Silver Striker Token from the Maxim Hotel, Las Vegas / Re-blog lottery

The weekend is finally upon us which is always nice. I really didn't have any particular plan for a post today until I came across a Silver Striker token I picked up years and years ago. This one in particular came from Las Vegas from a casino that no longer exists, which are my favorite ones to collect. For those of you who haven't seen one of my posts about Silver Striker tokens before they are tokens that could be won by playing slot machines that would occasionally pay out in the form of a commemorative token, some brass and some silver. Very few of these machines remain in operation if any these days. Here is a cool token from the Maxim Hotel and Casino:

What is great about the token is that is is pure silver inside of a brass ring, about a total of 0.65 Troy ounces. That's why I love picking them up at a good price, although I have noticed the premiums have been going up. The best place to pick them up is eBay anymore, but they great collectibles. It's a great way to pick up some silver at a great price and have a piece of casino history!

What's special about the Maxim Hotel you may ask? It was a smaller hotel that catered to personal service more than most other hotels at the time. It opened July 1, 1977 and was a very lucrative operation throughout the 1980's. Many wealthy people were attracted by the personal service and top quality spas. However in Vegas those good times never last forever as more competition pops up. In the 1990's they ran into financial troubles and switched ownership several times. After entering foreclosure in was closed down in 2001. It was re-named the Westin Hotel but continues to struggle financially although it still open.

One of the most notable events that happened at the Maxim was the shooting of Tupac Shakur in front of the casino as he rode as a passenger in a BMW in 1996. A Cadillac drove up next to the BMW and opened fire. He died a week later from his injuries. Kind of sad that that is one of the most remarkable events that took place at a location...

I imagine that the hotel will soon suffer that fate of most financially unstable locations in Vegas, destruction by implosion followed by a new grander resort and casino.
