Finally saw the little buzzmaker up close. 🪲

I found a cicada right outside my door the morning after a heavy rainstorm. It looked incredible up close, with a bright green and black camo pattern, big dark eyes, and long, see-through wings. Since it was sitting so still on the wet ground, the rain and wind probably knocked it out of the trees, leaving its wings too damp or damaged to fly back up.

भारी बारिश के बाद अगली सुबह मुझे अपने दरवाज़े के ठीक बाहर एक सिकाडा मिला। पास से देखने पर वह बेहद खूबसूरत लग रहा था—उसके शरीर पर चमकीले हरे और काले रंग का कैमोफ्लाज पैटर्न, बड़ी-बड़ी गहरी आँखें और लंबे, पारदर्शी पंख थे। वह गीली ज़मीन पर बिल्कुल स्थिर बैठा था, इसलिए शायद बारिश और तेज़ हवा उसे पेड़ों से नीचे गिरा लाई थी। उसके पंख भीग गए होंगे या शायद उन्हें कुछ नुकसान पहुँचा होगा, जिसकी वजह से वह वापस उड़कर पेड़ पर नहीं जा पा रहा था।

I actually have heard these insects before but never seen one up close. I read that the male cicadas make a super loud buzzing noise to attract mates. They do this by rapidly vibrating special panels on their bellies.The sound they make is so loud which is why they are also known as nature's summer buzzers.

दरअसल, मैंने इन कीड़ों की आवाज़ पहले भी सुनी है, लेकिन कभी इन्हें इतने करीब से देखा नहीं था। मैंने पढ़ा कि नर सिकाडा मादाओं को आकर्षित करने के लिए बहुत तेज़ भिनभिनाने जैसी आवाज़ निकालते हैं। वे अपने पेट पर मौजूद विशेष पैनलों को बहुत तेज़ी से कंपन करके यह आवाज़ पैदा करते हैं। उनकी आवाज़ इतनी तेज़ होती है कि इन्हें प्रकृति के “समर बज़र्स” के नाम से भी जाना जाता है।

Even though they look big and sound noisy, cicadas are totally harmless and don't bite or sting. In fact, they spend almost their whole lives underground drinking sap from tree roots before coming above ground to grow wings. Getting to see one up close on my porch was a really cool reminder of the noisy little creatures living right above our heads.

भले ही सिकाडा दिखने में बड़े होते हैं और काफी तेज़ आवाज़ करते हैं, लेकिन ये पूरी तरह हानिरहित होते हैं और न तो काटते हैं, न ही डंक मारते हैं। दरअसल, ये अपनी ज़िंदगी का लगभग पूरा समय ज़मीन के अंदर पेड़ों की जड़ों से रस पीते हुए बिताते हैं और फिर पंख विकसित करने के लिए ज़मीन के ऊपर आते हैं। अपने बरामदे में इसे इतने करीब से देखना वाकई एक बहुत अच्छा अनुभव था और इसने मुझे उन शोर मचाने वाले छोटे-छोटे जीवों की याद दिला दी, जो हमारे सिर के ठीक ऊपर की दुनिया में रहते हैं।
