A New Orleans Silver Beauty!

As most of you know I'm a little fond of the Morgan silver dollars. Granted they aren't quite as pretty as the Peace dollar, but they are still among my favorites. Over the last decades the US Mint has mainly had coin producing mints in San Francisco, Philadelphia, Denver, and West Point for collectibles. What many people forget is the US Mint also had coin producing facilities around the nation in earlier times including Cason City, NV and in this case New Orleans, LA.

From 1838-1861 and 1879-1909 the New Orleans mint was in operation. It was chosen because of it's location on the the Mississippi river and was established in the French Quarter for those familiar with New Orleans. The building suffered many problems over the years as it's original design hadn't taken into account the soil and high water table in the area and had to be reinforced and repaired over the years. The mint ceased production when Louisiana seceded from the Union in 1861. The confederate states briefly used it to mint their coinage as well. After the war in 1879 it was reopened for further production until decommissioned in 1909.

This Morgan was minted in New Orleans in 1879 after the Civil War and bears the distinctive O mint mark on the reverse. The photos have been stored on m laptop for some time now.

I haven't produced content on YouTube in years, I was referring to videos I used in my previous post without issue. Leo Alpha just seems so unreliable in pictures pulling up that I think I'm moving to a different posting solution. If no one can see the picture they don't open or pay attention to the post.
