Encountering Pride - A Look Back at the Past

encountering pride main image.png

Being proud after achieving is something we all have experienced. We may not openly express our happiness as some people do but we feel this happiness on the inside. I’ve seen people are so happy to the extent that they even celebrate, regardless of the size of their achievement.

It is common to see people celebrating the results of things that they’ve been working on or anticipating for a very long time. This includes graduation, birthdays, marriage, and after being accepted to their dream job to name a few.

In addition, some feel proud and celebrate everyday after completing their tasks. In my observation, this level of being proud is common to laborers after completing a physically demanding job.

Pride Boosts Enthusiasm and productivity

Whatever the reason for someone’s pride and no matter how deep or superficial the reason is, I observed that it increases our enthusiasm and productivity. I encountered and experience this while I was still in college and in one of my previous lines of work.

Education: Taking Pride in our Course

education.png

Back in college, we’ve been constantly being told by one of our professors that our course is the best among other courses in our department. However, I also discovered that the same thing is being said in some courses whether it is in our school or other universities. LOL.

Regardless if what they’re saying is true or not, I understand that they just want us to be proud of our chosen field of study. They understand that by doing so, we will be motivated to do our best in finishing our studies. And it works.

Unfortunately, while this strategy works it also has its negative effect. A few of my classmates became too proud to the point that they belittle other courses. I also met a few who had been under the same conditioning - they took too much pride in who they are that they look down on other people.

Workplace: Being proud of our Work

workplace.png

This is also true when I worked for a Fortune 500 company. The nature of the work is repetitive – almost all of the workers on the production line are doing the same thing over and over again, 24/7. To some extent, there are even those who have developed some sort of psychic abilities. They’ve been in the business for years and they can determine if a device is defective just by touching or smelling it. While almost all of their peers would need to use an ISO standard machine to detect it.

Their work is so repetitive and boring that I usually hear their supervisors building up their pride. They want them to be proud of their work so that they will not lose interest which could decrease productivity.

Unfortunately, their pride is being built by looking down on other workers in and or outside of the company.

There are times when I think about these situations that I can’t help but wonder;

Does being Proud have to be Negative?

In normal situations, being proud is generally good as I have already discussed first. However, there are situations where it is really bad. And I believe that it doesn't have to be like that.

In the case of a workplace, they can make their employees proud of their work by making the workplace as enjoyable as it can be. Sponsored vacations, wage increases, or bonuses can also do the trick.

Thank you for taking the time to read my work.
I appreciate it very much.

Back in the University that I enrolled with 15 years ago. When you enrolled in a business course it shows that you don't have any option. It was the tapunan ng mga di pumasa sa mga higher courses such as Engineering and Accounting then they just need to get their way up and shift once their grades are at par with the said courses. They are belittled but looking at the trend now and the field of work that I am into I do appreciate the folks that have marketing skills as it is one of the sought-after skillsets in the online world.

About the Fortune 500 not really sure if that is something that can be proud of. Never thought of that highly, per writing my company's included in the Fortune 200 but I cannot say that I am proud or something.

I agree with you with this. It took me a very long time to realize and accept that marketing people has the upper advantage. It doesn't matter if we have the best product or skill if we don't know how to market it, it will not sell. Compare this to those average products but with the right marketing skills, they are making a large profit.

I was proud when I was accepted as it was my first job connected to what I've finished. But I cannot also say the same after a month or two. LOL.

The case is different on the production line where the manual work is. I will not say all, but I noticed that many of them are proud of where they work. As I can freely roam in different areas, I can hear how their supervisors condition their mind. I also heard them talk about it during breaks.

As for me, I did not last long because of the toxic work environment. 😅

Nice piece of work, and a good effort put together it was worth going through, but what do we do when Proudness becomes a thing of negative pride?

I usually give them hints (usually in a form of a joke) sometimes, but I never directly confronted them. As I am sure they will retaliate if I would directly point out the negativity of their pride.

The part of looking down on others is really bad... And yes, organisations should celebrate their employees for working hard.

You pointed out the fact that school colleges and universities somehow influence the students to have proud in themselves. It's right in some way. But when they have to enter into practical life they have to get rid of this negative attitude. They have to work in a team environment where such traits are considered not to be professional. But if pride is taken in the right way it's a much more motivating and success-building motive. #dreemport dropped me here.

I am not sure if this method of increasing student motivation is also being practiced on other countries. From my experience, most of those who had been effectively influenced by this method will take time to realize it.

Indeed this realisation time is lengthy 🤭 in my case when I faced the general public 😂 all my pride faded. No matter how brilliant you are in your Academy in practical life you are ordinary 💔🤣 kidding

I can relate. LOL. The public is my nemesis.
Reminds me of a fight back in the day where I almost got knocked down before I could even climb up the ring. 😅 The attention of the crowd made me tremble and very nervous. 🤣

Hahaha 😂 🙌 the day when we first appear in a job interview. I gave a demo as a lecturer and found the people sitting in front of me are not my class fellows, 👀 they were so serious and I wanted to cry while watching their empty faces 🤣 might be their roof of head were also empty 😁
