My dCity experience

avatar

I started playing @gerber's dCity game early on, I was still kind of late to the game as I didn't play for a couple of weeks after the announcement.

I recently sold my city through a private sale.

Did I make a profit?

Let's look and find out.

I made my first purchase of cards back in February. I spent 720 Steem over three days. While that's a lot, I was relatively low spend as I was only rank ~30. I quickly dropped to ~60 as I wasn't buying more cards with Steem outside of taking my SIM rewards and buying cards with them.

A few weeks ago I spent a bit more buying cards with Hive and spent a total of 1,496 Hive. My total investment is around
2,240 Hive.

dCity gave out weekly rewards then changed to daily, during this time I made about 623 Hive from February until today. I also earned around 235,000 SIM which is around 1,000 Hive at today's SIM price, but for most of the time it was even with buying cards with Hive so more like 1,175 Hive.

I put 99% of my daily SIM rewards back into my city by buying cards, a few weeks ago I sold my SIM for a few days on the market for a total of around 17,500 SIM which is only around 87 Hive. I spent about 50 Hive worth of SIM to unlock all technologies.

Using @rafalski very cool website, you can visualize my city's economy over the last month or so.

As you can see from the chart, I spent most of the SIM I earned on a daily basis.

The market value of my city was a slow climb between large purchases as I would get a handful of cards daily (1-4 daily depending on how far along I was). You can see the steep drop off when I sold my city.

At one point I purchased a few key cheap technologies that gave me a decent boost.

I made sure to keep my city balanced by avoiding any penalties for unemployment. Once I got my first social aid office, this was easy as it covered the 1-200 unemployed citizens fairly easily thus eliminating the penalty on income. I got 3-4 social aid offices over the life of my city and sold them.

I sold 620 Hive worth of cards on the local market over the course of my city. I spent about 38 Hive on those key cheap technologies I mentioned earlier above.

How much did I sell my city for?

I sold the city today, a day after my announcement I was selling for 3,000 Hive.

So how did I do?

Expenses:

2,240 Hive - Steem & Hive Card Purchases
37 Hive - Market Purchases
50 Hive - Technology Unlocks

Sales:

3,000 Hive - City Sale
620 Hive - Market Sales
623 Hive - Daily Rewards
87 Hive - Direct SIM Sales

Net: +2,003 Hive

Not too shabby. I came out much better shape than Drug Wars. I think in the end, I lost around 800 Steem on Drug Wars when I finally gave up.

Obviously not financial advice, this is just a recount of my gaming experience and I got into the game almost 6 months ago.

I recently gave it a limited try, to see what it was all about. Without much of a game to play and no significant return on investment (unless heavily invested initially) I didn't see too much point to invest more.

I think it's a great structure or backend for a game, there's a lot of potential in it. Even something relatively simple like being able to arrange your cards graphically on a plot of land, Sim City style, would do a lot towards making it a more compelling game. But I didn't find enough of a game to play to make investing more time or funds worth it for me.

Congrats on your profitable sale!

But you have done the game well even though in the end you have to give up. Thank you for the information on the game you are doing.

I went into it slightly later, spent probably about 100 Hive in total, then sold shortly afterwards for probably a similar rate of return to you.

I had to get out of the game I found it quite anxiety inducing with my daily return being linked to my ranking - too much pressure to log on every day and just buy more cards.

I mean, I know that's how it works on Hive anyway - the more you invest, the more of the share you get back, but having it 'in your face' like that in the form of a game was just too much!

Also, it's not really my kind of game anyway.

I'm wondering if we'll ever evolve beyond card games on Hive, they're all just card games at the end of the day.

Lets see if its actually a profit!
You started playing from February so till today its 7 month! You invested 2240hive which is 560$ with current value! I dont know how much it was back then!
So after playing 7 month with plenty of investment and time you got a whoping profit of around 500$.
But is this enough for 7month time spent?
I actually dont think so!
How ever ultimately its a game! If you had fun playing it then i guess its worth it or something!
But atleast you are not BROKE! ;)

The good thing about DCity is that it's passive. I mean, you don't have to do anything. You just have to be strategic on what building's you'll buy/sell. As what the rich men says, passive income is key to riches. =)

That's true.
However passive income is not an option in crypto! You never know how and when its gonna turn against you!
Some selfish pricks are manipulating market! So if today your earning/portfolio weights 1000$ then it might even turn into 100$ tomorrow!
Talking from experience!
However like i said, its a game! If you enjoy it then its worth it!

I would recommend https://www.holybread.io/ since it has a freemium economic model you don't have to invest anything into it to play, unlike most blockchain games which require an initial investment

Hi @ themarkymark! DCity is making some noise and actually, I'm also kind a late as well but I think it's still worth a try to start my own city. Having 2K Hive profit is indeed quite a good amount! Congratulations buddy!

Good job man! I have farmed a lot from this game and its still great at this point. I figure it takes about 90 days to break even on your investment as a general rule. This is the absolute best passive income i have ever seen on the hive or steem blockchain since i been here. yea i invested a lot but it was totally worth it because it's now paid for (all of my investment and then some is out) and generating me about 8k hive per month.

I didn’t go deep enough early enough for those returns. I dragged my feet a lot and never really went heavy.

Humm...I don't exactly understand what you mean buy "early enough". The cards are still the same price, as a matter of fact the market is cheaper than ever for most cards right now. A person can buy their way into the top 10 right now just like i did. Then it takes about 90 days to beak even with SIM production if you sell it everyday so i don't see any advantage of being early investor other than the fact I have had about 30 -50 days longer to find different techs that a new comer is just now finding. In my opinion this is what makes this dapp awesome. There is an advantage to going big but there is also great risk and that's how it should be.

The earlier you get in the more daily SIM and Technology drops you get as well as daily rewards, if you dropped a lot on day one, it would allow you to snowball a lot. I didn't, and is why I didn't whale up.

How did you sell the whole city?

It is an honor system, but the dCity discord has a bot that will send all cards to another account at once, although it seems to cap at around 800 cards so I had to do two transactions. You can always use a trust worthy third party if you are not comfortable.

I see, and you negotiate the price in advance of the deal then. Clever.
Thanks!

I wasn't too picky, just wanted to move on. But I am happy with it, was quicker and more than I expected.
