Twelve Day of Christmas Wish List Day 12, More Pirate Treasure! / Re-blog Lottery

My wish list is coming to an end here at day twelve. I had many choices that I would have love to have included in the list on the last day, but rather than go out with a whimper (cheap) I'll go out with a bang with something really cool! I have always loved prospecting and searching for sunken treasures. Prospecting I have had a fair amount of luck over the years, but on my treasure hunting trips I have always come back with empty pockets despite having combed the beaches of Florida's treasure coast and diving all over the Caribbean. It appears that my best chance to get a piece of a historic shipwreck/ pirate treasure may have to be buying one!

There are many shipwrecks from which I would love to have some treasure. There's the lost 1715 Spanish fleet, some of which has been recovered and some still turns up on the beaches of Florida or in the nearby mangrove swamps. The Maravilla wreck in the Bahamas and the San Jose off the shore of Colombia. And of course last but not least, the Atocha.

This is one of Mel Fisher's finds among the remains of part of the sunken once grand Spanish galleon. It sat buried under the sands of the Florida Keys for at least 350 years before it was recovered. Often called a silver piece of eight, it's a silver 8 Reales coin:

These silver pieces of eight coins are what all the pirates in the Caribbean wanted. This literally could have belonged to a pirate before it's eventual sinking along with the Atocha. Just imagine the people who could have carried this coin in their hands four hundred years ago! If only coins could talk!

Life in the Caribbean wasn't as wonderful as movies may romanticize it to have been. It would have been very hot and humid. Most people wouldn't smell very good and there weren't sewer systems in most places in the early days. Life in the Caribbean today is much nicer with air conditioning, running water, and all the modern amenities! The joys of modern life...

You can still invest in their recovery, they're still missing the captain's quarters which would have had the richest part of the treasure. If you do you can dive the site and what you find you keep. I looked into it about ten years ago and it was about $10,000 to invest back then. No idea now but I'm sure it's a lot higher!

Oh, how I wish I was this organised! Always planning to write some drafts for the busy days, but it never materialised 🤷🏻‍♀️

Nothing big. My journey to get here was big enough - 1200 miles drive. Now I’ll just chill with my parents and hopefully catch up on writing ✍️

I quite enjoy driving, but this one was more tiresome than usual. Hopefully drive back will go easier, as I’m leaving in the morning, rather than middle of the night 😆

I’ve had a few shipwreck coins over the years. While nice to have, I’m too much of a coin snob. To me if a coin isn’t detailed enough to show all of its beauty I don’t want it.

For the newer coins definitely, but shipwreck stuff I'll take what I can find. I'm going to try to head down to the Caribbean in Feb for a nice dive trip!

You're correct as the pirates of the golden age would be very happy running their fingers/hooks through piles of these 8 Reale Cobs that preceded the Mexican Pillar 'dollar' that didn't come out until after 1730. Any Atocha shipwreck coin is on my wish list too. RB!

Nice! Christmas in Florida. I'm not a huge Christmas fan as an adult, an expensive holiday. It was fun when I had a younger child around. He's an adult so it's another expensive holiday...
