[Movie] The Housemaid, A Suspenseful and Erotic Thriller

Ever since the movie The Housemaid came out streaming on Starz last year, I have been wanting to see it. However, I don't subscribe to Starz and I'm not willing to pay for another subscription streaming service. They are getting much too expensive. Fortunately, it's now available on HBO MAX to which I do subscribe and I jumped at the chance to finally see the film. Why The Housemaid you might ask? It's not because I'm a huge fan of Sydney Sweeney, don't get me wrong, I think she's a good actress. I simply haven't watched many of her shows, I once tried to watch Euphoria but found it uncomfortable to even watch. However, this movie has good reviews and everyone I know who had watched it reported enjoying the film. So it's been on my list to view for some time now.
The film begins with Millie Calloway (Sydney Sweeney) as a recent prison parolee looking for a job as it is part of the terms of her parole. Sadly, as a parolee she isn't having much luck. She finds an opportunity to apply as a live in housemaid for a family in a Long Island mansion. Nina (Amanda Seyfried) is married to her wealthy husband Andrew (Brandon Sklenar), and is hiring a live in maid because she claims to be pregnant. The interview goes well, however Millie doubts she'll get the job because any background check would reveal her parole status. To her surprise, she is offered the position.

The interview
Soon after starting she begins to notice very odd behavior from Nina, who becomes very antagonistic with Millie. She constantly threatens to fire her over the innocent interactions with her husband. Her husband calms her and to make it up to Millie asks her to book a Broadway show and expensive hotel stay for the couple giving the Millie the weekend off. She does as she is asked only to have Nina accuse her of doing it without her permission as it would interfere with her daughter's ballet camp. She expects Millie to pay back the cost of the entire weekend. Once again, Andrew steps in and calms his wife.

However, he finds the tickets are non refundable and since his wife is away offers to take Millie to the play and stay in separate hotel rooms. She accepts and the two begin to have a strong attraction leading to an affair over the weekend. When they return Nina again tries to fire Millie, but is surprised that her husband throws her out of the house. Only now do we discover Nina's true plan, to be kicked out and free of Andrew. It turns out she isn't the crazy one, Andrew is... And she planned on Millie taking her place as his obsession.

The affair begins
From here it gets very dark, Andrew locks Millie in the attic forcing her to harm herself to get out. Then we see he did the very same thing to Nina for years, and finally understand why she lost her mind. She was even placed in a mental hospital and forced on antipsychotics. But Millie isn't the same as weak Nina, and fights back. Feeling guilty Nina returns to save Millie as well, then the true fun begins. This story is full of twists and turn you don't really see coming, and the ending is great!

I loved the film, and it's well worth the time spent watching it. I won't give out any more spoilers as it could ruin your fun. It keeps your interest from the start, and turns out the be much darker than you could ever imagine! Enjoy!

That wraps up my review for the The Housemaid. In my book it's a must see, but keep in mind it's for adults only. Definitely not a kid friendly film! Enjoy your week and I hope you get a chance to check out the flick!

Your breakdown of the twist is fascinating. I honestly felt the same way about Euphoria and usually skip shows that get too uncomfortable to watch, but this plot sounds like it makes for a much better thriller.
Thanks, it's a great show. Euphoria made me just feel kind of creepy, not a show for me. Teenagers doing drugs non stop and overly sexual behavior...

Hi, I haven’t seen it, but my mom says it’s really good—which actually makes me not want to watch it, since my mom tends to like really bad movies! Haha. But it sounds like you loved it, so I’ll give it some thought.

I liked it, suspenseful, a bit of a mystery, and a serious twist and power exchange at the end. I'm not sure what kind of movies you like, but I enjoyed this one. They are making a part two for next year!
a mi me encanto cuando la mire, tiene lo suyo
Gracias, fue buena!

Sounds like a nail biting, edge of your seat, type of movie.... definitely worth watching!😀
Unfortunately, we do not have HBO or STARZ...... I guess we'll have to wait for it to cross over to Amazon!😇
They are all getting expensive, HBO Max does have a lot of good programming for the price so I do subscribe. Disney + does as well. But for the price Starz and Apple I just can't do. It's all too expensive! lol
Definitely my friend, and since we have Amazon.... It's basically sort of free Lol!😇

STOPFinished all the books, think there were 4, good story and good ending tho I'm quite skeptical about the changes in the movie adaptation. I hate it when Movie directors change the story from the book. but well, that's how they make money.
I haven't read the books, were they good reads? I know they are making a sequel to the movie as the first one was so successful! They always change the movie from the books because directors and producers want what they think is important. Welcome to filmmaking 101...

Yeah, I finished all of them. Good reads, Ryan.
Yes, they have to make money but he say is a film for adults, and that is a good pointfor the movie
But we are all adults here, aren't we buddy? Ah.. you mean adult movies.
I didn't quite get your question. What did you mean? 🤔🤔
You mentioned in your comment that you hate when directors change the stories in movies compared to the books, and that's why they need to make money
And well, yeah, they have to make money 🤑🤑. I don't see anything wrong with that because, in my case, I don't want to watch the book; I want to see the creative freedom the director offers, inspired by the book. Did i make my point? 🥹🥹👍🏻
Note: By being for adults, let's say it gives it the added value of "seriousness"—something that has been watered down because so many films nowadays just try to be walking jokes like Marvel, etc., just to sell tickets 😅😅
I don't like it when I have to explain humor.
Is complicated when we are from different languajes 😅😅👍🏻
Not a problem, you can talk to people using your own language. We can translate.
Interesting. I haven't seen it, but I saw previews when it came out and those two together were definitely enough to make it intriguing.
It was worth watching, I can't say that about many things I have seen over the years! lol
Damn. That sounds like a great movie. I might have to look and see if it's available on one of the services Beth subscribes to
It's a good one, It's on Starz and HBO Max that I know of right now

This film fascinated me; it definitely played with our emotions. I liked the crucial role of the woman.

A really, really good movie—it really kept me entertained the whole time I was watching it... Thanks for sharing your post... Hugs
I saw it and really liked it, but I know people who also saw it and said that for a husband like Andrew, they'd go to the salon every day (and literally do whatever he asks), and I was like, WTF jajaj
Quite a thought-provoking movie with different twists, I'll look it up.
I love this is for Adults only, Sydney Sweeney i love that women and the way she think
Familiar movies with Babys everywhere make the storys too boring and only for childs
This house maid is in my list and inhope to see it soon 😃😃👍🏻
By the way, excelent score, i think it will be achieve my expectations 😌😌👍🏻
