A whirlwind start to the year

"Throw caution to the wind and just do it."

Carrie Underwood

We say that it's blowing a hoolie in Scotland when it is windy, and in parts of Scotland it blows a hoolie all the fluffing time!

I remember when I worked up at Sullom Voe Oil Terminal in the Shetland Islands way up North of the mainland of Scotland, it was a windy. It was so windy that the only trees that managed to grow were all bent over, and all cars had dings from the doors being blown open in the wind!

Do you have wheelie bins?

I was walking down my road to the shops earlier. It is all downhill and goes past the football ground.

And yes it had been blowing a hoolie earlier.

The blue bins that you see are wheelie bins, and we put rubbish or trash in them.

For some reason, the blue bins which are thin are general waste, and being thinner they have a tendancy to blow over!

We do recycle here, and have black bins for cardboard and these are thicker bins. Green bins which are thicker too are used for metals and plastics.

Result is often these bins get blown over, especially as some people leave them on the pavements, and don't even put them on their property.

When you are walking it can be infuriating with your path being blocked by these bins, it is a bit like dog shite on the pavement, my peeve is not with the bins or the shite, oh no, but with the people that own said bins or dogs that do poop.

So yes, I have been known to hurl a bin back into a garden and decapitate a flower or three.

Leaving a bin on the public pavement for days on end is not only a safety hazard and a nuisance but breaking the law, so curmudgeon me takes great delight in whirling the bin back where it belongs!

So I mentioned in the title that it has been a whirlwind start to the year, and here we are halfway through January already!

image.png

Do you see the blue sky in that picture, compared to the grey sky in the previous one, they were taken about two minutes apart, with the latter picture taken as I moved down the hill towards the shops.

Wait five minutes and a different weather pattern emerges.

Things have gotten hectic and it seems it will be a busy time, and in hive I have some projects lined up for the show. It's a whirlwind already!

Thanks for visiting and have a great weekend

Good luck out there man as you treck the trecherous wheelie bin stricken walkways, you do right lobbing them back into gardens haha

It's been brutal over here too with the storm, luckily though, it hasn't been too crazy.

When I saw "whirlwind" I thought about how things have been this week. I enjoyed the first week of 2023. It seemed like we all eased into the year a bit. Which was fine by me. This week everyone is making up for lost time. I know I'm experiencing back to back to back meetings day after day after day this week. I've heard from my peers that they are having the same experience. Let's hope next week is balance

Seems whirlwind is an apt description for the start to my year, too. Thankfully, it looks like settling into a calmer rhythm which is a relief.

I hate wheelie bins, too. With the heat, here, we end up freezing some of our waste to avoid getting maggots. They are the most unhygienic, unsightly...oh and the criminal element steal them and use them to stash and transport their haul...

Happy Friday 😊

Aah, those bins lying over the path like that make not only you mad but me too so I don't blame you if you make them whirl where they belong, lol!

I imagine you have a busy start of the year, Tito Ed with all your projects but I believe you got them💪

Do you know what is worse than a bin in the middle of the sidewalk, people leaving garbage bags. But I get you, and it is very disgusting, but please the curmudgeon you ;) can be nice to the flowers next time, please? hehe.

A whirlwind start, yep ;) and I am happy you have a line of projects for the show, Superstar 🌀

Happy Friday, Super Ed!

We have wheelie bins yes. Ours look like they are a bit bigger than yours though. We have one for garbage and another for recycling. They come on different days, but it isn't uncommon to see them strewn all about on windy days. On top of that the truck that picks them up isn't always too careful about how they set them down!

It wasnt too bad over the water in Edinburgh - a little bit windy, but not enough to blow the bins over. However, I'm used to Thurso wind, which is only about one notch down from Shetland, and it never gets close to being that windy in Edinburgh !

Living at the coastline (and the weather that comes with it) I feel your pain. 😟
FYI: Here's a bit of Germany for you: Over here blue is for paper and cardboard while black is for general trash (yellow for recyclable and green/brown for organics)
