Gimme Field Work over an office any day

I have worked all over the world and been lucky enough to have worked in head offices in such cities as London, Madrid and Paris but to name a few.

Each of these were whilst working in the oil and gas industry.

Sometimes it was for existing projects that were up and running, sometimes for equipment being built and sometimes during the design phase.

Whenever we had field work or remote assignments, people always looked to yours truly...

I much prefer not working at a desk in a head office. Being a lemming working in an office, behaving like a sheep, married, mortgage 2.4 kids and a 0.75 of a dog was not the life for me.

People would often call me a maverick. I remember studying for exams, I would have no problems sitting out in the park with a pint of beer pretending to study. No need to be sitting a desk for me!

I think the advent of the the laptop started the trend in being able to work in different places.

The contraints of a desktop computer and oh god now I remember, great big monitors.

There was no way you could pick up a great big chunky monitor and put in your pocket...

So yeah smaller computers certainly helped locations for different work sites.

Covid and the Pandemic

The Corona virus (Covid) outbreak and pandemic has changed things for a great many people.

If you could work away from your work office then you were given the opportunity to do so!

Again we come back to technology. Now we have so many apps such as zoom where we can have digital meetings with umpteen people simultaneously.

Of course there are pros and cons with this remote working.

Throughout my career I have been a mentor to umpteen engineers, but working remotely away from other people does make that much harder.

Additionally people who tend not to be productive in an office environment have even more excuses at home to be lazy bastards.

The advent of advances in tech and AI means there are so many types of home gigs that can be done from anywhere.

This week for example I have been bombarded with work from client which is all about grading voice to text AI generated work.

As good as it is getting it is not 100%.

An error is still not perfection and some clients pay for perfection, so us humans are not dead yet!

Summer is coming, and so I am looking forward to getting my laptop and headphones and working outside!

You let the cat out of the bag there with working from home. At least people can pretend to work without having to cover their screen in case someone walks by.

I actually prefer to be in my office. Field work usually means I am crawling on the floor or playing around in drop ceiling and I am just getting too old for that stuff!

Depends how young and energetic we are for the field work. I prefer fieldwork because it provides us to move and meet interesting people.

Ai is becoming pretty handy now.

Working from home cuts a lot of company and individual cost. The only challenge can be attributed to laziness. Nevertheless, the covid era showed more advantage of this working system. Thanks for the update.

I'm with you there! Working out of home is great! I was office bound for years, just part of the profession but not anymore!
