Giant Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles kick off this Nineties Friday!

On March 30, 1990 a new movie was released by the name of "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles". Based on the cartoons of the 1980's, this movie turned into one of the biggest hits of the year. I remember it being a good flick, I'll have to find it on streaming here sometime. It grossed over $200 million on a budget of only $13 million, not too bad a return! Movie making has always been a risky business, even more so today... but the didn't do too bad!

In conjunction with the movie, not wanting to lose out on any profits, a line of new TMNT toys were produced known as the Giants. Why Giants? They were 13 inches (33 cm) tall and fully posable. They were an instant hit and kids loved them because of their size, it made them more fun to fight the bad guys. Today you can get a set of the originals in used condition for around $200, however, if you want mint in box they tend to run around $200 each if you can find them. These have become expensive collectibles!

Here's a video I found of an in depth look at the Giants:

Because it's Friday I am going to be doing a Nineties Friday post. It's an event started by @geneeverett , and is a day you can share just about anything from the 1990's. He's also adapted it to be Four Tune Friday as well, so if you prefer that angle you can feel free! There are no prizes, just pure fun!

Now for some music from the 1990's!

Foo Fighters

I know I share these guys a lot, they are one of my favorites from the 1990's. This legendary band from Seattle, Washington formed after the death of Kurt Cobain ended the band Nirvana. Drummer Dave Grohl picked up the pieces and made his own band and if sure worked out well for him! This comes off their album The Colour and the Shape from 1997, and the song is "Everlong" performed live:

Quiet Riot

I bet you didn't see this one coming! Although Quiet Riot is often thought of as a band from the 1980's, they did release some work in the 90's and beyond. In 1997 they did a cover of the AC/DC classic "Highway to Hell", although the first time I heard it was only a few days ago. They did a great a job on this cover, enjoy this one, it's good!

And just an interesting fact, the band continues to tour although it has none of the original band members today.

The Offspring

Another of my favorite bands from the decade, as they were from Garden Grove, California. That's in Orange county not far from where I live! Their breakout album was Smash is 1994 that had multiple hits, one of them being "Self Esteem":

Olga Tanon

I lived most of the 1990's living in Spanish speaking countries, so most of the music I heard was in Spanish. So I often toss in a tune that was popular back in the day. Today I'm going with Puerto Rican singer Olga Tanon. She is known for her merengue and latin pop and has been popular since the early 1990's. Today's song comes from 1996 and is called "Me Subes, Me Bajas, Me Subes":

That will wrap up this #ninetiesfriday ! I hope you enjoyed the post and it had some good memories in there for you all. It sure was fun to put together! Please feel free to leave any comments or questions below, and thank you for all of your support. It really means a lot to me! Have a great weekend everyone!

These older collectibles become expensive as adults want to collect the toys of their youth. That and many were simply thrown out so there aren't all that many surviving compared to how many were produced. Still amazing to think someone would pay $200 for an old toy that is still mint in box, never opened!

I didn’t have the Giant ones but Man I had all these toys! I remember having a ninja Rabbit that I never saw in an episode of the cartoon but I loved it! He came with a sword! Casey Jones I pretended was Jason on Halloween 😂 I remember going to comic shop one time away and picking out 8 so my parents could tell “Santa” which ones I wanted.
Plus classic tunes! 🎸 this post is Nineties AF! Let’s Go!

Thanks bro! I don't think I ever saw the giant ones to be honest as it wasn't all that long after that I started my journeys in South American. That is pretty cool that your parents took you to the comic book store to choose out what you liked. My parents never took me to one, and to be honest I'm not sure there were any close by. It was a more rural city back then!

They still are a huge franchise to this very day. I would love to have been the guy who dreamed them up, he must have made a fortune! I bet your kids did love them, they were cool toys!

It makes you wonder what he was thinking when he dreamed up Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles!😇
Some people have an awesome imagination!☺️

You almost have to wonder if it was THC or some psychedelic drug fueled it, but maybe he was just really creative!

I know I have probably said this before, but I will never forget when I was a kid and my friend came to me talking about these new toys he had just learned about. These Turtles that were Ninjas. I thought it was the stupidest thing I had ever heard.

Shows how wrong I was!

I remember my oldest nephew was into them when he was little. I used to watch the cartoons with him. I can even remember some of the intro song that went to it. Funny how stuff like that sticks with you.

The song is firmly planted in my brain as well after watching the cartoons with my son. It's just so catchy that it's hard not to remember! lol

Turtle Power! Yeah, I watched the original cartoon as well when I was younger, but I still felt like it was a bizarre concept.

Funny how such a bizarre idea has become such a huge franchise. I never watched the cartoons back in the early days and the movie was my first real exposure to them. Once I had my son there was another cartoon version which I saw with him over and over, he loved the turtles and collected the action figures associated with the show. Talk about a huge money maker! lol

I used to watch the original cartoon, but I never owned any of the action figures and I never really watched any of the live action movies. I did play the NES game, but never got past the sewer swimming mine level...

Absolutely love this share! The Foo Fighters' origin story is a powerful testament to resilience and creative rebirth. Dave Grohl channeling profound loss into a new, defining musical force remains incredibly inspiring. "Everlong," especially live, is more than a song—it's an anthem of raw emotion and endurance. Their performance here captures the very energy that cemented their legendary status, proving that from the end of Nirvana, a new rock pillar could rise. Thanks for sharing this timeless piece of '90s legacy. It never gets old.

Thank You

Thanks you, I'm glad you enjoyed! Foo Fighters are awesome band, and Dave Grohl is a talented guy. How many artists have been key members of two legendary bands? Not many... Foo Fighters really drove rock into the new millennium. It's a shame to see that it's slowly dying off now, much of the new music has lost the "edge" of rock n' roll. Everything is just too perfect...

It is getting more expensive and costly to collect action figures from iconic characters in the past
