warmth in the way families welcome visitors. Conversations with parents and learners gave us a deeper appreciation of their daily struggles and simple joys. It reminded me that education is not only about what happens inside the classroom. It is also about building relationships with families and communities.

After visiting several of our learners' houses, we decided to continue our journey and eventually came to a viewdeck overlooking the magnificent Mapanuepe Lake. At first, it felt like an ordinary stop after a long day of visiting homes. But when we finally reached the view deck and saw the scenery in front of us, we realized that we had been given another beautiful gift that day.
The view was breathtaking. From above, Mapanuepe Lake looked peaceful and majestic, surrounded by mountains and greenery. The wide landscape seemed to invite us to stop for a while, breathe deeply, and appreciate the beauty of nature. After spending time walking around the community and visiting our learners' homes, the view felt like a perfect ending to our journey.

Standing there, I could not help but reflect on the connection between our learners and the environment around them. They grow up surrounded by mountains, trees, rivers, and natural landscapes that many people only get to see during special trips. Their community may be considered far-flung, but it is rich in natural beauty and culture. Seeing Mapanuepe Lake from the view deck reminded me that there is so much beauty beyond the places we usually see.
The experience also made me reflect on the meaning of being a teacher in an IP community. Sometimes, our work requires us to travel farther, walk longer, and go beyond what is convenient. Yet these challenges become meaningful when we understand that every effort brings us closer to our learners. Visiting their homes gives us a different perspective. We begin to understand why some learners may arrive tired, why attendance can sometimes be difficult, or why certain learning challenges are connected to circumstances beyond the classroom.
More importantly, the day reminded me to appreciate the simple moments. We did not need an elaborate trip or expensive destination to create a wonderful memory. A day spent visiting learners, talking with families, walking through the community, and eventually enjoying a magnificent view was already enough.

As I looked at Mapanuepe Lake, I felt grateful for the opportunity to experience such a beautiful place while doing something meaningful for my learners. The lake seemed to provide a quiet pause after a day filled with movement and conversations. It was a moment to breathe, reflect, and appreciate the journey.
That day became more than just a visit to our IP learners' homes. It became a reminder that teaching is a journey—one that takes us to places we never expected, introduces us to stories we might never otherwise hear, and allows us to discover beauty along the way.

From the humble homes of our learners to the breathtaking view of Mapanuepe Lake, the day was filled with lessons that no textbook could ever teach. It reminded me that sometimes, the most beautiful classroom is the world outside our school—and sometimes, after a long journey, all we need is a beautiful view to remind us why the journey is worth taking.
