What does HBD get you and is it the hottest stablecoin in the Block right now?

avatar

Hello Hello and welcome to this post about HBD!

First of all, some of you reading this may well be thinking what the heck is HBD.

Great question and HBD stands for Hive Backed Dollar. HBD is the stable coin for the HIVE blockchain and it has mechanics in place to keep it pegged more or less at $1US.

With the collapse of the TerraUSD stable coin and its sister currency Luna in recent days, the spotlight is firmly focused on stable coins and cryptocurrency again. Regulators will be rubbing their hands and getting ready with regulations surprise surprise!

In the background we have our HBD which is trading currently at 1.009 USD HBD Market Value by coingecko

This is excellent news and we can see that the HBD is behaving like a stable coin is virtually pegged at bang on one dollar.

Now I live in Scotland in the UK and 1 HBD = 1.009 USD = 0.82 GBP

Yes that is right 1 HBD gives us eight-two pence in the UK, what can you get for that, well maybe a sweetie if you are lucky! Actually, you can get five bananas, well that is much healthier than sweeties right?

image.png

So just what does HBD buy you in the UK?
This post will answer the questions posed in this post Leo Challenge: The real value of HBD from @leogrowth

I just went online to my local supermarket and saw that a packet of 20 Marlboro cigarettes costs £13 ! Yes thirteen pounds or almost 16 HBD for a pack of cigarettes!

Well holy smokes, at that price they really are HOLY SMOKES!

So part of the challenge was to see what 10 HBD would buy in our local country, well the answer is not even a packet of globally known cigarettes.

Do you drive? I sold my car at the start of the pandemic and either walk everywhere now or use public transport, it is much cheaper and better for the environment, although I do go through more shoes!

image.png

This is my local supermarket which is a seven minute walk away downhill (coming home is uphill and ten minutes walk with my messages, hey I am no spring chicken anymore, so enough with the sniggering in the back row thank you very much!)

Their petrol or do you say gasoline is more or less 2 HBD for one liter of unleaded. I imagine that is higher than you pay?

I will stick with supermarkets for the moment. Do you have discounts or whoopsies in your country? At the end of the day, places here will mark down goods if they have not sold. Sometimes I will shop at Morrisons at around seven pm (they close at ten pm), if I am lucky I can hit a few bargains on fresh produce, pies and sausage rolls can be marked down from £2 to £0.50 which is a pretty damn good deal. However, I usually miss this, and when I am there, I see the cultures waiting to pounce and elbow people out of the way.

People can be rude so and so's!

In the UK we do have a range of supermarkets with Waitrose taking the high end of the market, Asda Tesco and Morrisons taking the middle road and then the German budget supermarkets of Aldi and Lidl.

I remember a few years before I left to live in Spain, Aldi and Lidl were pretty crap in more ways than one. Now if you are prepared to have non designer food labels you will get some cracking deals on food.

image.png

We have an Aldi close to our train station, which is about a 13 minute walk, so come with me as I had a wee shop on Saturday.

Here is some Scottishspeak for you ... When we want to go and get groceries from a supermarket or a shop, we say we are going to get some messages!

So let's go and get some messages!

image.png

Some bedding plants for the garden? 2.20 HBD

Naw, I don't have a garden anymore, so let's go inside!

image.png

I love to make green smoothies and I will alternate between using mangoes and avocadoes as the fruit.

image.png

Over three HBD for two not so big Avocadoes, I remember living in Spain I would go pick them for free (don't tell my ex neighbour haha!).

image.png

Who loves cheese, meee I do and one thing we have is awesome cheese and this extra mature cheddar is a must in my fridge, I eat cheese in some shape or form every day!

image.png

Tuna is another staple here in my household, and that is a pretty decent price of 3 HBD for four cans.

image.png

Bread is like many cultures rice and another staple that is eaten daily by me. This 1.40 HBD is a good price for 800g

One last pic then go go check out and pay I think!

image.png

6.20 HBD for a bottle of South American red wine.

Come on and get your wallet out, you don't think I am paying do you? Remember us Scots have a reputation to uphold!

image.png

Sweet tooth me had to bypass this aisle, or I would have spent my weekly budget!

