My warm greetings to fellow Freewriters!
This is my entry to the Writing Prompt by @mariannewest for 15 June 2026, Freewriters Community Daily Writing Prompt Day 3135: I can’t drive that!
A week had already passed since he was made redundant.
As time was going fast, he started to doubt whether he would be able to find another job in the next week, not to say in the next month or months.
There weren’t many jobs available in the local area that could match his qualifications and experience, so he soon realized that he would have to lower his expectations, and accept a job just to get paid a salary and make ends meet.
When he finally got a job offer at a local packaging factory, he sighed with relief, because luck had
decided to smile at him after so many fruitless applications and interviews.
He drove to the site of the factory, and asked for Mr. Jameson, the HR manager.
Mr. Jameson informed him that, unfortunately, the post he had applied for had been filled, but they were urgently looking for a forklift truck driver, so he might consider this option and give it a try.
He didn’t tell Mr. Jameson that he didn’t have a license to drive a forklift truck, but he thought it wouldn’t be very different from driving a car, so, why not, he would give a try.
After that, they decided to test his driving skills immediately, and put him on the driver’s seat on a forklift truck.
They told him to take some pallets and move them to another point inside the factory, and put him to some more tests.
When he realized that driving a forklift truck required a certain level of skill and experience that he apparently lacked, he thought that it was about time to stop fooling himself and others and acknowledge his ignorance.
“I’m sorry, but I can’t drive that!” were the only words that he could say.
Thank you!
