What does digital skills means

Digital skills are can be defined as a compulsory skill required to be able to use digital devices, communication applications, and networks to access and manage information, from basic online searching and emailing to specialist programming and development.

Hence, digital skills enable people to communicate and collaborate, share digital resources, develop solutions to problems around the world.

Various examples of digital skills

Basic-level digital skills include:

  • Computer literacy
  • Data entry
  • Social media
  • Web-based communications and research
  • Word processing
  • Email and chat
  • Secure information processing

Advanced-level digital skills include:

  • Programming
  • Web Application Software Development
  • Mobile App development
  • Data Analysis
  • Digital business analysis
  • Digital marketing and content creation
  • Digital design and data visualization
  • Digital product management
  • Data science
  • UI / UX (User Interface & User experience design)

Why are digital skills important?

With the advancement of technology, it is no doubt that these new technologies can only to utilized or put into operation with the help of digital skills. Also, the pandemic really shows the world what technology is capable of and how it can greatly improve our way of life and the world at large.

Digital skills keep trending and growing across all industrial sectors for decades and presently whilst what the future of it would be is unprecedented. Now, digital skills adoption and the respective digital skills needed to embrace the transformation are critical to landing more secure, in-demand tech careers. In fact, those digital skills are important to human survival towards what advancement in technology brings.

Digital skills have not been more critical to business and also the workforce, as demonstrated by the universal shift to digital-first interactions like remote work, online commerce, and virtual collaboration. While this alteration has produced many benefits, like greater flexibility for workers and removing geography as a barrier to hiring new talent, it’s also resulted in the widening of an already-large skills gap.

What are the gaps relating to digital skills?

One of the major gaps in digital skills is that there are just not enough people with the right digital skills to power companies’ transformation now and in the future.

The need for digital skills is rapidly increasing but they are still a high percentage of people without digital skills, and the gap continues to widen due to the following factors:

  • Currently, the tech talent is outpacing in a short supply of digital skills and there are believes that technology will advance faster than workforce skills.

  • The increase in the cost of learning digital skills also affects the rate at which people learn digital skills.

  • Limited access to digital infrastructure and resources by socio-economic status

  • The gaps in digital skills are very disruptive to business and human growth.

The democratization of digital skills won't reach every country, industry, and community equally. Until people from underserved and underrepresented backgrounds get equal access to technology and education for re-skilling, the talents gap will still grow. Success, prosperity, and equality within the new digital-first world rely upon everyone having the talents to participate.

Developing digital skills for the future

The increase and advancement in technology also cause advancement in digital skills.

Years back, using email as a means of communication was a new concept, but as of now, it has become second nature for lots of people. Now we have modern technologies like blockchain, AI (Artificial Intelligence), and others that have gone from a very basic level to the mainstream. Influencing the market, businesses, and our daily lives.

Thanks for reading 😉.
