"OUIJA: Origin of Evil" -- Glad I Watched It [WARNING: May contain minor spoilers]

As I'eve mentioned in my previous post, the prequel of the movie Ouija (2014) which was released two years later was so much better than its predecessor. And by watching this movie, you can somehow appreciate the connection between the two films.

To be honest, I was quite skeptical whether to watch this movie or not because the first one was quite bland although I was able to survive watching it. haha However, I decided to go through with the film and guess what? I'm glad I did! ^^

Now, let me tell you a little bit about the movie.

In the previous movie, they gave us a glimpse of what happened in the past which brought about the series of mishap in the present time. And this point of the film made me interested in checking out this second film, hoping that it would be better.

As the title suggests, this is when and where everything started.

Late in the 1960s, a widower named Alice Zander lived together with her daughters Lina and Doris. She works a spiritual medium with her daughters as assistants in order to make ends meet. To put it bluntly, she was a fraud but tries to rationalize her job as helping people by telling them what they wanted to hear.

Lina, the older daughter, once suggested her to include Ouija board as part of their act. Alice then agreed and bought a board they could use.

Doris, the younger daughter, tried out the board with the hopes of having a connection between her and her late father. She started hearing voices and she believed one of those voices belonged to her father.

One day, they received a notice from the bank which means they'll need money to save their house. The little girl, wanting to help her family, used the board again to talk to her "father" and asked for help. She was then lead to the basement where she found a pouch full of cash. When asked by her mother, she answered that her father gave it to them.

Though doubtful at first, Alice ended up believing that her daughter is gifted and it was indeed her late husband who helped them. They continued their "job" as a spiritual medium with Doris as the center. And this was when everything became eerily strange.

The movie was actually good overall. The setting of the movie really gave you the "retro feel" from those days, including the fashion style. Lina's fashion sense was so cute!

The jump scares were effective, but more than the shocked and scared expression viewers can have, I like how creepily disturbed it made me feel. The young actress playing Doris was so amazing. There was a point in the movie when she was innocently talking to Lina's boyfriend, but she lines coming out from her mouth were so bizarre you'd like to actually run away from her.

And as I've mentioned, the connection between this movie and its predecessor made me understand and somehow appreciate the first movie. Origin of Evil is still way better, though.

I'm dropping the trailer here for you guys to check.

Ohh... when I watched this movie, I was shocked to see some familiar faces and it made me excited. And when I finally saw who the director was (I only saw it in the credits.. lol), it made me say... ahh, that's why. hahah xD

Well, I can't say it's my favorite movie, but I enjoyed it. If you haven't watched the first film, it's okay. But if you're curious, you can try. But if you watched the first film, got disappointed and decided not to watch this, it's a waste. This film is so much better! (Well, at least for me.. haha)

I'll end my review here. Thanks for checking this post out! Let's watch more movies in the days to come. (^^,)/

Ih yeah. Flanagan before he became the prestige director he is now hahaha.
You're looking at Flanagan's entire filmography ! XD

Since you're watching quite a bit of horror genre, I'll recommend you look for an indie film called The Stylist. I think you might like it. I did a review a while ago

I've watched HUSH before and actually liked it. Didn't really care about the director or actors back then.. hahaha

Thank you! I'll try to find it and watch. I rarely watch movies aside from horror, psychological thrillers and animated films. 😅😅😅
