Beautiful Vienna Silver Philharmonic

It's always fun to pick up some European silver. Although I must confess I haven't been picking up as much as I used to. You can find all sorts of great silver and gold coins, @trumpman has been picking up a nice horde of sexy silver German eagles lately. If you haven't seen them definitely check them out! At one point I was collecting the Vienna Philharmonics rather aggressively but haven't for a couple of years now. Definitely time for me to get back in the habit!

Vienna Philharmonics were produced in gold starting in 1989 designed by Thomas Pesendorfer. The obverse displays the pipe organ from Golden Hall in the Musikverein where the Vienna Philharmonic plays their orchestras. It also displays the denomination, metal and content, and the year minted. It also has Republic of Austria in German on the top. The reverse design shows various instruments with Wiener Philharmoniker (Vienna Philharmonic.) The design was kept the same over the years, and in 2008 a silver version was minted and subsequently produced yearly. A platinum version was produced as well starting in 2016. There are fractionals of the gold and platinum varieties.

Here is a 2011 one ounce silver Philharmonic, a very pretty coin from my hard drive files:

s-l1600 (15)a.jpg

About the coin:

Denomination: 1.5 Euros
Metal: Silver 99.9%
Diameter: 37 mm
Thickness: 3.2 mm
Weight: one troy ounce
Edge: smooth (in gold and platinum it's reeded)

One extremely interesting variant produced was made in 2004 for the fifteenth anniversary, called the big Phil. It contained 1000 troy ounces of gold and 37 cm across! Only fifteen were produced and you can bet they aren't in my budget. Now that would be a hard one to store! Here's a picture of it:

I've bought a lot less of these the last few years, just other stuff that I like more. They're pretty coins though, never did buy a gold on though.

After the ASE, Brittania, Krugerrand, and Maples, I get the Philharmonic silver coins! They are relatively new, but they are my go-to.

I've been buying them less because I do like other stuff more... But if I could afford one of those 1000 ounce big Phil that would be a fun buy!

Those look pretty nice, I don't have any/many. I would have to dig through and see if I got one or two ransoms. I like them, but they always seemed to carry a hefty premium when I was buying.

I would get tired carrying around a 1000 troy oz coin! !LUV

You would need your own very hefty safe just to store that in!
