Silver Morgan dollar from 1887/ Re-blog lottery for a chance to win 3 HSBI!

Lately life has been keeping me rather busy. Things pop up with work and my personal life is still important to me so I haven't been really expanding my collection as much. Mainly because I haven't had much time to look around. That's why I have been sharing some of the older cool items I have picked up over the years. I still have many more nice ones to share, but today for something new! Recently I bumped into a fellow I know who frequents one of the coin shops I visit occasionally. Turns out he had a duplicate Morgan silver dollar he was willing to part with and so I jumped at the chance to take a look at what he had.

For those who don't know me I tend to be a sucker for Morgan silver dollars. I just love them! He has an amazing collection, it was fun to look through a few of the really nice coins he has. The one he was looking to sell was an 1887 Philadelphia mint coin because he had several all in excellent shape. What also appealed to me about about this one is that I like coins minted in the 1880's, back when the west truly was the wild west in North America. He offered me a great price and I handed him the cash. So today I have a new item to share:

photos mine taken on a Samsung S10

About this coin:

Design: George T. Morgan

Year: 1887

Mint: Philadelphia

Diameter: 38.1 mm

Weight: 26.73 grams

Composition: 90% silver/ 10% copper

Edge: Reeded

Population: 20,290,000

Of all the Morgan dollars in existence this is probably the easiest one to find in mint state. In 1887 they produced a record number of Morgan dollars to comply with legislation and demand in the western states. Many of these coins were sewn in 100 coin bags as tossed into bank vaults and never saw any circulation. This one is a pretty good strike so I was happy to pick it up. Many of the dollars produced that year were very inconsistent in their quality since they were shooting for record high production. What I love about Morgan dollars are all the nice details on the coin. While I think the later Peace dollar was prettier, the Morgan's details are just so awesome it's just a joy to admire. They are great for numismatics as well as just silver stacking.

Thanks for stopping by and taking time to read my post. If you have any questions or comments please feel free to leave them below.

And my disclaimer: Gold and silver stacking can be a fun hobby but isn't for everyone. You can lose money. I'm not a financial advisor and this isn't financial advice, please always do your own research before spending your hard earned money.

One of my favorite to stack. The mor(gan)e the merrier. I pick em up every chance I get if I happen upon them while out in the world.

It's nice to have someone private willing to sell at times. He will sell his duplicates when he's looking to pick up something nice in my experience. He has one hell of a Morgan collection!

Thanks! It's a pretty one, photos came out decent except a tiny blur on the obverse. When using a cell phone sometimes they don't come out quite right.
