Silver Mexican 25 Pesos Olympics coin/ Re-blog lottery

The modern summer Olympics were started in 1896 in Athens, Greece in the Panathenaic Stadium. A beautiful venue and the competition was very successful and every four years thereafter the games were to be held at selected cities. However the games struggled in Paris in 1900 and St Louis in 1904. In the 1904 the winner of the marathon was disqualified after pictures revealed him riding in a car during the race. That cheater sure didn't prosper!

In 1906 in Athens, Greece they did a bit of a revival event which saved the Olympics. Then the Winter Olympics were added in 1908 in addition to the Summer games.

Now jumping forward to 1968 when Mexico City, México was awarded the games beating out Detroit (Michigan), Lyon (France), and Buenos Aires (Argentina). Yes, they beat Detroit. Most countries in modern times have all produced commemorative coins to celebrate their winning Olympic bid. México was no different and produced this beautiful silver work of art!

Reverse: Aztec ball player below above Olympic rings with lettering: JUEGOS DE LA XIX OLIMPIADA MEXICO 1968 (19th Olympic Games México 1968)

I've always liked the obverse of these coins with the eagle. That was a beautiful engraving they produced. The reverse is nice too, but the eagle is the star of the show in my opinion. Every time I've shared a Mexican coin with an eagle sitting on a prickly pear cactus it just didn't seem very realistic to me. I've had prickly pear cacti in my yard before and they have very sharp and nasty needles. Most prickly pear cactus look like the one below and landing on it would be precarious. So I looked for pictures of eagle on cacti and found a bald eagle nesting on a saguaro cactus. None on prickly pears though. But I guess it can be done, those eagles would have to be very agile not to get impaled on those needles!

Now back to the coin, it's a great collectors piece and at 72% silver not too bad for the silver stackers out there. I picked this coin up at a coin shop in Phoenix years ago and it wasn't to much above silver spot at the time. The premiums may have increased in the last few years though, I haven't priced them in quite awhile, but a very cool coin with an awesome eagle on it!

The US Mint used to make beautiful coins before all the presidents showed up. They should go back to Liberty on the coins, coins like the Peace dollar, the Morgan, Saint-Gaudens, and more beautiful coins.

That would be so nuts if the games were ever held in Michigan. I remember the world cup had some games at the silver dome back when it was still intact. It had to have been in the mid 90s.

Apparently Detroit tried a couple times but never got the nod from the IOC. Is Detroit still in pretty sad shape? I haven't heard much on the news about it anymore. Pretty cool they got some world cup games though back then!

Yeah, it is still a bit of a hot mess. I don't mind going down there to visit every now and then, but I wouldn't want to live there. I have relatives that do though. We all know that the IOC is pretty corrupt, so I doubt Detroit has the money they require bribe-wise.

Salt Lake City proved how corrupt the IOC is. They also didn't figure out how to "hide" the bribes properly.
It's too bad it's gone into such a decline, and without attracting some huge new companies or industries I'm not sure how they will improve.

I know it brings in a lot of money, but I think they should honestly just have it in the same place every four years. The fact that they just throw together all of these facilities that time and again we read are poorly constructed and basically no better than hovels. They could be building something lasting that makes the games special again.

It is weird, 72% is an odd choice but silver had been climbing in value throughout the 60's. Maybe they felt it was getting too expensive and started to cut the purity. The eagle was really cool on this one!

The Aztec were crazy about sports. The 'Ball Game' was an empire wide event involving celebration, grandeur, fame and fortune. Intertwined as a religion as much as ritual and can be arguably touted as the center of Aztec culture. A brutal sport where with no holds barred and the stakes were high. Wars and alliances were on the line as well. To the victors of the ball game were showered with accolades of fame and fortune. To the losers ...not good.

I believe the premiums have slowly inched up for Mexican silver...
I think everyone has the same idea, they have beautiful intricate silver coin designs, and this Olympic coin is no exception!!😀

Those needles are nasty! Premiums have dropped a lot on silver everywhere the last few months so a good time to buy in again! They did a great job on the design, I guess they went all out for the Olympics!

I can imagine, I shall check it in a bit, after I can properly think again, lol. Told myself to get back into the posting routine this week, so far so good. Also started to write for CineTV again this week, let's first make sure that all works out as there's still plenty to do here.
