The Classy Problem Requires Authentique Fixes

Well Hello There Fellow Hivers And Technicians

We've got one of those fancy cars again, okay well it might not be that fancy but it's worth the while to mention that it's an Audi S4 that is supercharged. Boy oh boy this thing pulls like a beast, the rapid acceleration on it is beyond measure.

Yes I know there are far more powerful and wilder cars. But this is stock standard as it was made in the factory for public road use.

This specific one is a bit on the ugly side if you look at the cosmetics, however this is by far the one with the most healthy of motors. We even had an RS5 here that didn't pull anything like this S4, it's safe to say the the RS5 is and was a little bit sick eyy.

If I were in the market to buy a new car I'd definitely aim for this one or for one of those Q5's.

The dealio behind this car was a bit different than the rest, we wanted it done perfectly and right!

The client brought the vehicle in and said that the car has been from one place to the next and no one can fix it, well I'd assume they all just wanted to replace the oil and filter and hope it would run fine, and it probably did.

For a mile or two.

As one would be took out the transmission, a beastly thing, sheez I wish I had a photo now. The only visible problem we could see was that one of the clutch packs was burnt, but it was burnt properly. Even the metal casings in which these clutches house were burnt. However it was a very easy fix to be honest. From their on we fitted the new clutch rebuilt the transmission and refitted it back to the vehicle, but the work wasn't done yet, it might still have some valve body problems. With a burnt clutch and oil passing through the transmission carrying that burnt and ripped loose material through out and through everything in the transmission.

Naturally this means it needs a cleansing and a good one!

After the fitting procedure we then test drove it and noticed that it had a little bump when shifting from second to third and from third back to second also when selecting the reverse gear it also had a little jerk, now most would take that as a "It should probably feel like that" convincing themselves that everything is fine, and well who can blame them, this is for sure a pricey vehicle and pricey to fix as well.

Removing one of these valve bodies is and always be an oily mess, I should actually show you my techniques in directing the oil droplets into a bucket that keeps dripping while the sump is removed.

With that said there are also quite a few things to remove before pulling the valve body out, such as the oil feed pipes and the harness. It is relatively easy but I wonder how many people have struggle before not knowing what to remove.

And she's out and I had to go wash my arms because of oil three times, see the problem is when working with the car above your head, (It's always above your head when you work underneath it) well the oil drips onto your hand and from there on they creep slowly down your arms. It's annoying sometimes to say the least.

What's even more annoying is when you try to peek in somewhere the oil will literally drop onto your eye ball.

Say hello to that blurred vision.

Anyways enough with the joking, so this would be the very first time that I would be replacing all of the electrics on such a valve body, usually it's just one or two things here and there that needs replacing. But this customer wanted the full set of electronics replaced.

Who can blame him? I'd want the ride to be perfect as well.

This is the first time in ages that I truely felt like a kid and I mean truely!

When the bossman brought the kit to me and said I need to fit these on the valve bodies I was jumping with joy, I even told the bossman "Shit I even feel excited to do this!"

It's one of those "Ahhhh it's a lovely day" moments and boy it was! Well except for the heat, the heat is super crappy!

So here it the kit, packed nicely into a somewhat solid plastic container wrapped in a anti static bag.

Oh I had to wear a anti static band as well! I swear it felt like I was some damn mechanical surgeon!

I did say that we would be replacing all of the electronics on the valve bodies but this doesn't include all of the solenoids, well we bought the complete kit but there were three components that wasn't included in the bundle, I do wonder why.

Perhaps so that the valve body can be replaced eventually, and well that would mean a few dollars out of the pocket for the payer!

We replaced the two solenoids controlling the clutch packs namely K1 and K2 and then the pressure solenoid. These are the components on which my fingers are placed (Top and right are the clutch pack solenoids and the bottom one is the pressure solenoid.)

IMG_20230118_111423.jpg

With the new parts fitted I just had to use all the new insulators on the solenoids, it's almost as if this is an upgraded kit because the insulators seem to be covering more and are also a little bit thicker.

IMG_20230118_112534.jpg

Along with the solenoids we also replaced the electronic boards on the valve body, (Not the computer) I am assuming the boards we replaced are only functioning as connectors to let the electricity travel to the various components, they don't have any controlling power if I can say it like that. Etc the computer still does all the shifting and calculations.

Well for those who are keen on seeing where that beauty sleeps, this is the underbelly of that beastly transmission!

Refitting the valve body is also a bit tricky, as you can see there are plenty of pipes and links that needs to hook up. Especially those pesky gear selectors, you have to set them out 32 mm or 38 mm depending on what model you are working on.

Notice how clean the automatics transmissions are inside!

I love it

Nice article, especially when you say that "flushing" the transmission is best, before putting in new oil.
Many users don't understand the importance of doing things right: if you spend a little extra money on regular maintenance, you avoid breakage!

Thats right, people try to save a few bucks by neglecting on important stuff and end up having to pay alot more than they would have initially!!

Thanks for the comment 😎