Oh wait a moment, I saw a present for @coquicoin

image.png

Look Super Eli a scratcher for your new wee cat Ageese

okay okay we are going ....

image.png

The eagled eyed amongst you will see that some Snickers chocolate bars Snuck into the trolley, yep sweet tooth won yet again, let's hope the might Rangers win in Sevilla on Wednesday. Make us Dream ( a bit like HBD is doing now!).

Now then guessing time, how much did my trolley cost, there was a 500g pack of mince or gound beef in there as well plus a couple of packets of cold ham and chicken for sandwiches, also onions tomatoes and potatoes.

image.png

Total is 31.65 GBP or 38 HBD this does not include coffee or laundry detergent or anything like that, so without batting an eyelid we can spend 100 HBD a week.

Some other household costs (monthly)
Rent 600 GBP 735 HBD
Council Tax 120 GBP 147 HBD
Electric 120 GBP 147 HBD
Gas 80 GBP 100 HBD
Home Internet 20 GBP 25 HBD
Mobile unlimited data Sim 20 GBP 25 HBD

My SIM and home internet are from SMARTY and is a good deal if someone signs up through me both myself and them get a free month, I have done this a few times!

Eating out varies in cost, this burger and a drink cost about 15 GBP or 18HBD and you can pay up to triple that quite easily.

image.png

So there are some costs for living in Scotland and what HBD gets us.

However amazing nature - they (I do wonder who they are) say that the best things in life are free!

image.png

Views like this and the interaction with amazing nature - Free and Priceless, this park is only a five minute walk from my house!

Has the cost of living gone up recently?
Hell yes it has, we were all concerned about Brexit, but that really meant that shops were forced to have more local produce and the QUALITY is awesome now and tastier.

Don't forget to shop local and buy local produce where available people!

The Ukraine war is pushing prices up, energy costs are soaring, food costs are soaring, that 1.15 bread I showed you was 0.90 last year for example.

I budget but life throws curveballs, I think it takes about 2000 HBD to live and not worry about srimping all the time.

Having newly discovered Hive, I am using HBD as a savings plan, whenever I get a chance, I transfer HBD into savings, because at 20% why not!

I have also made my first foray into Leo and PolyCub

image.png

recently I published my first post on LeoFinance
pHBD-USDC my first LeoFinance post - it's a wrap! where I detailed how to wrap HBD and farm pHBD

So that is what HBD gets me in the Kingdom of Fife in Scotland in the UK, and yes I believe that HBD is the hottest stablecoin in the Block at the moment.

Long Live HBD ~ Long Live HIVE

The bottom line is that I am using HBD as a savings tool and an emergency budget lifeline!

I hope that you have enjoyed this #tengocrypto post on HBD and its uses for me and I look forward to reading your comments.

Have a great week everyone.

I'm at the other end of the UK, and it's fascinating to see how different the prices are from one end of the country to the other. I wish I could get unleaded as cheap as you can ! Bought some today, it was £1.68 a litre. Last week, it was £1.65, and a month ago it was £1.55 - that's some serious inflation going on.

ouch £1.68 is getting pricey, it has gone up big time in the two years since I sold my car, I might well start keeping an eye on it now! Good luck getting some cheap down there!

Prices are up in the USA as well. We had official inflation at over 8% last month. Saving in HBD is the best way to keep ahead of rising prices with some margin of safety.

I appreciate you posting prices. Mrs. and I plan on traveling to the UK. We were concerned about prices. But, your post shows that groceries are not at all expensive. Here in South Texas, we can manage on about $2000 monthly. But, it won't be living high.

Good luck.

Ah South Texas cool, I used to work in Houston on and off for quite a few years.
Yes the biggest thing for you guys will be the exchange rate. Also depends where in the UK, London and the South East of course are not cheap.
8% is crazy, I know here it was the highest for many many a year.
Have you sorted where you are going in the UK.
Have a safe trip when you come, covid restrictions are all finished here completely.

