The 6-Speed: Teardown Week!

IMG-20220820-WA0073.jpg

Well Hello There Fellow Technicians And Hivers!

Much The Same, Yet So Different!

Well here we have a 6 speed manual transmission that was pulled out of a Ford Ranger and brought to us by Ford themselves. Hmmm, I can bet you they didn't even drain the oil.

Now when I say "much the same and yet so different" I mean it in a very different way from what you'd think. "Much the same" meaning they break equally enough, you know between the manuals and the automatics, they all break. Ford probably hasn't noticed the problems on their transmissions or perhaps they don't want to acknowledge them at all. Where there is money to be made why fix it? Just find a cure!
The "Yet so different" part, well the 6 speed auto and the 6 speed manual doesn't at all look the same. Which is obvious isn't it.

It's Not Luck, It's Experience!

This is something I know!

This still tends to baffle me though, how can any technician working for a workshop or franchise not drain the oil out of anything they remove, I don't see why.

Fortunately our tearing down bays are equipped with the proper tables to tear down these gear grinding machines!

Look at it bleed!!!

DangIt, This One Is Broken!

Well this isn't at all a surprise, really its not! Most of these Fords that I open up look much the same! Oh and the automatics, dear lord you don't want to see those!
What we started doing with the automatics was to add a secondary magnet, just to catch more of the metal when it starts eating at it!

Although, with the manuals, the manuals has a little slot that the magnet slides into and adding another magnet might lead to some big failure!

There We Go Cranky One.

Honestly, out of all the usual things we get this must be my least favourite transmission to do a tear down on. Okay it's a little better since I've done more of them but they can be confusing sometimes and all because of there being the 5-speed and 6-speed builds. Both has different ways of tearing them down and sometimes I tend to mix the methods up a little bit but I don't think that'll happen a lot anymore though.

I have a 5-speed that I need to tear down soon so you might be seeing it tomorrow or on the Monday!

Just An Extra.

Sooo, There's not really anything specific that I wanted to say with this photo, other than the fact that I think it looks pretty darn cool! Doesn't it?

Well here ya go! I am signing off for the week and switching into weekend mode as of now!

Have a absolutely amazing weekend guys and gals!
