Snowflakes and Smirks

I was half asleep when I heard something hit my window. I wished it wasn't my neighbor's cat again as it had the habit of being to my window every morning to disrupt my sleep. It was worse than my alarm. Strangely, this time, the noise came once. This was unlike the silly cat who'd hit and hit till I opened the window and it'd wag its tail and cat-stride away.

I slid into my new comfy crochet footwear. It felt so good warming up my feet. It was surprisingly so cold, unlike the temperature it was at when I went to bed. I pushed the curtains aside and was met with the most beautiful view ever.

The air was crispy, nature had gone into its restful phase. I gasped and pushed the window open to inhale the cold air, beneath my window stood a white dove with a note in its beak. It flew in, dropped the note on my bed and flew back out. "I never knew Dove's were this smart, thought it was just another contrived opinion of writers." I felt bad I kept the white bird waiting so long to deliver its message.

I picked up the note and shuffled back to the window. Whoever sent this, sent it just at the right time. "Would you be the Snowflake to my Winter?" I read out loud, my cheeks completely flushed, I ran my hand through my hair and looked in the direction the bird went.

"Oh my gosh!" He's been watching me the whole time. I scooted behind the curtains to contain the embarrassment. I hadn't even washed my morning face. I looked at my nighties, my hair; "arrgh" I exclaimed and sneaked a peek. There he was, smiling. He gave off the expression that he loved what he saw. "I am a natural afterall" I convinced myself and braced up to say hello. I waved and he signaled that I came over. His house was a few blocks away, a duplex, owned by him.

It was the best season indeed. Waking up to seeing everywhere covered in white blankety and having Richard woo me with words was the best way to begin the season.

"Siri, play me Love Me Like You Do by Ellie Goulding." I announced as I swayed to the bathroom. As the suds got rinsed off my body, I thought of what I was going to wear, biting my lower lips in the process. "What a great day." Excitement was written all over me as I stepped out of the shower, my towel wrapped around me. The bathroom was filled with vapor as the water was warm and nice.

"What are we celebrating today, Ellen?" Siri inquired and a smile curved on my lips. I paused and thought long and hard. "You wouldn't understand because you are just a voice-activated virtual assistant" I sighed. Siri gave back no response, but she gave me the most hilarious comeback by playing me "Someone Like You" by Adele. Siri is the best virtual assistant with good humor.

I took my time to dress up; a soft, oversized knit sweater, paired with snug, high-waisted jeans and knee-high boots. A woolen scarf wrapped gently around my neck, and a beanie with a playful pom-pom sitting atop my head. For the finishing, I used a good amount of lipgloss and a combination of two perfumes that gave off this fruity smell. Smelling like fruit in frosty weather was the deal. "Bye Siri." "Have fun," she returned and shut down. I grabbed a bottle of wine from my fridge and set out to meet the man of my dreams.

The snow crunched under my feet with each step I took. I loved the sound and I told quicker steps for a perfect rhythm. That's totally forged. I took quicker steps to get to his place faster.

Finally, I was at his door, it was decorated with a wreath. It looked lovely. I inhaled and reached for the doorbell but the door sprang open before my fingers got to the bell. There he was standing tall, right in front of me. His bronze skin tone, completely charming me. He had this navy blue relaxed-fit on, complemented with a white shirt, the buttons weren't done, his hair was wet… he was giving off a timeless look and I was totally in love with it.

"Compliments of the season." He broke the awkward silence between us. His deep voice almost made my legs wobble. I nodded sheepishly, handed him the wine and hurried inside. The fireplace was lit; the crackling flames danced within the hearth, casting a gentle light and flickering shadows on the surrounding walls. The house seemed more beautiful than the last few times I visited.

"I love the changes," I whispered, stealing a glance at him. He was looking for something in the fridge, so he looked over his shoulder at me and smirked. I wanted to hide my face. The butterflies in my stomach really needed to be spat out immediately else I was going to blush till I fainted.

"I am making breakfast, gimme a minute. Please get comfortable." He spoke as if it was my first time at his place. "Can I come help?" "Nope!" He responded immediately and smirked. I was loving those smirks and wanted to see more of them.

In a few heart beats he was done. Richard and I had been friends for three months, I liked him but never thought he liked me back until I got the note from the birdie.

I helped him set up the table and we ate in awkward silence stealing glances at each other with eyes that gleamed. When we were done, we sat next to each other on his loveseat talking about random things, people and work.

Suddenly, he filled the space that existed between us. "You smell fruity and I like fruits." His nose was almost bracing my neck but those breaths he planted as he spoke, made me shiver. He moved his head back, looked me in the eyes and smirked. I was losing it. I wished he wasn't always smirking like this with every girl, I wanted those smirks for me and me alone. It was one of the things he did that made my heart jump.

I reached for a button on his shirt, feigning to help him do it. He looked down at my hands and took them in his. "I was thinking…" He paused for a while, my heart was racing and I almost cursed it for that. "I'm thinking it's time we put the official label on us. What do you say?" He was polite and very sweet. I bit the lower part of my lips and nodded, burying my face in his chest then his doorbell rang.

I was upset when she walked in. I have never met her but with the way she looked at him, her broad smile, gave off that she liked him. But, my attention wasn't really on her but him. I wanted to see if he was going to give her that smirk he gave me. He didn't, rather he introduced us. He told her I was his girlfriend. I saw the frown, I felt the anger in her tone when she spoke to me. My heart swam as he kissed me. For the first time, we kissed. Right in front of her. When we were done, she was nowhere around. She had found the door. He smiled silly. My kind of man indeed.

What a beautiful and heartwarming winter story! You sprinkle emotions and surprises that are typical of a budding romance. Ellen is brave and it's sweet that Richard acknowledges her as his girlfriend before the unexpected visitor. Three's a crowd so I'm glad the girl left. Beautifully written. !LUV