I do worry about the exchange rate. Definitely, we won't spend much time in London. Mrs. is more interested in Durham and around Newcastle upon Tyne. We read somewhere that Edinburgh has the most libraries of any city. She might want to go there. For now, it's exploratory. When we retire, it may be longer visits as the visas permit.
As a couple, we would prefer to visit the countryside and villages with stops at historical sites, which I'm sure the UK has in abundance. She loves History. As for me, I'm just a generalist geek.
Hive is our excuse to travel. We intend to post what we see and learn. Perhaps, eventually, it will be our retirement income.

Oh, and we'll likely stop by Cardiff to see the Doctor Who attractions.

Well you will notice a huge difference in prices between London and the North East not to mention the friendliness in the people too!
Edinburgh is where I am from and can be pricey too! Yes history wise, well the UK is full of it, and there are so many awesome villages with amazing scenery that are full of historical sights.
Cardiff is cool, what does she think of the new Doctor Who I wonder, has she even heard of him!

Neither of us have heard of the new actor playing the Doctor.

We see that Russel T. Davies is coming back as show runner. That's a good sign.

Given the selection of the new Doctor and his companion, I worry they might repeat the dumpster fire Chris Chibnall created for Jody Whitacre. She deserved better writing. I think her season 13 was much better.

With Captain Jack Harkness, they've exhausted the novelty of an immortal's mating preferences. Harkness was also the first trans by becoming Face of Boe.

Sweet tooth, like me !LOLZ
😍. I crave for sweet often.

Here, in my country, you can buy 3 dozens of banana for 1 HBD and the burger and fries it would be available for 2 HBD. Well, it also depends on the place from where you buy it. If you are not going to a very expensive restaurant 2HBD is enough.

In my country there are many people who have monthly income of 100 HBD in which they are supposed to manage everything. It is certainly difficult.

I don't think cigarettes are that expensive either. I am not sure though as I haven't ever bought one 😇.

Our weekly shopping bill is around 200 HBD as well, but I think we get more bang for our buck here. Certainly petrol is a little mroe exy, but you guys have paid more for petrol than us for EVER, so I think it's hitting us hard here in Australia.

Last time I was in the UK it was panic buying - no yeast, flour etc - because of the pandemic, but it made me laugh that you could still get beer and wine, no problem.

I was watching Survival Russia on Youtube and he was laughing because it was still possible to get German beer despite boycotts and bans.

As long as you can have a tipple, all is good.

Talking about petrol is funny, for years and years as you point out it has been bloody expensive in the UK, the government taxed the hell out of it. Yet now I see so may other countries starting to catch. I remember years ago when I was working in the States, I was flabbergasted by how cheap it was!

Hehe oh you made me laugh, alcohol, yeah no prohibition here have to have wine and beer, that Survial Russia guy sounds funny, he can get his German beer in this time of sanctions!

Hola, Super Ed! Good morning!☕️
You are not a spring chicken anymore 🤣🤣🤣 Me dio un ataque de risa al leer eso.

That's a nice gift for Ageese and me, and the sofa would appreciate it.

I'm astonished as to how food is way more expensive here. Considering salaries here sucks. But your electric and gas bill are high. We pay the same for the internet, maybe a little more.

We don't pay rent. But renting here may be cheaper, I think.

Anyway, we need to keep grinding out more and more Super Ed. Have a great day and a great week. And good news on Wednesday ⚽️⚽️

Take some !PIZZA 😂

But look what I'm going to eat in a few minutes with the coffee I'm making. And I know you don't like strawberries very much, but this tartlet is too yummy! And with ☕️☕️😋😋

Now I want something sweet!

You sold your car? Do you ever miss it, especially in the winter? I walk many places, but, the weight of c arrying all my groceries home, it might break me. ;)

I do use public transporatation most days.

I saw those snickers! I was going to give you a free pass on those. Your home internet is incredibly cheap, your cell coverage is the same as mine. My electric is cheaper than yours... but, it is interesting to see what everyones cost of living is. My favorite bread actually went down in price, which I don't understand unless they were making such a profit on it, they lowered the price to gain more customers. Why else would they do it?

