Another Morgan Silver Beauty, This One From 1889!

avatar

I was lucky enough to pick up a few more Morgan silver dollars for my collection recently. They came from a private buyer who was clearing out some of the duplicates in his collection. A couple days ago I posted the first from this bunch all dated in the 1880's and all from the Philadelphia mint. Not my favorite mint but they are great coins!

This beauty is an 1889 Morgan silver dollar. It's not quite as nice as the last one because the surfaces have a little bit more damage from the original bags they were placed in at the mint. This coin likely sat in a bank vault for decades and was never in circulation like most high grade silver dollars. Most people at the time felt they were too big and heavy to be carried around, and so today we can thank them for leaving us with these beautiful pieces of history in pristine condition.

Just like all Morgan silver dollars minted in the 1800's or 1900's it's 90% silver and 10% copper. They are truly works of art and it's a shame our coins in circulation today just don't meet the old standard of coins in my humble opinion.

Morgan silver dollars are great coins to collect and are very affordable in lower grades, and sometimes you can find a great deal on a mint state one like this. Sadly silver premiums are pretty high at the moment and many places have minimum order amounts so it takes some serious looking and a lot of luck to find good deals these days!

About this particular coin:
Design: George T. Morgan
Year: 1889
Mint: Philadelphia
Diameter: 38.1 mm
Weight: 26.73 grams
Composition: 90% silver and 10% copper
Edge: Reeded
Population: 21,726,811

And my disclaimer: Gold and silver stacking can be a fun hobby but isn't for everyone. You can lose money. I'm not a financial advisor and this isn't financial advice, please always do your own research before spending your hard earned money.

Love them, I wish I could get a few more but they where largely absent in my last local coin show. I have to be content with what I already have.🙂

They can be tough to find if no one is selling locally. Recession and inflation fears certainly aren't helping either. Some of my best buys on these has come down to plain luck. The guy I bought from I ran into at a coin store and he happened to be looking to sell!

This one saw more then bank bags. The ear on Lady Morgan are flattened out, that can’t happen in a bag. Also there’s no detail left on the tail feathers of the eagles breast. This saw some action but is still a nice coin.

You are right, I didn't look at this one quite as closely. It came with the others bundled, the 1880 must have been distracting me. The wear near the ear and hair is notable probably an AU 50-55.. Still a pretty coin!

I’m a numismatic guy. I collected way before I stacked, and Morgan’s are one of my best knowledgeable coins.

You must have quite a collection! I've always liked DMPL and usually try to pick up mainly those. But lately I pick up most anything if it's a decent deal. Finding DMPL at a good price anymore is near impossible though!

I think we have discussed this a couple times about the design of older coins and today's coins. I agree.

This reminds me I need to get down to the local indoor flea market and see if they still have some Morgans floating around. Last i was there they did, I might be able to snag a few if I can get my butt there sometime soon and at a decent price.

I like flea markets, you can find some cool stuff there! I don't think I've found Morgans there but I have found deals of Peace dollars. I hope you have some great luck!

You're going to be shocked that you were able to get them for such a small price... Our New Product Line of Silver and Gold Coins will Circulate... But our Physical and Electronic Currencies will Circulate more... Our Silver and Gold Coins will have way too much Spending Power to be used for Day to Day Spending...
