Cayman Islands Silver Emperor Fish Coin / Re-blog lottery!

Today I thought I might head back to the Caribbean, at least mentally. I think I'm going to need a Pina Colada! I want share something from the beautiful Cayman Islands. When I was living in the Caribbean this one was of the few places I never had a chance to visit. Mainly because it was outlandishly expensive to even find a place to stay and this was some twenty years ago. I can only imagine it's much worse today, but it's still on my bucket list!

This coin I picked up in coin shop years ago, I believe in a coin shop in Long Beach, California. The main reason I bought this was for the colors in the oxidation. There was this great blue hue with fish swimming in it like the ocean. Have a look:

About the coin:
Country: Cayman Islands
Denomination: 50 cents
Mint : Franklin Mint, Wawa, Pennsylvania, US
Year: 1979
Finish: Proof
Mintage: 4,247
Composition: 92.5% silver
Diameter: 28.2 mm
Weight: 10.3 grams
Edge: Reeded
Obverse: Queen Elizabeth II
Reverse: Caribbean Emperor Fish

I really like the look of this coin because it has a great design and the oxidation was perfect. Granted I usually like my coins free of oxidation, but every now and again nature gets it right. Oxidation can occur on silver coins if they're kept in humid environments, which is why it's best to keep your coins and silver bullion in sealed cases with low humidity. Many silver coins or bullion that oxidize can turn black, they don't always turn out nice like this one did.

This coin is great for collectors and silver stackers because you can usually find a reasonable price if you shop around. They are sterling silver though at 92.5% silver and it can tend to tarnish more easily than pure silver. I personally love coins with animals on them so this was right up my alley, and being from the Caribbean was even better!

No animal coin post would be complete without talking a little about the star of the show. Today that is the Caribbean Emperor Fish. This is a type of angel fish that live pretty much everywhere in tropical waters around the globe. They are incredibly beautiful fish, and you can often see them while snorkeling or diving on coral reefs. If you aren't certified to dive you can still snorkel above reefs and see all sorts of beautiful fish!

fishlaboratory.com

They can grow up to 16 inches in length (40 cm) and live in fairly shallow water as a general rule. The angel fish species are all very popular as aquarium fish, as they are all very colorful and can live up to twenty years. I've always wanted a salt water aquarium, but never had the time to dedicate to it. Another item for the bucket list!

This is going to bring this entry for today to an end. I hope you enjoyed my post today and if you have any questions, comments, or questions please feel free to leave them below.

And since this is being posted in #freecompliments I wanted to remind everyone to take time to be kind today. A little kindness can change someone's life! A little kindness can go a long way towards improving someone' day.

Haha, indeed! And I have to say that I have not been adding invoices on the spot this quarter due to the level of stress the whole moving situation has cost. But it also feels good to catch up knowing I now have a fresh start so the speak :)

I don't have to do maths for it though :) our accountant does that part. I'm glad he does because honestly, digging into a foreign tax system is not that easy. I will do it myself in some years when I have seen how they do things and when I speak the language fluently, but for now, let them figure it out :)

I was mostly checking the inboxes for invoices that I didn't print or archived right away and printing them etc. Didn't even finish but now I'm going to write a post and finish it in the morning :)

Today was ok, we had a good day to be honest, what about you?

Cayman is only land/beach for thee rich such that the original inhabitants can't afford to live there any more.

All the best property is owned by the rich and the more inland areas are where locals have to live. Even though they do have one of the highest median pay in most of the world, it's only enough to really survive since everything is so expensive. Island living is never cheap (I know from experience), but add in huge amounts of cash from the extremely rich and prices skyrocket!

It's salt water! Not a fresh water one. They seem to be expensive too (unless you go catch your own)

And the most accurate. The fish on the coin is probably a French Angelfish, not a Emperor. They make very nice coins up north don't they?

The blue oxidation on this coin is very fitting… So very nice!😊
Save one of those piña coladas for me Lol!😇
I imagine vacationing now would be extremely expensive! Probably priced me out of visiting this tropical paradise!🙄

The Caymans are just very expensive... I'm down for a piña coladas, let's have a beach party! That's really why I bought it, the blue with the fish, it fits so well. Many people may not understand, but oxidation can be very pretty. Unfortunately it's all up to mother nature, forced oxidation is unpredictable.

Fortunately many other islands are much more affordable. I recently priced the Ritz Carleton in San Juan, Puerto Rico. Some nights are $200 a night, which is dirt cheap for the Ritz. But other nice hotels were less than a hundred!

You’re so correct about how oxidation can create a beautiful look on a coin!
I have several Morgans that were left in the cellophane paper stapled holders from when I was a kid. They have a beautiful rainbow patina that might not have happened if they were in an airtight!🙄