You sold your car? Do you ever miss it, especially in the winter?

Yes I do. However, overall most definitely not. If we are in need of a car for a couple of days for example we will rent. The upside of no car, means no insurance, no road tax, no annual MOT and servicing, no breakdown insurance, no running costs, that all adds up.

We have a good public transportations system here, and if more people took the decision to use it, then it would get even better.

I worked in the Oil and Gas Industry and now believe I raped the planet enough and now my turn to give back.

I do use public transporatation most days.

That is awesome Denise, it can be hard in the States. With my house in Florida, I know there is no way on earth that I could walk or use the almost non-existant public transport!

Groceries, well now we do almost all our grocery shopping online, they have a great delivery service and it will arrive the next day when I want it. For milk which used to be something I would make a special trip to the grocery store, I get delivered twice a week. It is more expensive but a great idea, just like the old days.

Our energy prices have skyrocketed this year by 56% and are going up the same in October!

I love to see what things costs, and when I am abroad one of the first things that I do is visit a supermarket to get an idea of grocery prices.

I wonder if your bread going down was a loss leader to get people into the store. Talking about bread with this war, there will be massive wheat shortages and bread etc will be going up again, although I am guessing over there you will have enough wheat so not bear the brunt of those costs.

The Snickers ah well, the sweet tooth one;)

Wait. Do you have a house in Florida? Did you live here? Oh, you are such an interesting person. You are right about Florida, although the house that I just sold is on the Space Coast, so it is possible depending on where you live. Which coast is your house on and do you ever go there or just rent out. Incidentally, it is a great time to see, most houses are going for 2 and 3 times the amount of what you paid for it if you bought it two years ago. It's insane! They don't even care what condition it is in! Seriously! They are flipping them like crazy.

You were in the gas and oil industry? Off with your head!

I actually get milk delivered here, along with eggs.

I have never had groceries delivered because there are tons of grocery stores to buy from. Even during the height of covid. There were no people in there, some days, I was the only customer. :) Anywho... You are exactly right! I am sure they were using it as a loss leader. That makes so much sense.

Well, the shortages in Europe will be massive, I am sure. I'll send you some. :)

For a bite of the snickers.

You really took us on a tour with in this post. Glad to see how much you guys really spend over there.

The minimum wage over here is around 58HBD per month. Some people earning this figure have a family of 3 kids and a wife to take care of. Haha. You can now imagine how much they can afford to spend weekly.

The imbalance in exchange rate for these currencies really makes it hard for someone from my part of the world to understand why someone from your end would spend 18HBD on a burger and drink. Haha. Please bear with us, my country's currency is already in all sorts of mess.

HBD is really standing tall in the Crypto space especially at a time like this with everything we are seeing in this bearish period.

I'm glad I read this. I will know what to face if I ever get an opportunity to visit Scotland. Hehe.

Thanks for sharing this on DreemPort.

An interesting post Ed! Yeah, I have just been watching fuel prices go UP UP UP and electricity go UP UP UP. 😲

I am very fortunate that I don't have to go to the office much anymore as that is a 40-mile roundtrip!!! But I do have to drive every day as my kid's school is a village school a good few miles away from the house so too far to walk and cycling is out of the question too as it's not very safe on the roads. Hubby has to go to the office most days of the week too and his is an 80 mile roundtrip... we both got suckered by the government into buying diesel cars a few years back when they convinced everyone that diesel was running cleaner than petrol ...ugh... oh well, next cars will be electric, that's for sure! I guess we don't get much of an option anyway given that the government is banning the sale of new petrol/diesel in the next few years.

We stopped our Ethereum mining yesterday... it's just not worth it anymore, with high electricity prices and low crypto values, especially as it will be moving to POS soon anyway.

HBD is certainly holding strong as a stablecoin; couldn't agree more! I started moving some HBD into savings when the 20% APR was introduced but then HIVE value crashed so now I am moving newly earned HBD into HIVE... mix 'n match !LOLZ. I see you have an article on pHBD ... I have it open to read !LOLZ

I came across your post in Dreemport this evening 😍 !PIZZA !ALIVE
