Sometimes Lessons Are Better Learned The Hardway.

Well Hello There Fellow Technicians And Hivers!


Something is definitely spurring in the air! We've gotten so many of the long awaited parts within this week, all in one week? Either somebody was fired or employed or things just started flowing better for no apparent reasons.


About two weeks ago I wrote a post about a certain yellow Volkswagen TSI. You can read all about it here The Underlying Truth. now in that post I mentioned a few things of abuse and all that, that's why I think the clutch failed in such an extreme manner, although at the end of the day it probably doesn't matter what we think a job needs doing. But sometimes, just sometimes what we think counts. We shall get to that later on, for now let's run through the assembly.


Now there's a few things that the client didn't want repaired or replaced. I wonder if they think that we are trying to upsale the whole quotation, probably right? Anyways, the fly-wheel isn't of such a bad condition but with a burnt clutch it's inevitable to not have small hot spots on it, hot spots causes a clutch to shudder so we prefer for these things to be replaced or skimmed. Heck I'm not even sure if you can skim a dual mass fly-wheel.

So fly-wheel was rejected and everything else along with opening the transmission and inspecting it, all we had to replace was the clutch. Nothing more nothing less.

And we should not dare upsale it. Okay.

I blasted my way through all of the clutch dust left inside the dual mass fly-wheel with some pressurized air and one might even say it's a brand as new... Jokes.

Something that I've learned the hard way was double check the parts before you fit them, especially a clutch. A few weeks back I installed a clutch that wasn't exactly the same but very close but that very close has a major affect change on the driving of the vehicle, well I was lucky that time around since the bolts didn't leave any marks so I was able to return it for a refund and switch it up with the correct one.

Now this is tricky since aftermarket parts do sometimes differ but there are ways to see if it's in-fact the same parts. We wont be diving into that now but if I can give a tip, double check, double check and double check.

We even received a whole clutch fork with the bundle, how nice.

Ahhh once again the simplicity of these vehicles are like no other, I know this might sound like boasting but I can legitly do one of these with my eyes closed now I know which bolts goes where... exactly which bolt and what the sizes are of those bolts as well. And I can do these consistently, that's either good or bad... the bad part meaning that we do ALOT of them.

Well she's fitted into place, this time it was done the right way. When I mean the right way I mean it was lined up with the fly-wheel and when the transmission is fitted it should slide right in without too much effort of having to shift it up and down and playing wiggle waggle.

A beauty indeed right?

People always say, "Nah installing a transmission is a two person job." Ironic I've always done it solo like a rolo, well there's always a helping hand if a struggle falls infront but 9/10 I fit them all by my lonesome. To be honest I prefer it above anything else, I like working the jack by myself while lining it up by myself, see the thing is I know what I want to do and having an extra pair of hands not knowing what your plans are, well it can be easily ruined.

Okay so let's put her back into her place! I'm sure she'll be more than happy to return! Can you believe we waited almost two weeks for clearance and the parts on this job.

Did you see that? It was fast right? Laughs okay jokes jokes! I had a little trouble getting her into place but when I jumped up it was a wiring loom that restricted it's movement from above, fear not an easy fix.

From here on it's basically working in reverse!

Now I won't be re-running through every little step since I did the tear down less than two weeks ago but I do want to point out something that I hate about these simplistic cars!

See that part I'm holding, well that's called a flange and nothing other than the CV flanges against it and bolts down with 6 tiring bolts, but wait that's not all it has to be removed for one to get the transmission out of place and well it has a little 6 ellen key bolt in the middle of it. Now removal is fine, it's the re-fitting that's the problem. Notice the insane thick spring on it? Well I have to press this in with one hand and tighten the bolt with the other hand! At-least have to let it catch some thread before I can tighten it with the wrench!

Although once it's gotten a thread or two it's easy going from there onwards! That doesn't make me hate it less though, they could have seriously used a pop out CV like every other car manufacturer out there on God's green earth BUT no!

Well I went the extra mile here, I wish I had a comparison photo but I don't I deleted all of them from the previous post but all the black covers were covered with dust, almost like the car has been sitting for a long time.

Cleaning them gave me quite the satisfaction I am not going to lie! Besides that when this client pops his hood he will be more than happy, at-least it will look like we actually did something.

On a different note we will have to remove the transmission again, either now or later on. Not sure what's going for what but since the vehicle had no clutch he probably tried forcing it into gear and it must have messed up the syncro's on the first gear, he didn't take the car when he came by today so I am assuming we will be opening a new job on it as well.

Only time will tell.
